Obama promises: I won’t sign any health-care bill that adds to the deficit
posted at 12:55 pm on July 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
That’s how the Times is spinning it, but read the fine print. What he actually says is he won’t sign any bill that adds to our deficits over the next decade. The One knows this is a sinkhole in the long run even if it isn’t in the short run — which, per the CBO, it almost certainly is. No worries, though: “I don’t believe that government can or should run health care,” he assures us, ignoring the fact that he once famously said he doesn’t want to run the auto companies … a month after he forced the chairman of GM into early retirement. No wonder some prominent Democrats now want to, um, run the auto companies.
Oh, and he’s still lying about letting you keep your current insurance if you like it, oblivious to the reality of what’ll happen to private insurers forced to compete with a program backed by the Treasury Department’s printing presses. But then, as he candidly says here, “I … don’t think insurance companies should have free reign to do as they please.” That’s Obamanomics in a nutshell. Make sure to read Betsy McCaughey’s rejoinder in today’s New York Post about the difference between your current health plan, the “qualified plan” you’ll be forced to choose under ObamaCare, and the penalties you’ll pay if you prefer not to “qualify.” Should be a fun presser on Wednesday night.
Update: Looking on the bright side, at least we know now what his next bald-faced revisionist lie about his record will be. How many months or years before he treats us to this: “But let me be clear. We have never denied that health-care reform might temporarily add to our deficits.”

I saw some wealthy guy who was an Obama supporter being interviewed from a dock in the Hamptons on CNBC yesterday morning, and he basically said,”I disagree with his plans on the economy and the surtax, but Obama’s a smart guy he will figure out the right way so we don’t have to worry.” Total denial. Why do these people keep saying he is a smart guy? I don’t get it. He just doesn’t strike me as all that intelligent. Devious maybe, but intelligent, no.

Yes, and many poor people likely voted Republican (though probably a much smaller percentage).
But the idea isn’t to ensure permanent rule by the GOP. The goal would be a competent voting public invested in the nation’s economic well-being.
If we pass the tipping point, and more than 50% of the public aren’t even paying taxes, they’ll drive us into the ground.

You’re right to some extent, however lack of familiarity with details isn’t all age related. I suspect a larger share is due to other activities taking precedent, or resignation to the perception our political system is corrupt and regardless of voter interest levels, politicians will do whatever they wish. I’m 69 and use TV for watching sports only. I posit that the younger generation operate mostly on general ideals based on politicans promises and the seniors more on how programs will affect them individually rather than the country as a whole. Youngsters always want change and seniors always want security. Obama has managed to tap into gullibility in both groups by telling lies.

Ok, I know i’m going out on a limb here. But I think R. Heilein may have had it closest in Starship Troopers, (terribe movie, great book!)with only those in or veterans of, military service having the vote.
The logic being if you do not value enough your liberties granted to risk your mortal being, you value it not enough to decide over those that do.
Extreme granted, but he may have had a point here.

guntotinglibertarian on July 18, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Voting rights should hinge on several factors:
1) Property ownership (for the appropriate levels of government)
2) Paying a certain amount of taxes for each level of government (i.e. state taxes to for votes at the state level – state positions and referenda – federal taxes for votes at the federal level, …) (In this, it would be better to issue no vote for no taxes paid, 1 vote for the minimal percentage, 2 votes for the next percentage, … – this encourages lawmakers to flatten the tax structure and allows citizens to voluntarily pay higher rates to get an extra vote or two)
3) Passing a basic civics test for the level of government being voted on.
4) Military service (combat service) extends an automatic exemption from all above, for some length of time or for life.
Something along these lines.

Yeah, way too many do, but there is hope. At both the Tea Parties I attended many of the participants were 60+. They were quite aware of what was happening and were there to support their grandchildren. There were younger folks there, too, but not quite as many. They do understand the devil is in the details and they are not happy. Unfortunately they have never had to fight this way. They need a general and so far there isn’t one. We are woefully ignorant of how to protest. How do we stop this monstrosity? This fight needs to be fought, but how to mobilize? Obama’s cram down is the way of life these days and none of us have ever had to deal with this before.

And I would add that I would leave it to each state to decide how they want to structure the requirements for voting within their state structures. If one state wanted to have universal suffrage, then good for them. I wouldn’t step anywhere near that place, but let them compete with the other states to see which run themselves best.
The military exemption would need to be federal and apply to all states.

I’m 67 years old and this healthcare bill is depressing me. I’ve been wondering where the AARP ads are against this, and heard yesterday they are backing this bill. I read somewhere that there’s a provision in it that says the elderly has to be interviewed (reviewed) every 5 years and see what their needs are and what they will qualify for. You are obviously not worth spending much on, so they will offer you whatever pills will help your pain until you die. Needless to say, if this passes, we won’t have much to look forward to. I’ve already been so depressed since the election that I barely leave the house any more. This may do me in.
