Rasmussen: Obama 45, Romney 45; Obama 48, Palin 42
posted at 2:11 pm on July 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
This says more about the downturn in The One’s approval ratings than it does about Mitt or Sarahcuda, but you know the Hot Air policy: You can never have too many 2012 polls.
Just 21% of voters nationwide say Palin should run as an independent if she loses the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Sixty-three percent (63%) say the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee should not run as an independent. Sixteen percent (16%) are not sure.
If Romney secured the GOP nomination and Palin chose to run as an independent candidate, Obama would win the resulting three-way race with 44% of the vote. Romney is the choice of 33% of the voters under that scenario, with Palin a distant third with 16% support. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided…
When Romney is the Republican nominee, he beats Obama among unaffiliated voters 48% to 41%. But when Palin is the GOP candidate, unaffiliated voters prefer Obama by a 47% to 41% margin…
In a three-way race, Palin hurts Romney by drawing 28% Republican support. Romney captures 52% of the GOP vote in that scenario.
Lest anyone doubt how overwhelming Palin’s support is among the HA readership, compare those boldfaced numbers to the results of our own poll last Monday. We love you guys, but in case it wasn’t clear from last year’s primaries, a mirror image of Republican voters you ain’t.
Question: Why didn’t Rasmussen poll Obama vs. Huckabee? Public Policy Polling has its own set of 2012 hypothetical match-ups out today and Huck fares best among the big three, trailing The One by six points — the fourth time in as many PPP polls that he’s been Obama’s toughest challenge. Palin trails by eight and Romney by nine (despite doing relatively well with black voters). The most interesting detail comes from another PPP poll taken last week, though: Contrary to expectations, Palin is viewed favorably by 86 percent of Republican voters in the northeast, fully 10 points higher than she is in the south. I’m not sure what explains that — maybe the Republican base in New England has now shrunk to a Hot-Air-ish molten red core so that, paradoxically, “true conservatives” fare better up there than RINOs (see, e.g., Toomey and Specter in Pennsylvania) — but needless to say, it could mean trouble for Romney. If Palin does run, it’s easy to imagine her leveraging evangelicals to squeak through in Iowa; an upset in New Hampshire immediately after that would make her the prohibitive favorite. Expect Team Mitt to work quietly behind the scenes between now and then to make sure as many GOP primaries as possible are open ones.

Blowback

Palin would be smart to hook up with the Tea party protesters. She has indicated she isn’t supporting a particular political party, only better solutions to the problems of Americans. Makes her perfect for the Tea party.

I don’t think it is going to be either Palin or Romney in 2012. More to the point, I don’t want to lose focus from what is really important here. Fighting for every damned seat in Congress that is up for reelection in 2010.
This past six months shows why checks and balances are important. One political party has managed to bankrupt generations not born with their schemes to reward special interests and big political contributors. The only way to put a stop to that is take back Congress from the criminals that are doing this. From now until November 3rd 2010 (day after the election) the steady drumbeat needs to be on restoring checks to a broken system by defeating as many Democrats as humanly possible. That will take money, organization, and extreme effort.
Only afterward is it legitimate to play what if games for 2012. Then the primary question will have to be who is best qualified to clean up the filthy liar’s messes.

What this poll means is that both Palin and Romney would clean Obamas plow if the election were today, we know from history how Rasmussen has always held bias towards liberals and even more so for Obama.
Speakup on July 20, 2009 at 2:28 PM
I think the Republican party is getting what it deserves for squandering its control of government. And I love Sarah Palin. But if she runs on an independent ticket in 2012 and splits the vote like Perot did, I will get into a helicopter and snipe her like wolf in the wild.
Obama will be one term president. That has to be the only goal of every conservative and libertarian. Whether it’s Sarah, Romney, Dick Cheney or Nixon’s reanimated corpse, Obama has to go down in 2012. No personal pride, no BS, just teamwork.

Palin isn’t running. No one is going to elect a President who resigned their only major political office.
Speedwagon82 on July 20, 2009 at 2:30 PM
My question: Why does this post (and the poll earlier) artificially limit Palin to a third-party run? It’s much more likely she will run (if she chooses to) for the GOP nod. This poll says she is currently sitting in #2 spot in the GOP race (pretty good position for “dead”) and 6 points behind a newbie Prez who was inaugurated 6 months ago today ain’t bad.
Why not admit the possibility that she may go for all the marbles as the GOP candidate?
Dude, I don’t see her “squeaking through” in Iowa personally. I’m also not convinced Romney will be able to buy enough airtime to get the votes he’ll need.
cs89 on July 20, 2009 at 2:31 PM
I noticed in terms of party, 42% of respondents identified themselves as demokrats, and in terms of philosophy, 43% identified themselves as moderates, both pluralities. So, Palin comes in at 43% against O’debt? And her favorables are higher than all other listed potential GOP candidates. Sounds encouraging to me.
anglee99 on July 20, 2009 at 2:31 PM
Huh? Election day in 2012 is on November 6th. Are you implying that Ogabe will announce himself winner two days before the inevitable victory by Sarah?

Too soon to know. If Palin continues to become active nationwide in Conservative and other GOP campaigns and as to issues, she’ll blossom in how people perceive her and understand her capabilties. There’s still time for that to happen.

In 2008, Romney was running double-digits behind both Obama and Hillary in hypothetical Rasmussen match-ups, while McCain stayed close to both of them, until the banks tanked in late September.
If Romney ties Obama now, it’s because lots of voters have figured out that Obama is an ECONOMIC disaster, and they see Romney as a successful businessman and economic leader who can actually solve problems rather than mouthing platitudes about hope and change. In an election dominated by the economy, Mormonism becomes a non-issue, while economic competence is everything.
Unless Obama suddenly changes course and the economy rebounds, look for Romney’s numbers to surge against Obama in the coming months.
As for Sarah Palin, her current numbers are probably hurt by all the negative press she has received, as well as a new reputation as a “quitter” due to her decision to resign as Governor. She may rebound if she can play a positive role of “kingmaker” in the 2010 Congressional elections, but she probably wouldn’t want to become a “spoiler” in 2012 to hand Obama a second term by running a maverick third-party campaign, similar to the way Ross Perot put Bill Clinton in office in 1992 by siphoning votes from Bush 41. If Palin and her ideas are still popular in 2012, Romney could take advantage of her by selecting her as a running mate. If she is not popular by then, Romney would be better off selecting a strong foreign-policy expert (David Petraeus?) for VP.
2012: It’s the economy, stupid. Just like 1992.

Here’s my case in a nutshell. This woman bore more pain, criticism, heckling, berating, chastisement and scorn than any other female candidate for any office in American history. Did she shrink quietly away from her desire to serve this nation? No.
Her family has been through hell. She has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend herself against frivolent suits that proved naught.
She’s a Patriot, she’s brave, bright, has common sense, good values and will call a spade a spade. Is she a nice person? I don’t know if she is. But she’s got some ballz on her and she’s looking out for this Country.
That’s a lot more than I can say for the numbnuts we’ve been employing for the last 20 some odd years.
