Finally: Ron Paul kinda sorta comes out as a Truther

Via LGF, which has a transcript. America’s Greatest Patriot has been playing footsie with 9/11 cranks for years, doing interviews with paranoiacs like Alex Jones, stating his support for a new investigation into the attacks, and floating related theories of his own about a war-crazed government willing to attack its own people to further the neocon agenda. The boss, playing off Colbert’s most famous coinage, describes his attitude perfectly as “Trutheriness.” Even so, as far as I know, he’s been careful never to suggest that the real truth about 9/11 is any different from the government’s version — until now. Watch this and judge for yourself, noting the pregnant pause after he’s asked, “Why don’t you come out about the truth about 9/11?” That’s a decidedly different question from asking why he won’t call for a new investigation, implying that he personally believes the “truth” is something other than what we’ve been told. And he does nothing to correct the impression.

massrighty on July 18, 2009 at 2:56 PM

The answer about the IMF made perfect sense.

But to claim he believes in Trutherism, but he’s just a little bit “too busy” to do anything about the US government mass-murdering American citizens? Of all the crazy things he’s ever said, that’s actually the craziest.

I know I made fun of all the idiots who supported Ron Paul in 2008 – and with perfectly good reason – but the REALLY crazy thing is that if things keep going the way they are we might end up with someone in the Whitehouse in 2012 who’s even more of a raving lunatic than Paul. And be damned glad to have him.

I’m disappointed to hear everyone ripping on Ron Paul. I would certainly hope in this forum that if it were McCain, Obama, or Paul, that the overwhelming support would be for Paul. He practices more fiscal conservatism than any of the other jokers we had running for president. I’d be happy with a Paul/Palin ticket.

I will say this about Ron Paul. When he was up there debating all of those Republicans, he made the most sense about the state of our economy. And I applaud his move to audit the Fed.

Now, I completely disagree with him about foreign affairs, but he had the good sense to choose Peter Schiff as his economic adviser.

That said, it’s obvious he didn’t stand a chance of winning the nomination, but he was a thorn in their sides and that was fun to watch.

yogi41 on July 18, 2009 at 3:07 PM

AP, you’re reading too much into this video. Your projecting and hoping that Paul just yells out that 911 was an inside job like that idiot AJ. Your hopes are dashed.

Libertarian Joseph on July 18, 2009 at 3:06 PM

Consider the fact that some countries have much higher gold supplies than the US. Hell South Africa would be one very rich country based on that standard.

Economies need to be based on a standard that creates growth. Gold is not a metal that has any other value rather than ostentation. Why base an entire economy on that ? Heck the silicon chip is more valuable today than gold. Oil is more valuable than gold. Gold has lost its luster a long time ago.

William Amos on July 18, 2009 at 3:10 PM

Ron Paul reminds me of Pat Buchanan. They’re right on a few issues, completely wrong on others, and have zero chance ever of holding national office.

But I loved it when Buchanan referred to Obama as ‘the avatar for abortion.’

Its a sham. Republicans could use a good dose of Ron Paul. The guy has passion and boldness when he speaks on the constitution and speaks well.
Here is where he just goes so off. This is just so sad.

JellyToast on July 18, 2009 at 3:11 PM

Paul reminds me of the mindset that prevailed among Wendell Willkie’s followers in the 1940 election against FDR. As much as I despise FDR for his domestic agenda he did have the foresight to see the Nazi threat for what it was and rejected American Isolationism that Republican’s overwhelmingly sought (of course neither one of the modern parties mirror their 1940’s namesakes).

Congressman Paul would have us stick our heads in the sand and live by the outdated world view that if we don’t bother anyone we’ll be left alone. That concept, while in a perfect world would be ideal, is far too often a major plank in the Libertarian platform and one of the major reasons last year, that after 13 years of being a declared Libertarian, I changed my registration to Republican and voted in the primary.

DFCtomm on July 18, 2009 at 3:13 PM

I sincerely hope that didn’t mean what it sounded like. He makes a lot of sense on economic stuff, but I do think he’s way off base on foreign policy. If he’s a Truther, well then, that’s just too much.

That’s actually the first time I’ve heard Ron Paul say something stupid.

It makes no sense either way. If he just wants an investigation then he should have said “I don’t know what the whole truth is but I just want a full investigation.”
If he believes 911 was an inside job than he can’t say there are too many other things on his plate – it would be top priority every day, particularly for a Congressman.

All in all I think me must have misheard her question in all the noise and thought she was just asking about why he wasn’t still pushing for an investigation and full release of the facts.

Yes, it’s a classic LGF ad hominem argument. Goes like this: Ron Paul is out of his mind with probable 9/11 trutherism, therefore, every other thing he does must be kooky too, and anyone who associates with him may be a kook – especially right wingers. Never mind that the Fed actually needs to be investigated, let’s just smear the Republican House members for agreeing with Ron Paul on that account because Paul is a kook.

Liberaltarians are incapable of getting along with ANYONE. They’re basically moonbats who’ve been cursed with a remedial understanding of arithmetic. Trying to appease the congenitally unappeaseable is political suicide.

Giving up on the Republican Party would be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It’s currently led by its ultra-left wing – and that is an abomination that would never have happened in a sane world. But limiting the options for the future to either John McCain or Ron Paul makes no more sense than any of those “false choices” Obama keeps offering us.

Partisan;

Politicians used to decide the cost of gold. It was not some divine revelation or something. In fact we had a gold standard in 1929. We had a gold standard through numerous panics in the 19th century.

Terrye on July 18, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Can everyone just finally admit that LGF has far more in common with liberal sites then conservative sites?

The mask came off a long time ago — CJ ciphers comments, controls thought, bans any dissenters, and always broad brushes those with whom he disagrees.

Exactly who’s the extremist kook here, Charles?

Btw, Ron Paul has no real influence among traditional conservatives.

Richard Romano on July 18, 2009 at 3:38 PM

So there was no growth in the 3000 or so years that gold was the standard?

So there was no growth in the US prior to 1971?

Not an endorsement here, because I’m FAR from an expert.

http://www.kitco.com/ind/fekete/jul062009.html

but interesting reading about having a standard outside of gvmnt control keeps the gvmnt from simply printing or inflating it’s way out of spending.

Partisan on July 18, 2009 at 3:36 PM

Paul doesn’t love the gold standard, it’s just a system, he hates the Fed. Gold isn’t about growth. It’s about security. You tie the dollar to a gold standard and the Fed can’t go out and print money willy nilly. Quantitative easing has already began, and if it gets out of hand then you can expect a reaction, and that reaction will be a demand for the gold standard.

DFCtomm on July 18, 2009 at 3:41 PM

every other thing he does must be kooky too, and anyone who associates with him may be a kook – especially right wingers. Never mind that the Fed actually needs to be investigated, let’s just smear the Republican House members for agreeing with Ron Paul on that account because Paul is a kook

What’s truly pathetic about that site is that he refuses to apply the same standard to himself. That he’s now being lauded by such leftist fools like Andrew Sullivan (an extremist, conspiracy-mongering nut if there ever was one) tells you all you need to know.

Fantastic.

I agree with you. I didn’t exactly want McCain as president. I voted for someone else. I voted for McCain because the prospect of Obama as president didn’t sit to well with me….it still doesn’t.

Ron Paul is anti spending is true but his “Gold Standard” nonsense is so 19th century.

I’m not a Paul backer, but your comment is just stupid. Based on that perspective, we should dump that silly old Constitution… I mean, it’s so *18th* century…

Well you do find attractive women playing magic the Gathering and D&D, although it is VERY rare. (Trust me on this.) So it is not outside the possibility that this women is part of the movement of delusion.

I’m about to eat pizza for breakfast, then I’ll have a “movement” of equal importance.

The Gold Standard is a little different than the Constitution. I’m not an economist so I can’t say if our current system is better than the gold standard, but it does make me queasy that the Fed can print as much money as it wants and therefore effect the value of the dollar. With Gold backing up our money, we couldn’t do that. It really knocked me over when I first learned that what holds up the dollar is our trust in the dollar and not any precious metal backing it up.

Rightwingguy on July 18, 2009 at 3:46 PM

As far as LGF goes. Stopped reading once the focus became Creationism and Right Wing activities in Europe. The blowup w/ Michele Malkin a few months ago revealed that Charles Johnson needs to get out of his echo chamber now and then. I hope he’s well, because his blog served an invaluable function for months/years after September 11th. Some of the greatest blogs posts I’ve ever read were on that site.

I once read through the archives before during and after September 11, you can almost see and feel the scales falling from the eyes of many liberals during those few months (including mine). As someone else said Charles is/was a liberal that is returning to form.

Can hardly blame him.

He lives in Los Angeles, would you want to go through life friendless and hated by those around you?

In the immortal words of Andrew Dice Clay, “Some people are just painfully f’ing dumb.” Obambi should make Ron Paul the new Stupidity Czar.

Percy_Peabody on July 18, 2009 at 3:47 PM

If he runs afoul of LGF, he gets my vote. I’m willing to forgive his catering to truthers, because he is the only politician who actually understands the conservative principles that built the republic.

Well I was on a college campus for the last 4 years. It was rough, but I had some conservative buddies who helped me through.

How do you think this current adminstration plans on getting out from under the mountain of debt they are building? That thing about destroying your life savings? Thats a bonus.. because now you NEED social security and would never ever vote to end it.
