Obama promises: I won’t sign any health-care bill that adds to the deficit
posted at 12:55 pm on July 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
That’s how the Times is spinning it, but read the fine print. What he actually says is he won’t sign any bill that adds to our deficits over the next decade. The One knows this is a sinkhole in the long run even if it isn’t in the short run — which, per the CBO, it almost certainly is. No worries, though: “I don’t believe that government can or should run health care,” he assures us, ignoring the fact that he once famously said he doesn’t want to run the auto companies … a month after he forced the chairman of GM into early retirement. No wonder some prominent Democrats now want to, um, run the auto companies.
Oh, and he’s still lying about letting you keep your current insurance if you like it, oblivious to the reality of what’ll happen to private insurers forced to compete with a program backed by the Treasury Department’s printing presses. But then, as he candidly says here, “I … don’t think insurance companies should have free reign to do as they please.” That’s Obamanomics in a nutshell. Make sure to read Betsy McCaughey’s rejoinder in today’s New York Post about the difference between your current health plan, the “qualified plan” you’ll be forced to choose under ObamaCare, and the penalties you’ll pay if you prefer not to “qualify.” Should be a fun presser on Wednesday night.
Update: Looking on the bright side, at least we know now what his next bald-faced revisionist lie about his record will be. How many months or years before he treats us to this: “But let me be clear. We have never denied that health-care reform might temporarily add to our deficits.”

Read the Bill here.
Page 16, line 10 “Limitation of New Enrollment.”
In ten years there will be NO PRIVATE PLANS LEFT since there will be no new enrollments subsequent to the signing of the Bill. How is this not a bold faced lie!!!!!
davo on July 18, 2009 at 1:41 PM
It’s not OUR care that needs reforming, unless it’s actual TORT reform and rules against baseless price gouging. The reform most wanted was to end waste, to stop the ceaseless parade of illegals from obtaining free care on the public dole, and getting the fraud out of social security/medicaid/medicare. PERIOD.
Mommypundit on July 18, 2009 at 1:41 PM
AnninCA has some deep-seated psychological issues with doctors. She’s feeling punitive, and thinks that that’s a proper aim of public policy.
Combine that with a density approaching white-dwarf levels, a lack of any real health policy knowledge beyond extrapolation from her own limited experience, a tendency to completely make stuff up, and a scorching case of argumentative ADD, and she’s not worth troubling yourself over.

If Obama truly believes what he is saying then his problems are much worse than I had initially expected. He must be convinced that the masses are mindless, blithering idiots.

Tazz 55 on July 18, 2009 at 1:43 PM
ok btt.
The easiest way to lower the COST of health care is to stop paying doctors and hospitals. When private insurance companies do this, you can sue and change companies.
When the government health insurance plan does this, the hospitals will close.
Insurance companies pay TRILLIONS of dollars in claims every year. This is the revenue that keeps hospitals open. If the government takes it over. . . expect an additional trillion dollars in payments from the government every year.
When the government doesn’t have the money, they’ll stop paying claims and hospitals will close.

Sorry, you’re wrong. The economy was the “number one issue” in the election, and the public by more than 60% believes Obama’s phony stimulus/payola to political friends package is a big fat loser. The GOP is now trusted more than the dems on the economy AND on heath care. Another massive expenditure that the public is opposed to should be easy for the GOP to oppose. You’re engaging in wishful thinking here. The vast majority of voters are quite happy with their health care. You know it. Obama knows it. The Blue Dogs know it. And the media knows it. That’s why we’re getting all these LIES.

“Hotel California”
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
‘This could be Heaven or this could be Hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say…
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
‘Please bring me my wine’
He said, ‘We haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say…
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said ‘We are all just prisoners here, of our own device’And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
‘Relax,’ said the night man,
‘We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave!’

Ann,
If you’re referring to the “general welfare” clause, I would argue that “general welfare” means that something must benefit all Americans equally.
Taking from one group to give to another (also known as redistribution of wealth) does NOT benefit all Americans equally, and therefore is NOT in the interest of our general welfare.

I consider that to be criminal negligence, and those who force it and pressure for it to be guilty of far, far worse. All involved in this, in Washington, should be in jail. If they were running private companies with these same sorts of actions they would definitely be criminally liable. That they are doing it in government is one of the boldest crimes ever perpetrated on this nation.

You’re wrong. They are changing the regulation rules of health insurance and the limitation on new enrollment is for plans with the existing rules. They get grandfathered in so you can keep the plan, but new policies will have to abide by the new rules. There will be plenty of private plans under the new rules and will be sold on a new insurance exchange. The new rules start on page 19, which if you made it to page 16 I’m sure you made it to 19.

Madison understood how the “general welfare” clause was going to be abused. He said:
Furthermore, the criminal left have even moved beyond trying to defend their insane, collectivist, un-Consitutional programs by claiming “general welfare” and have now wedded themselves to the notion that it is the federal government’s job to open a company in order to “provide competition” for the private sector, whenever the feds think it appropriate – which would give the federal government totally unlimited power. This is so blatantly un-Constitutional that it makes my head spin. The fact that the idiot left are using this as the main justification for their national health care plan is just insane.
Criminal negligence by enemies of the Constitution. That’s the Washington junta, in a nutshell, and they need to be tried for their crimes.

State Lawmakers Considering Move to Opt Out of Federal Health Care
Congress has yet to come up with a clear prescription for the nation’s health care system. But some state legislators are already urging voters not to take the medicine.
Under Arizona’s Health Care Freedom Act, which was passed by the state legislature this week, a voting initiative will be placed on the 2010 ballot that, if passed, will allow the state to opt out of any federal health care plan. Five other states — Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming — are considering similar initiatives for their 2010 ballots.

The Tenth Amendment ensures that “the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” It’s the same constitutional roadblock Franklin D. Roosevelt ran into during the Great Depression when he tried to ram through the first round of recovery programs under the New Deal. In a series of rulings, the U.S. Supreme Court found the National Recovery Act, the Agricultural Adjustment Act and several other recovery programs unconstitutional.

The reason ann that CA plans have to pay so much for administrative costs is that CA itself has half axxed state mandates forcing insurers to cover many of the ‘whacky’ things you laugh at like aromatherapy and accupuncture.
If I want to buy a no frills plan that operates out of another state I should be able to do it. THAT will bring costs down….

Obviously you only listen to MSM that has not criticized Obama for his consideration of McCain’s proposal of taxing the insurance benefits for those who are insured by their employer. That was one of the principles in McCain’s reform of health care during the campaign. The GOP did not block health care reform, they have a different approach which is based on free market principles, TORT reform and increased availability of non-emergency care.
You don’t get it because you choose not to listen to alternatives.
As to Obama’s proposal, much attention is being paid to the cost to the taxpaying American who will be subsidizing those who don’t pay tax into the money pit but I think there is one missing little piece of information that is not making it through to those who expect to be on the receiving end of this new entitlement program. It is my understanding that everybody is going to be required to have health insurance under this bill. Those who opt for the public option are going to be forced to pay some part of it where they now choose to pay none. The subsidy is based on household income and that limit is in par with the income base for paying taxes. They are not going to get this entirely free, they are going to be force to sign up and the IRS is going to know whether they did or not.
I’d like to hear more about this part of the plan if anyone has the details.

Yep. That, and the unbelievable abuse of “Equal Protection” (incorrectly and disingenuously applied to collectives whenever it suited the liberal purpose) have pushed this nation to ruin.

You quote the Constitution, as if Obama and Co. believe it’s relevant to the governance of the U.S.
