Quote of the day

“Palin is controversial, in part, because America is divided over disability. We’ve established laws and institutions that protect people with disabilities. But we also do everything we can to make sure they don’t see the light of day.
Trig is a reminder of our fierce ambivalence over disability. Every mention of his name is a pinprick to our conscience. Every photo of mother and son is a reminder of concepts — vulnerability, dependency and suffering — our culture no longer tolerates, as well as virtues, such as humility, dignity and self-sacrifice, it no longer extols.
Trig is also a reminder of an inescapable truth: Disability is an inherent part of the human condition. At a time of deep cultural divisions, 1-year-old Trig Palin represents the deepest division of all, between a culture that increasingly sees genetic perfection as an entitlement and a culture still rooted in the belief that human beings are defined not by their capabilities but, instead, by the very fact of their humanity.”

Meh. Nothing important. Street protests. Zelaya threatening violence. Running through the jungle to sneak back into the country. You know, un-newsworthy stuff. Why would Hotair want to slam the moron Dems in Washington for their full-throated support of Zelaya’s coup, especially after Hotair called it wrong day after day, finally … grudgingly … getting around to mentioning that Zelaya tried to perpetrate a coup in one headline title?
It’s Palin all day, every day around here – frm every possible angle. I think AP is taking the UN and its obssession with resolutions about Israel as the model.

There are almost 50 million Americans with some level of disability in the US. Sarah was soeaking to every American listening who has, or knows of someone who works through life with some kind of disability. Sarah knows it first hand and it is not an easy way.
Trig was there with her on stage. She was so proud of him. Why would she not send that message out to everyone who shares her struggles and joys with Trig?
Especially in light of our culture and how people with these condidions are thought of or treated.
Sarah did not come off to me as exploiting. She came off as sincerely introducing America to perhaps the first Downs Syndrome political public figure in history. And she wanted us to feel as comfortable as she was with him.
katy on July 17, 2009 at 11:04 PM
You have to know of the Black antagonism toward Jews to really understand why the black gentleman responded in the way that he did. Nobody likes to talk about it but its there.
I had the privilege of growing up with a cousin that had Down’s, she was nothing but a love machine. I’m amazed at the criticism that Palin received from the left over this issue. There is no issue, it’s simply the choice of life.
You know, it’s weird to watch the criticism. I could not fathom not having lived with my cousin, you wanna talk about unconditional love. They are the best.

Fortunately for those who want to stay sober, I have an alternative.
Chaz706 on July 17, 2009 at 11:10 PM
I don’t know what you’re talking about. Black antipathy towards Jews, in general, is no secret. It was all quite out in the open when blacks kicked the Jews out of the civil rights orgs, when black nationalism really took hold, and as Rev Wright and others constantly spout their bile is always around. The Hymietown remark by Jackson was not an isolated instance of anything.
I think Alford’s response had nothing to do with Boxer being a Jew, but just his righteous indignation at being treated as nothing but the faceless representative of a group – which is what the collectivists are all about. The baby talk from Boxer was especially infuriating, but I’ve seen her act like that to many. It’s just her level of discussion.
progressoverpeace on July 17, 2009 at 11:10 PM
I think there is an antagonism between a white liberal of any religion or either sex and a powerful black who might not be sharing their liberal mindset – that indeed, they are an ignorant “representative of their race” which is why she had to do exactly what Boxer did.

Two quick points;
1. From the linked article, from which the QOTD is taken, this quote; “Nicholas Provenzo of the libertarian Center for the Advancement of Capitalism discussed being “troubled” by Trig’s existence because “it is crucial to reaffirm the morality of aborting a fetus diagnosed with Down syndrome.”
Wow.
This quote makes it sound like abortion is the only choice – best choice – most moral choice.
Again, wow!
2. Sarah Palin chose to keep her child.
Heads up libs; I thought a woman had the right to choose?
I guess you only mean it when it’s the choice you would have made.
This is the very literal definition of hypocracy.

The reason Sarah is being savaged is because she is the furthest thing from a politician. She’s in politics, yes, but her instincts are not ruthless from what I have seen. She’s tough, but tough in no way means ruthless.
In my mind, Sarah is first and foremost a mother. A mother who is in politics. I think that’s why she’s hated. And completely misunderstood and underestimated.

The article above is why I no longer read Politico.
When my children were toddlers, we happened upon a mentally-handicap teenager (at the grocery) who was making loud noises and jerky movements. My children were wide-eyed and very afraid so I approached the teenagers mother and politely asked if my children could ask her some questions so they wouldn’t be apt to stare or snicker at future meetings with mentally-handicap people.
My children asked the typical questions toddlers would ask; “does it hurt”, “is he happy”, “does he play outside”. To my surprize, the mother gave me a hug and thanked me for taking time to teach my children that “we are all loved, and we are all unique”. I’ve never forgotten her and her BEAUTIFUL son!
For years, my children and I talked about how some of us are tall, short, black, white, blonde, thin, stout, etc. How each of us are unique with strenghts and weaknessess, and that snickering at someone who is ‘different’ is like snickering at ourselves.
Love one another!

So many of our issues

Others would have simply discarded of Bradley because they believe there is not more to “life” than themselves.

Hijack in progress:
CONGRESS RIPS PAULSON’S $700B BAILOUT PLAN
http://www.nypost.com/seven/07172009/business/paulsons_ripped_179665.htm
By PAUL THARP
HOT SEAT: Henry Paulson testifies before Congress yesterday in Washington, DC.
Posted: 1:00 am
July 17, 2009
Hank Paulson got a taste of Congress’ own version of the bait-and-switch.
The former Treasury secretary appeared yesterday on the hot seat before lawmakers, expecting to defend his controversial strong-arming of Bank of America chief Ken Lewis into a shotgun marriage with ailing Merrill Lynch.
Instead, almost every lawmaker took the opportunity to roll back the clock to a year ago and blast Paulson’s entire $700 billion bailout effort, which many panelists branded as a deception and ultimate bait-and-switch ruse.
“It was masterful deceit,” said Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), taking her turn hammering Paulson for his initial pleas to Congress a year ago for $700 billion specifically to buy toxic assets.
However, the billions went to prop up banks and financial firms, which one lawmaker said was Paulson’s payoff to his Wall Street “pals.”
“You misled Congress,” said Rep. Stephen Lynch (D- Mass.). “You told us [at the time] a bank injection of cash wouldn’t work.”
Paulson, he said, concealed his ultimate motive: “‘I want to give $700 billion to my pals.’”
Despite the agenda of just one issue, Bank of America, lawmakers kept up their attacks on Paulson’s entire rescue effort.
“You came and asked us, and not very tactfully, for a blank check,” said Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.). “Clearly, you misled us because if we had known you were going to use the money for something else, we would never have approved it.”
Paulson denied making a misleading switch, saying, “I had to change gears — the financial system was collapsing all around us.”
He said Congress technically allowed such flexibility in its boilerplate language of the bailout bill.
“You’re a very smart man, but I don’t think anyone’s buying what you’re saying,” said Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.).
The head of the House oversight panel inquiry said all lawmakers were outraged that major rescue steps were made in secret.
“All of this was decided behind closed doors, with no oversight,” said Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY).
“When you turn over complete authority to the Treasury Department or the Fed, with no accountability and no checks and balances, this is what you get: Oral commitments involving billions of dollars, seemingly arbitrary decision-making and residual suspicion.”

I saw clips of that. Sec. Paulson’s face was red, literally red. Congress has no one to blame but themselves. No one know how the systems works (or doesn’t work)better then they. To be whining that they were tricked doesn’t pass the straight face test. Oversight could have been written in. As usual full fledged abdication of the constitutional duties.
