Video: Let them eat painkillers

posted at 4:00 pm on July 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This Marie Antoinette moment took place a month ago, and Karl mentioned it in a post at the time, but the video is definitely worth a revisit. Jane Sturm told Barack Obama that her mother had needed a pacemaker implanted at 100 years of age, but got denied by the first doctor she saw. She found a doctor who would do the surgery, impressed by her spirit. When Sturm asked Obama if her mother would have received a pacemaker under ObamaCare … well, watch for yourself:

Jane Sturm told the story of her nearly 100-year-old mother, who was originally denied a pacemaker because of her age. She eventually got one, but only after seeking out another doctor.

“Outside the medical criteria,” Sturm asked, “is there a consideration that can be given for a certain spirit … and quality of life?”

“I don’t think that we can make judgments based on peoples’ spirit,” Obama said. … “Maybe you’re better off not having the surgery, but taking painkillers.

This shows why politicians shouldn’t decide on medical treatments. Dr. Helen Smith, who herself had the same kind of heart problems at a very young age, explains why Obama’s course of treatment would have led to, er, cost savings:

Some heart arrhythmias are deadly, and a doctor telling a patient to take a pain killer to treat V-tach or V-fib should be guilty of malpractice. …

Heart arrhythmias can be absolutely terrifying leading to panic attacks and/or fatigue so crippling that one cannot get off the couch. A pain killer is not going to help. But maybe that’s the idea. Obama is so determined to get his health care plan passed–no matter what the consequences– that he doesn’t care how or if people suffer, especially older people.

Is Obama heartless, mean or just plain ignorant? His response to Jane Sturm leaves me wondering which.

No more heartlesss, mean, or ignorant than the bureaucrats who will eventually make these decisions under ObamaCare, using their pocket Comparative Effectiveness ChartsTM.

Update: The video above was edited for a radio broadcast; the full video is here:

This doesn’t change the criticism above at all. Obama still says that government will tell doctors that Sturm’s mother may not get the pacemaker but be told to take a pill. And although Obama says that “ultimately, that decision will be between doctors and patients” at the end of this video, he’s making it clear that it won’t be at all, but will be decided by a government official who will judge whether or not to pay for a procedure based on its effectiveness. And Sturm’s mother still wouldn’t have been helped by a painkiller.

But seriously…what ethical healthcare system would advocate putting a 100 year old under major surgery. Many people need to wake up and realize we will all die someday. Delaying this inevitability, especially in this grotesque Frankenstein-like example, is very sad…especially for the centurian.

My grandmother is 79. She was born in the depression, looked after an Army captain’s children to make money when my grandfather was fighting in Korea, supported a family of 5 on trucker driver’s (grandfather’s) pay in the 1950′s and 1960′s, did not learn how to drive until she was in her 50s and has survived 20+ years since my grandfather died.

She was recently diagnosed with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer. She has had surgery to remove the majority of the tumors and is on her 2nd(?) round of chemotherapy. She is not suffering any ill effects of the chemo (other than going bald). Right now, she is spending a week with my 8 year old daughter.

It’s good to know that under Dr. Obama’s plan, I’d be picking out a casket instead of sending my daughter to have fun and bake cookies with her great-grandmother.

Quick flashback:
Friday: The Won makes a statement saying “this WILL GET DONE” yada yada
then–White House schedules press conference for Wednesday (tomorrow)
Sunday: Obamabots go on TV continuing their CPR on Obamacare–there is clearly an indication that Obamacare may not make it until Wednesday
Monday: Obama speaks twice about it, attacks Jim Demint
Tuesday: Obama speaks about it again–clearly continuing CPR
It’s so obvious the White HOuse is on defense about this. If he thinks he’s going to restrict our freedom and liberty, we are going to make it HURT ALL THE WAY DOWN.

He’s talking about a fatal dose of morphine, here. Anyone who thinks people who are 100 y/o will get pacemakers, or any kind of real treatment, under Obamacare is just not paying attention. I suspect the cut-off age will be much lower than 100, at which point you will be given painkillers and told to go home and die peacefully, and stop draining resources from people with a better quality of life.

The slow boil method seems to be working for Obama and the Obamatrons…or so they hope.

From tepid water on 20 January, with each new Obama scheme, with each Obama televised speech, Obama is raising the temperature about one-half a degree each time, so that slowly, without realizing it, we will be at a rolling boil in no time at all at this rate…and like the frogs in the l;ab experiment, we’ll be dead (figuratively?).

Obama’s coming up with a new plan, a new scheme, a new crisis, every other day is no accident. Innundate the electorate so much so that they can’t catch their breath.

Every problem needs to be solved now…immediately…can’t wait to delve into facts, there’s no time…

And it seems to be working. Spoke with a family member recently…she said that the problem I raised with an Obama decision was already covered a week earlier, and was “old news” anyway…and, yes, she voted for Obama.

coldwarrior on July 21, 2009 at 5:14 PM

Sorry if someone already posted this, but did anyone else notice how after this woman asks this heartfelt, personal question, Obama directs his answer first to Charlie Gibson, then to the floor, and then he glances her way for a moment, back to Gibson, back to the woman for an instant, and back to Gibson. He simply could not look at that woman for more than 2 seconds. He doesn’t see a human being there at all. He is in perpetual campaign mode, looking for the camera and the teleprompter, and avoiding any real connection with a real American. He has no genuine responses at all. Everything is calculated, which is why his extemporaneous speech always goes awry.

Maybe a little off-topic, but I found this little tidbit over at The Hill about Blue Dog opposition to the ObamaCare bill:

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/blue-dogs-press-obama-on-healthcare-costs-2009-07-21.html

Blue Dog Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee discussed their concerns about the cost of healthcare reform during a White House meeting with President Obama.

Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.), a Blue Dog who has led the charge to reduce the bill’s costs, said after the meeting that “no final decisions have been made.” He said he and others want to wait for the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to score the bill and potential cost-cutting measures.

Ross said the president laid out what he wants to see in healthcare legislation, including that it be deficit-neutral. House members discussed “about 10 issues we’re concerned with,” he said. “Obviously, cost-cutting is first on that list,” Ross said.

Ross said the Democrats met with the president and his staff for about an hour, but the members were at the White House for more than two and a half hours. They left abruptly and returned to Capitol Hill after Ross and Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) made brief statements to reporters. The two did not take questions.

Waxman agreed with Ross that the entire committee — not just the Blue Dogs — “have great concern on the cost of the legislation.”

“That is a view that is not just theirs, but ours as well,” Waxman said.

In a statement before the meeting, Obama largely blamed Republicans for holding up legislation in the House.

So, we have Rep. Ross, leader of the Blue Dogs on the committee, saying that he wants to wait for the CBO to score (cost) the bill before voting on it. His biggest concern is cost-cutting (Duh!)

The Democrats met with the President for an hour, and “left abruptly”. Then even Waxman agrees that the entire committee, not just the Blue Dogs have concerns about the cost of the bill.

So, Obama meets with Democrats, who worry about the cost of the bill, and want to see a CBO scoring, after Obama meets with the CBO chief to tell him what he wants to hear. The meeting breaks off abruptly, no decisions are made, and Obama comes out and blames the Republicans.

HUH?

Let’s see, which party has the majority in the House? Not the Republicans, for the last 2-1/2 years.

Wake up, Mr. President!!! The American people DON’T want higher taxes for socialized medicine, and they’re probably screaming into the Blue Dogs’ phones! It’s OUR money, and WE want to keep it!!!

So not only should you be running for public office, you could sideline as a comedian! Perfect combination for the mood of the Nation.

LOGAN’S RUN… Coming soon to a country near you. Of course well connected, moneyed, and party officials are exempt.

“Maybe you’re better off not having the surgery, but taking painkillers.“

Yeah, and if you take enough of them, well, heck, that’s two problems solved.

Obama’s coming up with a new plan, a new scheme, a new crisis, every other day is no accident. Innundate the electorate so much so that they can’t catch their breath.

coldwarrior on July 21, 2009 at 5:14 PM

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every step you take
He’ll be controlling you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every night you stay
He’ll be controlling you

Oh, cant you see
You now belong to the collective Obama we
To control all your life how his heart does ache
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every dollar you make
Every claim you stake
He’ll be controlling you

will you be my first voter? :)

ted c on July 21, 2009 at 5:31 PM

I can see it now. Democrats will have a new cap and trade system for life. You get to live to be 65. You can trade some of your years for cash to spend now and the purchaser can buy them and live longer.

Call it “Obama’s Run”

I’d like an outraged audience shot after that nonsense he just spouted off.

If anyone has ever had to jump through hoops and spend time on the phone with a voice on the other end that has NO medical knowledge(or clue about the providers in your area)-just to get a procedure approved for a seriously ill child (in an “out of network” hospital) when you have insurance….you know the feeling

…as does the medical professional who has to convince insurance companies their patient needs more time in the hospital or **fill in the blank with procedure/medication of your choice**

Obamacare will be 100 times worse; as will the outcome for the patient

Slugging it out with a PPO is one thing; but “You vs Obamacare” will be an entirely new ball game.

Under Obamacare, this will be called a Partial Death Procedure.

To be followed up with Alaskan Ice Floe Therapy.

This reminds me of “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” by Chris Deburgh in the ’80s…
