jazz_piano on July 18, 2009 at 9:49 PM

An extraordinarily compelling case for freedom and individuality. I heard a clarion call for conservative activism. I heard the President encourage the individual in their God-given talents and reinforce the idea that they are endowed by their Creator with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We were all blessed to have such a man of character and substance in the White House.

A significant contrast to the current occupant… a significant contrast indeed.

As to Anninca’s comment, after reading several of her previous posts (and her comment that she was not “surprised” that Reagan had Alzheimer’s disease) I think -and hope for her sake – that she is far too young to remember his presidency.

I’m really not surprised that there are segments of our population don’t “get” Ronald Reagan. If I were a devious conservative who inherited a statist liberal socialized health care plan once we ejected them from office, I’d continue my euthanization and cleansing project in that sector.

The good thing about Reagan, is that he inspired each of us to be an individual. Reagan embodied strength and gave it in great helpings–and he strengthened us through that. The statist liberal; however, merely takes and leaves us weaker in the process.

What fool would choose that route?

In Ann’s world everything is nonsense. Nothing is what it is, because everything is what it isn’t. What it must be, it can’t be and contrary wise, what it can’t be, it must be. You see?

Cheshire Cat on July 18, 2009 at 10:13 PM

We need health care reform. But reform should not come through health INSURANCE reform.

If you provide insurance, you won’t do anything about cost. Even if you provide insurance to ‘compete’ against private insurance.

The misconception is that the rising health insurance premiums is the problem. Rising health insurance premiums are a symptom. The problem is the cost of the CLAIMS that the health insurance pays, not the premiums of the health insurance plans.

I have my issues with health insurance companies. I’ve had battles with them, and I would agree that profits need to be removed from the insurance system as much as possible.

But if you try to reform health care through the insurance mechanism, you won’t fix the problem. You will merely disrupt the system that currently provides revenue for our health care system.

Prescient.

The GOP needs to re-run this ad in every market possible and now.

This recording was a small phonograph that was copied and mailed to households across the United States. It was done by unashamed conservatives who wanted to help American opponents of health care “talk back” to other private citizens.

It would be easier and cheaper to send a speech ten times as long, to a hundred times as many consumers, than in Reagan’s era…if the GOP were as sincere and dedicated to any message.

I saw this video earlier when Jonah Goldberg posted it at The Corner. Thanks, AP, for posting it here.

AnninCA, I’m a California native who hopes you’ll stick around and learn about conservatism, of which Ronald Reagan was the most influential practioner of the 20th century — with mentor William F. Buckley a close second.

Reagan was a great communicator — acknowledged as such even by detractors Bill Clinton and Barack Obama — because he knew how to convey big ideas with immediate authenticity to all Americans over the heads of the mainstream media. He was a great president because he was able to implement so many of his big ideas despite constant obstruction from the entrenched beltway bureaucracy.

Reagan remains so influential on American politics of the past 30 years that that every liberal candidate — even Barack Obama — has had to run as a faux moderate or faux conservative after Reagan made the word liberal a political profanity. I grew up calling him Uncle Ronnie — although I only ever met him at campaign stops — and I count living under his governance in California and the White House as one of the huge blessings of my life.

Terrie on July 18, 2009 at 10:28 PM

You’re saying that Mr. Reagan’s ideas about personal liberty and freedom for everybody around the world need to be abandoned ?

As a follow-up, surmising that you would answer “yes” to the above question based on your post……….

This question as well requires only you to type “yes” or “no” as an answer.

So then Ann, you would be perfectly ok with someone in a position of governmental authority giving you official notice that you can no longer watch anything other than a single state-run media outlet, cannot legally defend yourself anywhere at any time (I am NOT talking about with a gun) and officially removing your right to speak out anywhere at any time against this ruling body at penalty of incarceration or worse ?

I have my issues with health insurance companies. I’ve had battles with them, and I would agree that profits need to be removed from the insurance system as much as possible.

management cost is very low for healthcare industry already.
True Health care reform needs to be done. Not socializing and destroying it. No single payer ever!
Good health care reform should include-
Choice- We should have freedom to choose among many insurance plans, not just what we are offered by our employer. This way we could choose options and pay different amounts depending on our needs. This would cause competition among insurance companies and lower costs.
Portability- When we move between jobs and states, we should be able to take our insurance with us.
Unemployment protection- part of the insurance should have provision to keep our insurance between jobs and not be so expensive we have to drop it or eat. If we are unemployed so long that it stops then we should be able to start it up again with out waiting period when we find a new job or other income to pay for it.
Retirement provision- take it to our later years when we retire and eliminate Medicare.
Modernization- Computerized medical records, that we own not the government.
Privatize- Medicare and SS.
Give back government health care programs to states.
If they didn’t rip off SS and Medicare in past, then there would be excess funds to help those in need.
Running money through federal government and then back to states results in lost revenue.
If we make federal government smaller and lower taxes then people would be able to afford healthcare and states would have room to have own healthcare program for truly needy.

Manly has an excellent letter posted on his blog its to Congressman/senator ________.

I sent it to both of my senators .The lib one has articles all over his website extolling the virtues of Obamacare and that he passed it out of his committee. What a contrast a letter from a nurse and lib/socialist political hack lying points.
We need a spokesperson to rally the troops before this crap sandwich is forced down our throats and destroys the best medical service known to man!

Well, we know you’re not from Massachusetts – you only have one senator that can be called “the lib one.”

Lucky (or half lucky, anyway,) you.

I didn’t think he was a great commuicator..

You’ve got 2 be kidding me. Reagan not a great communicator? You not may agree with Reagan’s policies but to say that he didn’t write and delivered good speeches is nuts. He surely was a better communicator than both Bushes and Clinton. I’ll admit is Obama is good communicator, I just don’t agree with most of policies but I still give him credit.
