“those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent it…”

Israel and Taiwan have recognized the new legal government in Tegucigalpa. A few Israeli advisors and a team of Taiwan Rangers might be sufficient. [We may have to ignore the Monroe Doctrine and corrollaries for a few weeks, but this Administration is ignoring every other article of law anyway...]

Under normal circumstances (non Obama) it should not be hard to swing whatever credibility Zelaya left away from him.

Seriously, it is ridiculous to think that anyone who is term limited and has to leave office in 4 months, like Zelaya does, can be seen starting a civil war to bring hiself back to power and keep his international legitimacy.

Look I think Chavez is spoiling for a fight, he has to punish Honduras badly for his own credibility’s sake. And that’s my fear that the Honduran military will be swamped while international opinion will be held in check by Obama. Is there nothing enterprising private citizens here in the heart of the empire can do to help?

Get the word out, as you have been doing, to every blog and site possible.

Get it out to our Congress critters, with documentation, as you have provided.

Use the net to contact folks inside Honduras, let them know that there are Americans up North who view them as the good guys.

Deluge the White House with letters, emails, faxes, and phone calls to let them know that if what Obama is doing in Honduras is right, what is there left to be called wrong?

I think Reagan would heartily approve.

From CNN

Homeless stand in for lobbyists on Capitol Hill

Squatting next to a white wall outside a Senate hearing room recently with a cell phone glued to his ear, Gomes is being paid to hold a place in line for a lobbyist at a hearing on the climate-change bill.

As the need for couriers on Capitol Hill declined with e-mail and fax, courier services like Quick Messenger Service of DC, Inc. have added the service of contracting men and women to hold places in line for lobbyists at hearings.

The seats are valuable to lobbyists because the hearing is often their only face time with legislators.

Good point. Israel’s experiences would probably be very complimentary to Honduras’ right now. I hope they’re on the ground already. Between the two they’ll have a better shot, I think, at being prepared for all eventualities.

I’m glad Taiwan picked the right side. I’ve long been a fan of sorts and would have hated boycotting their products.

Elduende, you know more about the region that me, how is the relationship between Venezuela and Columbia? I know it’s not good, but if the Venezuelan military is busy with an engagement in Honduras, what are the chances that Columbia may use the opportunity to solve some of their problems in Venezuela? Do they have the capability?

How do you think Chavez would calculate that risk?

It seems like Columbia’s reaction, and our base in Honduras (Obama’s pusillanimity aside), are the biggest factors that may stay Chavez’s hand. He also has other allies, though, which complicates the picture.

The Colombian military is not to be trifled with, which is why you’ll recall Chavez stepped back from his threats and ridiculous posturing in March of last year. The Colombian Army is three times the size of the Venezuelan military, is US trained and has enormous combat experience. However, Colombia will not do a thing against Venezuela, this Honduran situation is not their fight and they have a commitment against the FARC.

Covertly, who knows if they’ll help Honduras. Just as Chavez has discounted us I’m sure he has discounted Colombia.

As for our base in Palmerola, despite what Chavez says, it must be keeping him guessing how far he can go in terms of overtly aiding Zelaya to foment an insurgency.

William Amos on July 19, 2009 at 12:48 AM

Way back in the early 80’s I was at Washington National Airport with my daughter, then about six years old. Senator Goldwater was in the terminal, along with all the other regular folks, heading out on a flight. I pointed him out to my daughter, and apparently the Senator heard me. He stopped, walked over, said hello to my daughter, and actually bent down and had a short conversation with her. Different times. Not like today.

A few years ago, my daughter, was spending time with Bob Dole, he was a keynote speaker at a convention she was honchoing, and she mentioned the meet-and-greet with Goldwater. Dole asked, “So, are you a Republican?” “Been a Conservative since I was six years old.” was her reply.
