Democrats cancel 2nd Obamacare markup meeting
posted at 10:55 am on July 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Make that two in a row that Democrats have ducked, reports Jake Tapper for ABC News. Energy and Commerce had scheduled two meetings for HR3200 this week, the ObamaCare bill that Barack Obama insisted on getting before the August recess. The cancellation, made late last night, shows that the health-care reform project may have run aground:
At 5:54 pm ET the news came: “The Energy and Commerce Markup of H.R. 3200 – America’s Affordable Health Choices Act for 7-22-09 has been CANCELLED.”
Not a good sign for the Democrats trying to report the bill out from committee onto the floor for a vote. Seven conservative blue dog Democrats on the committee have said they can’t vote for the bill in its current form. Some of those Blue Dogs came to the White House today for a 2 1/2 meeting, an hour of which was with President Obama. …
The White House expressed irritation at Republican obstructionism and “playing politics,” but Republicans countered that it’s unfair to blame them — pointing to the substantial majorities Democrats have in the House and Senate.
“If the bill fails,” said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, “it will be because of disagreement among the Democrats.”
It also may be because of Obama himself. He has conducted a highly-public campaign for passage of the bill, but has shown little knowledge of its contents. Combine that with the failure of Obama’s other rush product, Porkulus, and the conditions for considerable skepticism are in place.
Obama seems to forget that Democrats have constituents to whom they must answer, many of them in the next 15 months. Not all Democrats represent coastal liberal states and districts, and they can’t go home and argue for socialized medicine as easily as Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer. They have one eye on Obama’s polling and see how dangerous it will be for them to climb out on that limb while the voters try to saw it off.
The seating of Al Franken gives the Republicans a little ironic cover for this position. With 60 votes, Democrats can pass anything they want in the Senate, and their wide majority in the House makes it even more easy for Obama to control the agenda. Whining about Republican obstructionism now is akin to complaining about taxes on a lottery jackpot; it’s insulting to the intelligence.
Tapper reports that the White House has backed away from the August deadline, but that’s just a nod to reality. If Democrats can’t even hold a committee hearing on the issue, deadlines for full passage are moot.

Obama is in big trouble, but we need to make sure that if he passes this socialist garbage it is in reconciliation and along party lines. It will cause a constitutional crisis, make the nation ungovernable, and result in a major bloodbath for the democrat party in the midterms.
So keep up the pressure on the blue dogs and more importantly the Republicans.

Yeah, go to California and try to sell the people that they will have to pay more taxes for less health care…may not be the best timing, unless they can convince doctors to take IOU’s…
Boxer is going down next election…Pelosi is on borrowed time.
The defeat of Health Care is more more far reaching then Obama…and congress can feel it.

Trying to convince people in a serious recession, with record taxes, that the Republicans are trying to keep costs down at the expense of Obama is going to be interesting.
That is his only avenue, stating the one quote about this being about Obama…well???
right2bright on July 22, 2009 at 11:04 AM
It would be interesting to publicize various interesting sections of the health care bill (the ones no one has yet red), as well as similar, unread (and hidden) ones from C&T.
My guess is that the Democrats will run from both of them like people in an elevator after someone breaks one.
Even better would be to start the 2010 campaign speeches slightly early, and include these issues. Democrats facing reelection (all Representatives) will then have to defend or abandon the bills, and be seen to vote accordingly, at the risk of not being reelected.
Arbalest on July 22, 2009 at 11:04 AM
This meeting getting canceled the same day of Barry’s big prime-time press conference on network TV does not bode well for ObamaCare.
Let’s hope that the Blue Dogs hold and that the Dems end up tearing each other apart deciding whether to tack left or right on the bill. (Progressives are pissed that the proposed bill doesn’t go FAR ENOUGH. Blue Dogs and other Dems concerned with re-election think it goes too far and want to know how to pay for it.)

I’d say neither. They’re both signs of desperation. He and the Dems will have a hard time running against the GOP in 2010 and 2012 considering they control every branch of government.
I realize there is a portion of the electorate that is so dumb or stuck on ideology that they’ll never blame the Dems for anything, but that won’t be enough to save most of these incumbents. Especially the ones in red districts.

Complaining about taxes on lottery jackpots might be insulting to SOMEONE’S intelligence, but I’m not sure why. Beyond the obscene odds against winning, lotteries are nothing but a state-run scam. Even worse, lotteries are the perfect example of false advertising. When you only end up with ONE THIRD of the stated (and advertised) jackpot amount due to taxes and “instant payout”, that’s misleading at best. In any normal business you’d be locked up for this “bait and switch” tactic.
Of course, before the state became the seller of “numbers”, the “numbers” racket was run by the mob. Now it’s run by the legal mob. Illegally, in some ways.

What’s hilarious is watching the Dems run around trying to counter this ‘cratering’ in the polls for Obama and his plans.
Reid saying, yet again, the Repubs are a party of ‘no’ is giggle-inducing. It’s DEMOCRATS also saying NO Harry boy.
Pelosi and Obama saying defiantly “we will pass this” when those odds look slimmer each passing hour. Worth some chuckle-time.
Rahm saying they saved the economy. Just classic comedy.

Too early to say that. Some of the Dem holdouts could simply be looking for a better deal than the $2K bribe they got to pass cap and trade.
Nevertheless, the delicious part about all this is that the filthy liar made this HIS legislation so there is no slithering back into his hole and blaming Congress. Fact of the matter is the filthy liar has been a bad salesman. He had two cabinet-level officials on talk shows Sunday saying directly opposite things about this bill.

Thunderstorm129 on July 22, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Let’s be clear about this. The issue here is not health care – Obama could care less if you die, remembering his pain killer comment and monstrous position on abortion – the issue is destroying the Republic. He hates America and all that it stands for. His entire life has lead up to these six months of faux concern for the economy, the war on terror, cap & trade which serve as cover for implementing the lessons learned from all that surrounded him from his mother to Frank Marshall Davis to Jeremiah Wright to Bill Ayers, ad infinitum (as nauseum, too). His comments on the issues are bold faced lies that are 180 degrees from the truth. If I, a common landscaper, know what is on page 16 of the health care bill how in the hell can BHO say that he does not if his entire presidency rides upon this one issue? He is not telling the truth because the American people will reject outright his proposal if they know what it really is.
What we are witnessing is a bloodless socialist coup.
