Quote of the day

posted at 10:00 pm on July 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Palin is controversial, in part, because America is divided over disability. We’ve established laws and institutions that protect people with disabilities. But we also do everything we can to make sure they don’t see the light of day.

Trig is a reminder of our fierce ambivalence over disability. Every mention of his name is a pinprick to our conscience. Every photo of mother and son is a reminder of concepts — vulnerability, dependency and suffering — our culture no longer tolerates, as well as virtues, such as humility, dignity and self-sacrifice, it no longer extols.

Trig is also a reminder of an inescapable truth: Disability is an inherent part of the human condition. At a time of deep cultural divisions, 1-year-old Trig Palin represents the deepest division of all, between a culture that increasingly sees genetic perfection as an entitlement and a culture still rooted in the belief that human beings are defined not by their capabilities but, instead, by the very fact of their humanity.”

No. Not one of us can consistently live up to that Standard. Praise God for His Perfect Gift of Righteousness through Jesus Christ our Lord.

davidk on July 18, 2009 at 6:46 AM

The point there is that Christ IS love and through Christ, one can do all things through him, through faith.

The point of that ideal is that it’s God’s ideal, Word became Man, Jesus, His only Son, who is Love, God among us, Emannuel.

So of course no human being in this world can live up to “that standard” but we are asked to do miracles IN HIS NAME, the power being God, Christ, not us.

You are making a very common mistake. Allah always takes quotes out the story to encourage interest and then does blue highlights for the readers to click on which are links to the original story. Normally he is ridiculed for “writing” the story as many people don’t appear to get the fact that the Quote of the Day must come from another piece. Plenty of reasons to get annoyed with Allah but you complaint is not one of them.

I don’t get this one at all. The disability of Trig has never been a discussion that I’ve seen nor a part of the anti-Palin sentiment from the left.

They can’t stand her politics but prefer, usually, to lampoon her for being stupid/redneck/Barbie/etc.

The internet being the charming place that it is, a couple of obscure lefty bloggers wrote demeaning posts about children with disabilities. Apparently, those few bloggers speak for everybody who has an unfavorable opinion of Sarah Palin (a little less than half the country).

AnninCA on July 18, 2009 at 10:15 AM

Ann;
It’s been there. Lots of stuff at the lefty websites. Governor Palin is constantly accused of using her son as a “campaign prop,” for example.

What about real hate, from the party that thinks they’re the tolerant ones?

It may not be at the water cooler at work, but it’s there where annonymity can sheild those that hate.

RightOFLeft on July 18, 2009 at 10:49 AM

Not sure what your meaning is, here. First, I’d say it’s more than a “couple” of “obscure” lefty bloggers. There are threads, comments, even contests! that demean both Trig and Governor Palin. If you read the article that this QOTD is linked to, you find one of the core reasons; Trig’s presence is a rebuke to the extremist view that abortion can be a “more moral” choice than carrying a child to term.

As for the idea that “a little less than half the country” have an unfavorable opinion of Sarah Palin, that may be true, right now. Consider this, though;

A lot of those opinions may come from the lies, distortions, smears, and the constant drumbeat of anti-Palin comment from the media. No VP candidate has ever been so thoroughly investigated, or so roundly attacked. Which leads to persceptions formed by bad information.

Tom Peters, who co-wrote “In Search of Excellence,” says this throughout his work:

“Perception is all there is. There is only one perceived reality, the way each of us chooses to perceive a communication, the value of a service, the value of a particular product feature, the quality of a product.”

Apply this to Governor Palin. Who knows how her fav/un-fav numbers will look when some truth has pushed out the bad information thats out there?

massrighty on July 18, 2009 at 11:05 AM

As someone who has “borderline” Autism, to me it has become more important than ever to stop forced vaccines on our country. Did you know that there is Thimerosal in them? That component along with Mercury has been linked to Autism. But there is more than that..

Formaldahyde
Sucrose (sugar)
Egg protein
Polysorbate 80
and even detergent!

Read more here before you or your children are thinking about vaccines.

My point is, eugenicists and their friends in the media are attacking Palin b/c of Trig and his Down’s Syndrome…and these one-world NWO types aren’t fans of the disabled. I guess some of you heard about that eugenicist Ruth Bader Ginsburg!

Cindy Munford on July 18, 2009 at 11:08 AM

I will ignore them, and I think you should, too. They’re not evidence of great cultural divide over the worth and dignity of the mentally handicapped. They’re mostly kids who get off on being able to break taboos without any consequences. It’s not a fair representation of Palin’s opponents. It’s especially not a fair representation of America.

At some point conservatives and liberals have to step back and take stock of their common values. We have a lot to be proud of with respect to how we treat the disabled in our country, and I think it would be a tragedy to disregard that just to score a cheap political point.

That’s the problem with quote of the day. Allah doesn’t make it clear who said it or why he thinks it’s quote worthy. Also he does not use quote marks properly. Quote marks go at the beginning of each quoted paragraph (but not the end of the paragraphs except the last one).

As a whole I agree with you, my father was disabled and never even took advantage of all the opportunities that were available to him as the increased over the years. But I wish I could believe it was out of compassion instead of fear of law suits. I am watching in awe as our government tries to divine a health care system that appears to encourage the early demise of seniors and disabled as a cost saving strategy and since I am fast approaching the senior designation I am getting a tad sensitive and less trusting in what the population really believes.

I’m with Cindy on this one.
QOTD is an invitation. We should all click on the link to the relevant source material, read the underlying stuff, to get the full context of the quote, then comment.

As to the “who said it” aspect; it’s fun to try and figure it out, before clicking on the link.

Those who don’t, and comment without reading, should be gently corrected once.

Failure to do so, after a reminder, identifies one who doesn’t do the work as one who, well, doesn’t do the work.

Caught your posts on this thread last night. My son has Aspergers. Falls into the “techy” model very well except has no interest in math. As such, math has been a struggle for him. All of his Apspergers focus (which we see as a gift, really) has taken him to a great grasp of history, and a love of writing.

It’s such a broad spectrum, and has so many facets.

Good for your parents, by the way, and God bless them for refusing to shuffle you away. (In fact, God blessed them with you, and they were wise enough to understand this.)

In my son’s case, we had to push back when some helpful souls recommended medication (useless for Aspergers) and even attempted to diagnose him as Schizophrenic.

annoyinglittletwerp on July 18, 2009 at 11:19 AM

I think it is often a combination, ie: more than one factor at work. I believe that some children are genetically predisposed toward autism, & I also believe that vaccines can have a different & harmful effect on the brain chemistry of those particular children.

It is a fascinating disorder for sure, we may never really understand it in our lifetime. But I do agree with what massrighty said, it can also come with amazing gifts. My son is proof of that!

There might be an individual allergic reaction as with any drug but the mercury argument is total bs since it was taken out the vaccines quite a while ago and the instances of autism appear to be rising. The increase may be more of the ability to recognize it but it seems a bit to much for that to be the case.

Cindy Munford on July 18, 2009 at 12:27 PM

Thanks for your comments, there is a reason I didn’t specifically say it was thimiseral that would cause such a reaction, my point is that some children can be genetically predisposed & then exposure to another event or factor (and there are potentially too many to list) could cause autism because their brain chemistry is different. I’m certainly not interested in arguing the immunization angle, that is pretty much a moot point around here. :)

kg598301 on July 18, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Cindy Munford on July 18, 2009 at 12:27 PM

I think that the increase in Autism Spectrum diagnoses (including Aspergers) is probably a cumulative result – kind of an all-of-the-above deal.
Food allergies
Med reactions (including, but not limited to, vaccines)
Increased recognition
Over-convenient diagnoses (rare, but remember how everybody had ADD/ADHD for a while?)

And, there are probably many more triggers that we don’t understand.

massrighty on July 18, 2009 at 12:43 PM

I think that Todd and Sarah Palin make the Hatefilled Left, especially liberal angry, venomous women, scream and pull their hair out becuase over the last 30 years they have managed to make abortion “mainstream” and “okay” then Todd and Sarah show up on stage with the ultimate child they thought they could justify killing and the child is precious and so obviously loved and well taken care of and their whole canard comes crashing down. The Left is startig to see who the enemy is…it is them…

God bless Todd and Sarah Palin for the example they set and the values they live. I’m praying for them everyday.

CCRWM on July 18, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Another hypothesis about autism’s increase is that it appears to increase somewhat proportional to the increase in using immunizations that, to save money, they combined 3 shots into one making it more potent. The theory is that for some kids it overwhelmed their system, they had a very bad reaction, and autism like symptoms are the result.

I have only had limited experience with the disease or disability, not quite sure what to consider it. This is going to sound crazy but I became fascinated with it when I saw some photographs done by an autistic artist. I really really loved the artist’s vision of ordinary things but it made me wonder the depth of the “distortion” of things that they see and hear. Considering the prevalence it is probably safe to say that we aren’t doing as much as we could but then with so many avenues to explore maybe I am being too harsh.

She is controversal because she came along right when we needed a strong contrast of Americanism -v- Socialism. Not just Odumbsh*t, but all over the place. She is like a candle in the darkness; hence she needs to be extinguished.

Nonsense.

Palin became controversial the second the liberal base heard she was an evangelical Christian. Period, end of story.

They hated her from that moment forward for all the same reasons they hated George Bush. Indeed, she WAS the female George Bush. She was a white, female, Clarence Thomas. She’s a woman!
