Video: Sign Inhofe’s petition to keep Gitmo open

We’ve talked about this ad infinitum, and today’s story on the Jakarta terrorist attacks makes this relevant yet again. Gitmo currently houses Hambali, the military commander of Jemaah Islamiyah, whom we captured in Thailand after he helped stage two attacks in Bali that killed more than 200 people. Where would we put Hambali, who hasn’t yet been connected to an actual attack on the US (although the US alleges he was part of the Operation Bojinka plot)? Either we would have to set him free, hand him over to Indonesia or the Philippines, or put him in an American civil prison without trial rather than hold him as an unlawful combatant at war.
Keeping Gitmo open makes the most sense, as Senator James Inhofe notes:
Today, U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a Senior Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, posted on his website a petition opposing the transfers of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GITMO) to the United States. The petition is also in support of Inhofe’s amendment, S.Amdt.1559, to the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2010 (S.1390), which prohibits the transfer of detainees from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to any facility in the United States. In a YouTube video, Inhofe invited Americans to sign the petition and he promised to show the petition to his fellow Senators before they vote on this important legislation.
“By more than a 3 to 1 margin, Americans are opposed to detainees being transferred to their home states. And to date, the views of the American people have not changed,” Inhofe said. “Regardless, the administration is committed to fulfilling its political campaign promise to close GITMO, even though President Obama has yet to visit the facility for himself.
“Right now we have an opportunity to stop the President from bringing terrorists to American soil. My amendment will do just that, but I need you to weigh in. By signing this petition, you are telling the Senate and the President that it is unacceptable to house terrorists in your home states. I will make sure that my Senate Colleagues see these petitions and that they are aware of your opposition before they vote on this very important legislation.”
Go here to sign the petition. At least that will keep the US government from putting itself in the ridiculous position of bringing radical Islamist terrorists onto US soil for show trials that even the Obama administration admits have no chance whatsoever of freeing them.

Can’t get through to the link. It seems like it’s bogged down right now, which I suppose is good.

Is it too much to hope to have them put Obama in there?
elduende on July 17, 2009 at 2:26 PM
Sorry, not signing any sight that requires an e-mail address. I fully support keeping Gitmo open but I have enough unwanted e-mail and US mail from signing on to this type of petition. Why not an 800 number?

Bring ‘em over here, and warehouse them in a secure facility, where they have to listen to and watch Nancy Grace – 24/7.
I know how to break them.
OhEssYouCowboys on July 17, 2009 at 2:35 PM
I will sign but it would be awesome if he had to back track all on his own, with no encouragement from anyone. I want him to fail at closing GITMO.

I don’t think Monaco has taken any yet. I’m sure they could use some bribe money, too.

You guys are way more tech savvy than I am. I was lucky to have kids to show me how to navigate the web. I wish he would put up an 800 number for people to support his bill.

Petitions like these have worked really well so far.

Hate to say it but I want him to succeed and then have something happen on American soil as a result. The filthy liar in the White House refuses to listen to the public on anything. Let’s let him have his little moment by closing GITMO (where he has already lied since he campaigned on the idea that the terrorists would be on planes home by the time inaguration day was over). Then the American public can see what arrogance and incompetence they wreaked on the US by electing this rat bastard traitor.

I did.

Nancy Grace= Enhanced interrogation techniques.
The View= Abu Grahib-style torture techniques.
highhopes on July 17, 2009 at 2:47 PM
Keep them at Gitmo, but send me one a week so I can run my own interrogation. I am fully prepared with an acetylene torch, rubber tubing, chain saw, various sizes of pliers, nail guns, etc. The Hostel movies have nothing on me…….
adamsmith on July 17, 2009 at 2:47 PM
Not me. I can’t wish an attack on my country, and more importantly, I don’t want to give him an excuse to seize more power.
If you think people are whining about criticism being unpatriotic now, imagine how bad it would be if we were attacked.

Okay our ISP gives us 10 e-mail accounts so after I create the account and sign the petition do I cancel the account or does it keep getting e-mails? Thanks in advance.
fourdeucer on July 17, 2009 at 2:48 PM
They would plead for your “torture,” after having been subjected to mine. They would relish it, after my Nancy Grace terror.
OhEssYouCowboys on July 17, 2009 at 2:49 PM
I wouldn’t use one of those. Just sign up for a hotmail, yahoo, or google email account. Use it once, then forget it.

The simple solution to the detainee terrorists would be to lead them over the cliffs on the ocean side then shoot them for trying to escape.

Can someone explain to me why we can’t try these terrorist detainees in military court at Gitmo and sentence them appropriately?
Indefinite detention without trial seems like unnecessary bad PR to me. Give them counsel, give them a trial, and if convicted, either sentence them to hard time or string them up.

I’m disappointed not to see the signature of self-proclaimed “fiscally responsible” Rep.Harry Mitchell D-AZ (preceded by J.D.Hayworth).
I’m equally disappointed to see Giffords representing Tucson having taken a paltry $2K bribe to defy science and proclaim the world flat with Gore.

What is it with this idiotic notion that bringing them to ‘American soil’ will somehow make us unsafe? Its pure kak. Put them in a maximum security prison and forget about them. They do need to be tried and found guilty, however. They need to get on with the military tribunals or something. Holding people without charge for years on end is unAmerican and we can do better.

Agreed that we should try them. But I don’t want them in the US prison system spreading their religious ideology.
And do we have room in the prison system? Around here, you can steal a car and not do serious time because there’s no room.

It’s a legitimate address we can all use for such occasions. I hereby declare it available for public use (until someone figures out the easy answer to the secret password reset question and changes it)

The Senator’s point about these 17 proposed locations becoming a magnet for terrorists is exactly right. Why everyone focuses on the “escape” factor instead I don’t know.

jazz_piano on July 17, 2009 at 2:57 PM
At the drop of a hat? Keeping terrorists in prison is the only sane thing, and GITMO is the most secure and perfectly designed sanitized arena for these terrorists to remain segregated from the world. It’s established, they do not fall into the Geneva Convention umbrella.
The entire issue of prosecution requires evidence that the defense would argue access to, revealing sensitive material weakening national security. True enough, Gitmo is the best place for the trials should they be pursued, and they should be military tribunals, not civil. But Obama calling the shots, given what should be and what is, here we are.
maverick muse on July 17, 2009 at 3:13 PM
I signed it, I concur with the Senator’s sentiments on the issue entirely.
Cr4sh Dummy on July 17, 2009 at 3:14 PM
Yes, magnets for terrorists AND fertile grounds for conversion to militant Islam stateside, cultivating domestic terrorists.
Given our lax open borders, not only our prisons but our ways and means of transportation would come under attack all the more.
maverick muse on July 17, 2009 at 3:17 PM
I agree with the sentiment but that means some American’s who didn’t vote for this loser will be injured or killed. I am quite willing to move from rhetoric to armed action if necessary. But if I have to take up arms it will be my life I am willing to risk.

I’m in. Inhofe is one of the few Senators I send money to when he’s campaigning. If every Senator was like Inhofe we’d have our country back.
Christian Conservative on July 17, 2009 at 4:11 PM
Are you guaranteeing a 100% conviction rate? How? If they are being held on American soil while on trial and they are found not guilty – where do you release them?
At Gitmo there is a wonderful ocean and a whole bunch of troops guaranteeing their incarceration.
Prisons are known for riots and breakouts and we have a bunch of Muslims here in the states who may want to try and break them out (see conference going on in Chicago suburb this weekend for proof ) and then their is the whole “this place is inhumane” and foreign governments saying “you can’t treat our citizens that way, but we don’t want them” lawsuits that will go before some crazy judge who listens to these assanine arguments and let’s them go.
And then on top of that there are vital secrets to protect which in trial we may be forced to disclose because they will use our disclosure laws against us. Read Andrew McCarthy’s book “Willful Blindness” and open your mind to the problems we will face if we do bring them here.
Signed it.

You have the right mindset, but you are not looking through the right glasses.
All that would do is cause another ‘emergency’ for this crew of arrogant commies to push through more wrongly named legislation (Employee Free Choice Act – exactly the opposite, Troubled Asset Relief Program – lol, and finally the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – ROTFLMAO!!!). Remember, we are living in bizzaro world now!

We all need to sign up and sign in … my reps both Congressional and Senatorial are gettin’ to know my name.
Here in Oregon, these Libtards are goin’ to send me to one of their re-educational training camps. Come and get me.

Good heavens, fourdeucer, or anyone else who has a problem with spam email and won’t sign petitions because of it — go open a yahoo or hotmail account to handle all those places where you sign things online. That way you won’t have a problem with your regular email, and everything will go to the online account, which you can mass empty any time you want. It’s that simple. I signed, used my hotmail account, and will sign, just about anything Jim Inhofe recommends. You go, Jim — your loyal constituent!
