Obama promises: I won’t sign any health-care bill that adds to the deficit

That’s how the Times is spinning it, but read the fine print. What he actually says is he won’t sign any bill that adds to our deficits over the next decade. The One knows this is a sinkhole in the long run even if it isn’t in the short run — which, per the CBO, it almost certainly is. No worries, though: “I don’t believe that government can or should run health care,” he assures us, ignoring the fact that he once famously said he doesn’t want to run the auto companies … a month after he forced the chairman of GM into early retirement. No wonder some prominent Democrats now want to, um, run the auto companies.
Oh, and he’s still lying about letting you keep your current insurance if you like it, oblivious to the reality of what’ll happen to private insurers forced to compete with a program backed by the Treasury Department’s printing presses. But then, as he candidly says here, “I … don’t think insurance companies should have free reign to do as they please.” That’s Obamanomics in a nutshell. Make sure to read Betsy McCaughey’s rejoinder in today’s New York Post about the difference between your current health plan, the “qualified plan” you’ll be forced to choose under ObamaCare, and the penalties you’ll pay if you prefer not to “qualify.” Should be a fun presser on Wednesday night.
Update: Looking on the bright side, at least we know now what his next bald-faced revisionist lie about his record will be. How many months or years before he treats us to this: “But let me be clear. We have never denied that health-care reform might temporarily add to our deficits.”

I can tell you mine is supposed to be a Blue Dog that votes with Pelosi all the time. He is tied up with Murtha too, aren’t I lucky? He’s a waste.
The real Blue Dogs are scared though and the Progressives think this is not socialist enough. Their constituents (the HuffPO crew) are a scary bunch. I think there are lots of scared people in the House. Ted was right though in the mean time Grassley is one to focus on.

And millions of healthy young people who choose not to pay premiums through their employers. Rope them in, make them pay and they subsidize the older and sicker – which is exactly what they are currently opting out of.

I fear Grassley is looking to be “historic”. Is his name on any of the versions of the bill, as a co-sponsor?
Fearsome legacy for a guy like Chuck – to go down in Wikipedia history as the author of the Baucus/Grassley bill.
Vanity, thy name is Chuck.
guntotinglibertarian on July 18, 2009 at 5:33 PM
Grassley’s office told me that he is NOT on board with a socialization plan. He is close w/ Baucus though and Baucus is under the gun to get something done. Heck, hit Baucus too, wear him down. I’d hate to see Grassley turn. Call Grassley and profess support for his position against such a bill.

The senator is fully behind this debacle. You just can’t fix stupid.
HornetSting on July 18, 2009 at 6:05 PM
Here’s a f***ing simple solution to that. Don’t create a government program to run health care you d***a***.
PackerBronco on July 18, 2009 at 6:05 PM
Because we own property in both Florida and Virginia I like to annoy all four senators. I have not had a reply from Sen. Webb yet, but Senators Martinez and Warner do not believe that the federal government should get involved but that rules should be changed to promote competition in the private sector. Whatever that means. Sen. Nelson buys the Obama plan hook, line and sinker. Don’t get me wrong I don’t even believe the two that say they are against it but it’s a start.
Cindy Munford on July 18, 2009 at 6:10 PM
The article about the elderly I referred to earlier at 4:26 PM was “O’s Broken Promises” by Betsy McCaughey, July 17, New York Post. It said that a lot of the money saved on the elderly would be used for “migrant workers” among others. Oh, joy, we know that means all the illegals. Now that’s just sad, isn’t it? Cut out care for the elderly to cover the illegals! I also think Congress should have to abide by the same laws they make for the rest of us.
I’m sorry that I don’t know how to link to the article – I’m technologically ignorant. I spent all this time trying to figure how to put part of my previous comment in this one and gave up.

Ohmygosh: more from the above link.
…Yes [they said they would get free health care for illegal aliens], these are my notes, Mark. They actually got up and said “Latino children need health care more than whites”. And then they would say things like “you must go out into your communities, use words like ’streamline’, use phrases like ‘all workers’ and ‘all families’,” because they said — and I quote — “If the American people find out that this bill is about giving health care to non-citizens, they will rise up against it.”
ted c on July 18, 2009 at 7:03 PM
I just sent this link to Beck.
katy on July 18, 2009 at 7:05 PM
The ‘elderly’ are not unaware that they are going to become scapegoats. More and more of them can be heard complaining about Obama, even many of those who were originally Obots. Whether this growing dis-satisfaction will be reflected in 2010 is too early to forecast, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Medical care is crucial to this age group, a number one or two issue. Add to this the large numbers of older boomers gradually cycling into Medicare and it is a very large voting segment. Not sure if O and henchmen realize this but am betting that Reps and Sens do.

jazz_piano on July 18, 2009 at 9:18 PM
I saw that post last night at Dick Morris. I will say that on Keith Hennessey’s blog he has mentioned this option before and discounted it. According to him, the type bill they could get through via reconciliation would be very watered down and incomplete.
I think Morris believes that Obama will be so panicked if this isn’t done by August he will push it through knowing he won’t get it done after the break. Maybe, but I do believe it would be a weak ineffectual change and a sign Obama is totally on the ropes.
msmveritas on July 18, 2009 at 9:19 PM

Morris is pretty astute. I’m reading Catastrophe right now and he has some pretty incredible insight into political behavior.
Clinton was remarkable about regaining his footing once he got hit in the jaw with something. He always remained maneuverable and could land on his feet. Like a cat, he had 9 lives.
Obama, however, is acting like each piece of legislation is his last. What happens when he is dealt a stunning loss?
