Obama promises: I won’t sign any health-care bill that adds to the deficit

posted at 12:55 pm on July 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

That’s how the Times is spinning it, but read the fine print. What he actually says is he won’t sign any bill that adds to our deficits over the next decade. The One knows this is a sinkhole in the long run even if it isn’t in the short run — which, per the CBO, it almost certainly is. No worries, though: “I don’t believe that government can or should run health care,” he assures us, ignoring the fact that he once famously said he doesn’t want to run the auto companies … a month after he forced the chairman of GM into early retirement. No wonder some prominent Democrats now want to, um, run the auto companies.

Oh, and he’s still lying about letting you keep your current insurance if you like it, oblivious to the reality of what’ll happen to private insurers forced to compete with a program backed by the Treasury Department’s printing presses. But then, as he candidly says here, “I … don’t think insurance companies should have free reign to do as they please.” That’s Obamanomics in a nutshell. Make sure to read Betsy McCaughey’s rejoinder in today’s New York Post about the difference between your current health plan, the “qualified plan” you’ll be forced to choose under ObamaCare, and the penalties you’ll pay if you prefer not to “qualify.” Should be a fun presser on Wednesday night.

Update: Looking on the bright side, at least we know now what his next bald-faced revisionist lie about his record will be. How many months or years before he treats us to this: “But let me be clear. We have never denied that health-care reform might temporarily add to our deficits.”

Obama, however, is acting like each piece of legislation is his last. What happens when he is dealt a stunning loss?

I don’t mean this in a disrespectful or mean-spirited way, nor do I intend to pathologize him just to discredit him, but I suspect that the President has some serious personality issues stemming from his childhood.

Does everyone remember the kid growing up who wanted desperately to be liked, lied habitually, and didn’t seem to get that it wasn’t okay?

Morris was the first one I saw that addressed the detrimental impact of Obama’s plan on Medicare and seniors. These folks can and will derail Obama if they are allowed time to learn of and digest this travesty. Obama’s time is running out because seniors are the most politically active voters.

From Politico 30 mins ago:
In his most recent remarks, President Obama has stopped mentioning what had been his mantra — that the House and Senate finish their health-care bills by the August recess — and switched to a less specific call to fast action.

This looks like a crack in the facade. Backing away from the false timeline. Grassley had mentioned he had big concerns with this Aug false deadline.

Does this represent an early sign that he’s conceding defeat?

interesting. I had read somewhere that he was abandoned three times before the age of 10–mom, dad and someone else. Landed at Grandma and grandpas house. Sad, but the cost of a fatherless childhood is now in the trillions.

Did you hear his call for fathers to step up the other night. It was pretty passionate and I thought it was actually a fairly good speech.

Yeah, his emphasis on responsible fatherhood may be the only thing he and I would agree upon.

Fatherhood (and motherhood) matter, and I feel sad for anyone abandoned. In no way am I excusing his decisions or the values he’s chosen, but that sort of childhood would explain some of his personality problems.

He makes the case against Social Security and socialized medicine.

Some suggested that Senate Majority Leader Reid would use the fast-track reconciliation process for health care reform so he would need only 51 votes for Senate passage. I continue to maintain my April view that this is highly unlikely, because reconciliation carries its own process costs. Major portions of the bill would likely drop out, allowing Leader Reid to pass only a Swiss cheese version of their desired reform.

Ted C & elduende on July 18, 2009 at 9:32 PM

Hennessey doesn’t rule out using reconciliation altogether but he definitely thinks it is highly unlikely since portions of the bill creating exchanges and mandates for employers etc can’t be done through reconciliation.

I would not say Obama would not do it, but it might also end up being a victory for us because it would be pretty weak legislation. He could definitely increase the taxes on the upper 1%. First he has to have something complete from Senate Finance though doesn’t he?

interesting point. This guy is so apparently empty, vacuous and devoid of anything resembling character or substance it just makes me wonder how he’ll ever regain his footing if he loses this battle. He is absolutely spending every round of political capital on this–his reserve tank is getting tapped. He will expend all kinds of congressmen to get this done and may likely still lose. My gut is telling me that Obama’s political capital is spent. Obama’s popularity does not extend to his socialist policies. If Obama wins this healthcare fight his party will lose Congress badly next year, therefore in an effort to minimize the damage to themselves they will either defeat him to save themselves and deny him anymore “victories” or as I think less likely give him this win and definitely enact no more of his agenda. Win or lose his capital is spent.

Ted c,

I don’t know what region of the country you’re in, but maybe you should run for office.

jazz_piano on July 18, 2009 at 10:26 PM

It was fortunate for him that the economy was slumping right at the time of the election last year. But, that’s a door that swings both ways. That 2-3% of people are definitely swinging the other way now that they’re losing jobs, 401ks and so forth. Moreover, they’re openly questioning the foolishness that is deficit spending writ large. So, 52% was a fact last November–but just like gas was $4/gal last year, it’s $2.50 this year–stuff changes like the wind.

Obama was fortunate enough to run with a fairly clean slate from the Senate and IL. Those days are OVER jack! His slate is etched in stone everyday and the story ain’t pretty. Those 2-3% who loved Obama last November are singing a tune and I betcha it goes like “Lovin’ Obama ain’t gonna fill my fridge tonight.” So, if there were an election tomorrow and Sarah Palin were to shout Tax Cuts and Jobs awful loud for the next 24—I bets you that Mr. Barack Throckmorton Obama would be standing outside in the global warming cold with a widdle tin cup tomorrow.

Anyone remember the kid that believed he really was god’s gift to humanity?? I think Obama really believes his own press. When he’s getting the applause and he gives that big wide gay like grin,, that is strange. He’s POTUS but he can’t take people making fun of his ears.
Obama has come a long way far. He has accomplished a few things like campaigning, winning a few elections and getting an agenda passed during a honeymoon period. He has been accomplished at waving to crowds and giving speeches to adoring fans under the watchful eye of an adoring press. He is accomplished at intimidating certain people.
But, the one thing he has yet to do is win a re-election. He’s never won re-election to anything,,, nor has he ever really had a record to run on. He’s always based his campaigns against an incumbent. He has no experience at campaigning on a record either. It is one thing to campaign against an incumbent and make big promises of change and hope,,,, it is quite another to run for re-election on a record. Especially if that record included things like melting your nation.

It must be very frustrating to an elite,,, an elite like Obama,,, the most powerful man in the world. He can travel the world with the best security, eat the best foods, have an audience with anyone. Celebrities, beautiful women, the powerful and rich of the world. He has the power to send men to die. He can start a world war if he really wanted to. And yet,, your future can be determined by some uneducated backwoods voters who may not even know the way to Washington or how to spell it. A humble man or woman who understood freedom can and would accept that. But an elite like Obama?? No,, that is one reason America must be remade.

JellyToast on July 18, 2009 at 10:39 PM

All of his efforts are aimed at assuaging the pain of the past. The lack of a father to play ball with, so he poses as a Sox fan. The lack of true skills as an author, so he has Ayers write books for him and now he has Favreau et al. make him look good. The poseur law student and law professor now has the opportunity to appoint someone just like him to the SCOTUS. As a senator he wrote the laws that he didn’t have to follow, he had risen above that. I think all of this behavior is a steady attempt at vindication of a lifetime of disappointments and pain. He’s been steadily empowered by sycophants and has this malleable identity issue he brings out depending on whom he is talking to. He’s everything to all people, so people will like him.

If you work in healthcare, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to be the labor that builds the Golem that destroys our country. Are you prepared to deny services, ration medicines, procedures, therapies, etc… and have less protection from the lawyers? Moreover, Will you be willing to put the Obama oligarchy in permanent power by simply showing up for work and doing your job according to their rules? Are you?

You do realize the Constitution places SPECIFIC limits on what the Federal Govt can spend tax dollars on, right? Didn’t think so. They do not have the authority to take MY MONEY to pay for YOUR healthcare insurance.

“We declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name—liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names—liberty and tyranny.”

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, 1864

Anyone using the constitution to back up what Obama is doing, should have their head examined.

His presidency is the most anti-constitutional one EVER.
Good God.

B Man on July 19, 2009 at 1:56 AM

The “welfare clause” is part of the preamble, the wording is “promote the general welfare”. The operative word is promote, not “provide”. Further more the preamble is NOT law. As much as AnalinCA and liberals would like it to be, it ain’t!

oldernwiser on July 18, 2009 at 1:59 PM

Actually, it does occur within the Articles of the Constitution”

Article I, section 8 of the U. S. Constitution grants Congress the power to “lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts, and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common defense and general Welfare of the United States.

In the Constitution the word “welfare” is used in the context of states and not persons. The “welfare of the United States” is not congruous with the welfare of individuals, people, or citizens.

Speaking of guns…
You have to watch this. A car dealer in Missouri is giving away AK 47’s with truck purchase. He takes on the host of CNN and demolishes her! Watch!

Only those who pay income taxes should be allowed to vote.

That would solve half the problem overnight.

Sapwolf on July 19, 2009 at 2:51 AM

Yeah right. This jerk is just SO freaking believable.

Sapwolf on July 19, 2009 at 2:51 AM

Lets go back to the way it was at one time…long ago, don’t know how long. Had to be back in the late 1700’s though, where only property owners were allowed to vote.

I say that would absolutely negate the power of the socialist fascists we have in government now. Only people with a vested interest in this country would be allowed in the polls. If you don’t own a piece of this country, you have to wait till you do to have any say in how your property is taxed, and how that tax is spent.

To hell with everyone else. Sorry, but it would solve a lot of problems very quickly, guaranteed. For one thing, people like Obambi, pukelosi, and her pet reid would be nothing but bad memories…not soon enough, but it would happen.

Spiritk9 on July 19, 2009 at 4:30 AM

Obama’s time is running out because seniors are the most politically active voters.

elduende on July 18, 2009 at 9:32 PM

Oh, if only that were true. They may have been the most active before, but there is a battle of great import being waged as we move into the future. The youth–indoctrinated in liberalism and too green to have actually experienced the world through their own eyes–will try to be the largest voting bloc in the future. And that’s why all these things “have” to get done now: as those youth graduate into the real world, they will start questioning the theories they hold as gospel right now. But if the “real world” starts looking like their textbooks, then the young never have to get out of their comfort zone.

For all of the (justified) criticism of ObamaCare in the conservative media, their silence on one aspect of this impending disaster is deafening. Under ObamaCare:

1) state laws restricting abortion (such as parental notification requirements) will be overruled
2) pro-life pharmacists will be forced to distribute the “morning after pill” RU-486
3) your tax dollars will help pay for every abortion under the so-called “public option”
4) all health insurance companies will be forced to cover for abortions

There is an Investors Business Daily column that debunks all of the lies that the White House is putting out with regards to health care.

Check it out.

Here is a better link for the WaPo article asking “What next Mr. President, Cardigans?”

I would have never thought that the WaPo would try to resurrect any of its credibility considering its slobbering sycophantic behavior over the last 2 years.

This article was step one in recovery. They have themselves to blame for this.

WaPo is merely trying to regain some credibility for their recent stumble on the Weymouth salons. Read some of the comments on that article. Amazing. There was also an article in the NYT that was unusually straightforward about the problems healthcare was encountering, and I was amazed by actual opposition to Obamacare in the comments from their normally leftwing readers.

txmomof6 on July 19, 2009 at 8:51 AM

It’s a waste of time trying to convince or even break through The AnninCa’s. I just went to a dinner party where I was only one of two who voted for McCain. One of the women who I know well said she couldn’t believe I didn’t vote for Obama and that I thought Palin was a smart gal. These same people never heard of Cap and Trade, were clueless about the healthcare fiasco, and didn’t know that the new science czar wrote a book (in the 60’s) about how to control population growth through putting sterilants in the water system.. These are wealthy, educated Chicagoans. That’s the case for intellectual morons and there’s plenty more where they came from.

All the more reason to continue to prevent overwhelming and compelling evidence that a) socialization of medicine is a horrible idea and b) B. Throckmorton Obama is doing everything he can to extinguish freedom and liberty.

It’s soon going to be very hard to keep this patient alive. I’m sure the White House yes boys will be doing CPR on this legislation all morning on TV.

they want this Frankensteinian legislation to live so that the rest of the economy and Americans can die.

House Democrat Health Bill Adds to Budget Deficit, CBO Says from the Wall Street Journal.

This is why the AMA is supporting the House plan. I guess they figure Reform is inevitable so they want to get what they can out of it. Members of the AMA should write them and protest their position. I bet the state Medical Associations aren’t onboard.
