Quote of the day

“You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. So you loosed a multi-column primal scream: Palin is an idiot who is ‘out of her depth in a shallow pool’, a woman who has no sense of personal limits because she is not even smart enough to realize she is ‘a ponder-free zone.’ Whoa-good one! The rhetorical equivalent of the chickenwing camel clutch, where you come up behind and twist her arm behind her back, and then force her face to the mat. Or, in her case, to the snow. That’s what they have in Alaska, don’t they? You don’t know, of course-Martha’s Vineyard is about as far north as you venture, and then only to observe humanity-you know, the common folks-from ‘a little pier’ before strolling over for dinner with two of the more brilliant stars in your friends firmament, television personalities Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric…

You hang with the grandees, and they understand the world. Unlike Sarah Palin, who uses a pier simply to fish and wouldn’t know a winsome observation if it jumped into her net. And you just don’t understand the crowds, the admiration for someone who owns the kind of fishing boat that is not equipped with a champagne cooler. Oh, the unfairness of it all!

Ugh. Schwartz is committing the same sin that Noonan is: bashing a fellow right-winger who isn’t exactly like them, whose right-wing views aren’t *quite* pure enough.

Stop it, both of you. You’re doing the Democrats’ work for them. Aren’t there enough leftists for you to criticize?

Pogroms and purges never made any party stronger.

Here’s one from the more proletarian wikipedia:

That one works just fine as well.

Identity politics is political action to advance the interests of members of a group whose members perceive themselves to be oppressed by virtue of a shared and marginalized identity

Let’s see…Palin is pursuing political action to advance the interests of the “gun toting church going working class whites” whose members perceive themselves to be oppressed by “elites”.

In other words, your party’s bread and butter with its Factions of the Outraged.

Apparently it’s not only my party’s bread and butter anymore. See:David Letterman v. Palin (2009).

The first turn-off for me was when, during her first public statement as a VP candidate, she made reference to “breaking the glass ceiling.” Seemed kinda contrary to what we, as conservatives, were supposed to be all about. I could go on, but I think it might make your head explode.

Nothing you say would make my “head explode”. I’m sure I’ve heard it all before. Ad nauseam.

The root of it, I think, is the feeling that no woman who looks that good has a right to be anything other than barefoot and pregnant.

Ok ok, you were right. I guess Palin’s gender is a big part of her identity politics as well.

Peggy’s dislike of Palin is not based on principle. That is why Peggy often resorts to catty ridicule when criticizing Palin.

It may not be jealousy, but it is obviously personal in nature. It is petulant, petty, and puerile. Peggy needs to knock it off. We are battling for the life and soul of our Republic, our very way of life.

Give me a break. How many politicians are probed on the intellectual merits? Really? You mean, how much they know about Montesquieu and Locke?

Yes, precisely. Abigail Adams would’ve been familiar with either. She had an undeniable impact on one of our most influential founding fathers’ views; why shouldn’t we expect the same erudition from our contemporary politicians, man or woman.

The problem is that with Palin the goalposts are continually being moved, the bar is continually being set higher. The root of it, I think, is the feeling that no woman who looks that good has a right to be anything other than barefoot and pregnant.

If anything, the bar is being set lower. Her resignation speech isn’t subject to critique because she was just winging it. Who cares about her views on immigration? She took the time to affirm a view that even most Democrats accept. The frivolous (I use the term loosely) attacks on her are out-of-bounds to begin with, nevermind that even Obama has to deal with attacks on his very citizenship. There is no objection to Palin that isn’t met with an ever-diminishing expectation of her ability to defend herself in speech or in print.

Noonan’s criticisms weren’t “substantive”, by the way. They were cheap ad hominem dreck that we’ve been reading for 11 months now. I can’t bear THAT anymore.

ddrintn on July 22, 2009 at 12:25 AM

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. Your “beyond the mundane” co-founders —
“buds” as the Sarah Palin types so crassly put it-for your new venture are the essence of
your kind of middle America: they include “60 Minutes” reporter Lesley Stahl; actresses
Candice Bergen (actress, Democratic and Planned Parenthood spokesperson), Whoopi
Goldberg (dropped by advertisers after a nasty Bush joke at a Democratic fundraiser and
then hired by The View, a Barbara Walters talk show on ABC ), and Marlo Thomas
(a major Democratic donor who is married to Bush-hater Phil Donahue), your type of
conservatives, which puts them a bit to the right of Hugo Chavez.
But after a year the
audience is less than 20 percent of what you defined as success, your investors are worried,
and the same women who pack Sarah Palin rallies are ignoring your venture, which features
such pieces as “Michelle Obama’s Scintillating Style” and “French Fashion Designers Churn
Out Stylish Burqhas.”

What is wrong with this country? Isn’t anyone a real conservative anymore? Don’t they listen
to you? Can’t they read without moving their lips?

You’re Peggy Noonan and you’re jealous. And, worst of all, Sarah Palin is not.

Stuart H. Schwartz, Ph.D., is a former newspaper and retail executive. He is on the faculty

What’s the comparable attack on Palin? Trig trutherism is as stupid as BC trutherism, but Noonan hasn’t remotely touched that issue. She’s made a lot of the same criticisms that conservatives have fairly leveled at Obama. Nobody seems to get around to answering the criticisms, though. They either claim it’s somehow sexist (like any attack on Obama is racist), or pretend it isn’t relevant. Obama is bizarro Palin, and Palin is bizarro Obama. It’s creepy.

I wouldn’t quite say that. It’s obvious just from the comments here that Palin is surrounded by the same sort of cult of personality that Obama is. Don’t dare mention that she was implementing a windfall profits tax on oil companies in Alaska at the exact same time we were tearing Obama apart for suggesting such a tax at the federal level. Don’t dare question whether her cuts to the Alaska budget were anything more sustainable than publicity stunts like selling airplanes on eBay.

As long as conservatives are satisfied with “she doesn’t need to be smart because she’s so damn virtuous,” Noonan’s criticism will resonate. The only effective response to Noonan’s (and many others) charges is to show how Palin really does have a serious political philosophy, rather than a convenient cultural identity.

Palin responds to the crap dumped on her earlier today:

Statement from Sarah Palin on Legal Fund News Report
Today at 1:46am

“I find the notion that I have taken any action pertaining to the legal defense trust fund misguided and factually in error. I am informed that this fund was created by experienced attorneys in DC and was modeled after other similar funds established for senators and others. The fund itself was not created by me nor is it controlled by me. Neither I nor my lawyer has received a penny from this fund, and I am informed the Trustee was withholding any action or payment pending final resolution with the Personnel Board. This is the hallmark of legal compliance and prudent conduct.

In short, I have not ‘acted’ relative to the defense fund and it is misleading to say I have. I have no doubt that the Trust will welcome guidance by the Board, as do we all, but it is my understanding that this matter was not resolved and the complainant’s violation of law has served to mislead the public and prejudice a fair review of this matter.”

Give me specifics. “Small government” is a slogan, not a policy. Tell me how Sarah plans to make government smaller. Because she hasn’t done that yet.

Caiwyn on July 22, 2009 at 2:18 AM

The Schwarts is strong with Palin.

Who’d thunk Noonan was a rotten RINO

That was the best gawd damned article I’ve read all year.

Kini on July 22, 2009 at 2:54 AM

Kini…

I don’t know if Noonan’s a RINO as much as she is an ELITIST.

Palin would simply not fit in her social circle and does not have that crazysmart book learning that the current occupant of 1600 Pa Avenue has. Which btw is working out so great for America, isn’t it?

powerpro on July 22, 2009 at 3:12 AM

Noonan has now shown herself to be one of the so-called “liberated women” who beleive that freedom equates to contrarianism. She has long presented herself as a “Liberated”conservative woman, but she never realized that her version of “liberation” is nothing more than a farce that would ultimately be exposed. Now,faced with a REAL liberated woman, she can do nothing but run away or attack. She can’t run away because to do so would mean admitting her own view of a “strong woman” is seriously mistaken,so her only recourse is to attack that which is threatening her self-image
Sarah IS what all the so-called feminists wish they could be,but can never be, because their point of view is decided by someone else.Sarah chooses her own route, and if anyone doesn’t like it,that is their problem, not Sarah’s.The best definition of freedom is not acting against stereotype,it is ignoring stereotype.
Beauty queen, successful business woman, lovng mother and wife, successful politician(who served her costituents excellently),adored by not only her husband and children, but by half of a nation.Shoot ,if I was Peggy,I’d probably hate her, too.
Peggy, let go of that which doesn’t matter and learn something from Sarah.

DDT on July 22, 2009 at 4:05 AM

BOOM!
Both my wife and I have enjoyed Ms. Noonan as a writer and personality, so it has been perplexing, especially for her, to understand how PN could be so bitchy about SP – so condescending.
Thanks Stuart. We needed that.

The sad thing is that Peggy Noonan, back in her salad days, worked hard to overcome the “STUPID” label that people stuck on Ronald Reagan. Her greatest successes were in maintaining the integrity of Reagan’s Conservative message, even as he was being savaged as a know-nothing dolt.

Now the shoe is on the other foot, and Noonan is leading the charge, calling another generation of Conservatives know-nothing dolts. It is as if she is jealously protecting her youthful accomplishments, and making sure nobody else is able to overcome the chattering classes that dismiss conservative thought, instead of dealing with it honestly. Because is Sarah Palin is able to succeed without Peggy Noonan, then what Noonan did for Reagan, way back then, really wasn’t all that remarkable, after all…

gridlock2 on July 22, 2009 at 5:54 AM

It’s the same old story… Conservatives are low-brow, moronic, dolts, who just don’t understand anything complicated. Palin, GW Bush, GHW Bush, Reagan, Ford, Eisenhower, Hoover, etc… The only exception was Nixon. They couldn’t call Nixon stupid, so they called him evil.

And yet all these stupid men keep getting elected President of the United States. Remarkable!

gridlock2 on July 22, 2009 at 5:55 AM

Let’s see, a very attractive woman, wife, mother. Executive, in fact states biggest executive in the largest most “manly”, wilderness state, very successful. Can hunt, fish, drive snowmobiles, “bring home the bacon”, run for VP.

99% of women SHOULD be jealous. She IS the ideal woman.

jimmy2shoes on July 22, 2009 at 7:02 AM

I’m not a fan of Noonan–I think her writing is treacly–but I am really tired of the “jealous” accusation any time a woman questions or opposes another woman. Palin is a beautiful woman admired by many, but that doesn’t mean that any woman who questions her is jealous. I can’t imagine anyone saying that a man who opposes a male politician is “just jealous.”

I’m totally a Sarah fan. She has the “common touch” from outside the beltway that I think is going to sweep the nation in 2010 after 4 years of Mr. Arrogance, Big-spender, Transparency.

I also hope she uses the next 3 1/2 years to do her homework, studying foreign policy, economics, etc. AND ESPECIALLY, I hope she studies Spanish and becomes fluent. Then when she’s running, she’ll totally stun everyone by giving some campaign speeches in Spanish.

The TOTUS is not fluent in Spanish and will be stunned, and knocked off his game.

I don’t have a college degree. IMHO college/university education is promoted too heavily and at the expense of trades, rugged individualism, and independent thought.

So now we have a society run by betas who couldn’t get out of a tight situation without their staff, mommy, or 911.

I can only speak for myself, but I support Palin because her life backs up her words, and her life and words reflect my own: God, family, hard work, patriotism, and a thorough disdain for bureaucracy.

You don’t get those things in a classroom, no matter how much you paid for it.

Bartrams Garden on July 22, 2009 at 12:27 AM

The more I think about your comment the more annoying it becomes. Don’t you get that the majority of noonans snotty elitist opinions came during the presidential race? A race that mccain was unlikely to win anyway but gave us a fascist regime that may never give up power. The whole point of the article was that noonans class identity is more important to her then principle, ethics and ideas. Maybe you are part of that strange effete class or are so bitter and disappointed by your lot in life that you long to be.

Unseen gets it. I’m not knocking education, but some folks aren’t meant to go from lecture halls and labs to white collar careers. And intelligence has nothing to do with it.

I hope. ;)
