Quote of the day

posted at 10:00 pm on July 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Palin is controversial, in part, because America is divided over disability. We’ve established laws and institutions that protect people with disabilities. But we also do everything we can to make sure they don’t see the light of day.

Trig is a reminder of our fierce ambivalence over disability. Every mention of his name is a pinprick to our conscience. Every photo of mother and son is a reminder of concepts — vulnerability, dependency and suffering — our culture no longer tolerates, as well as virtues, such as humility, dignity and self-sacrifice, it no longer extols.

Trig is also a reminder of an inescapable truth: Disability is an inherent part of the human condition. At a time of deep cultural divisions, 1-year-old Trig Palin represents the deepest division of all, between a culture that increasingly sees genetic perfection as an entitlement and a culture still rooted in the belief that human beings are defined not by their capabilities but, instead, by the very fact of their humanity.”

Let people know:
Every person below the poverty line or unemployed is Obama’s fault

700 billion could have raised every person above the poverty line by employing them.

Even Down Syndrome People could have been employed

This is total crap. Must be a very slow news day.

The only person I know who agonizes over disability is Justice Ginsburg, who assumed that Roe v Wade was about disposing of the inconvenient little creatures.

guntotinglibertarian on July 17, 2009 at 10:08 PM

This tells us more about the hateful people who smear Palin every chance they get.

It isn’t Palin’s fault that chose to have an abortion, That’s on them.

suzyk on July 17, 2009 at 10:14 PM

Three reasons the Dems are up in arms:

The baby wasn’t aborted

Governor Palin shows a wonderful, strong and altruistic character.

Here (the baby) is a truly needy person that does not fit the ‘official’ list of victims and the troubles of discrimation, poverty and a poor education. And I almost forgot the continuing effect of slavery nearly a century and a half ago. Notice that Brad and Madonna adopted only healthy kids.

But back to the Palin bashing…

notagool on July 17, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Disability is not the issue. Trig is so small that any disability is not even noticeable, in any way. I didn’t read the rest of the article, but the hate for Palin, from the left, has nothing to do with disabilities. It is more about the violently rabid pro-abortion people (the ones want to force everyone to have abortions, to make themselves feel a little less monstrous) and Palin’s anti-abortion stance and refusal to abort Trig. But they couldn’t really care less about Trig, his state, or anything else.

Now, as to those on the right who get all bent out of shape about Palin … that’s a whole other story.

progressoverpeace on July 17, 2009 at 10:15 PM

I said this earlier topday. Palin showed me her core beliefs when she chose to keep Trig instead of aborting him like most selfish despicable scumbags do.

Or is it only O.K. to kill a cop when you’re part of a minority group? And does having DS count as being part of a minority group? Hmmm, this is confusing. Could one of my liberal betters explain the rules to me please?

America is divided over disability..
————————————-

There is Two America’s!

The first,is the love of your child, and for a loving mother
like Sarah Palin,its a gift from God,and not a ‘mistake’,nor
a ‘burden’!

The real Caring and Compassion is lived day in and day out by the RIGHT,and in that,a baby has some form of basic Human
Rights!
———————————————————
The Second America!

The Liberal Party claims to be on the side of the little guy,who needs a group,to be formed,so that they have some
body that will speak for them!

However, the Left, uses and abuses said groups, for the single
purpose of using said group, strictly for their vote, only to
pay nothing but lip service, witness Obama tossing the Gay
Rights Groups under the bus,ala replay of Clinton!!

Obama has stated that baby’s don’t have ‘Human Rights’,and
the Liberal Party,would like to odopt,Germanys vision,of
the disabled, and any other imperfection of the human form!!

I don’t think they hate her because she actually had the child. I think they hate seeing her with the child, and deep down they question whether they would have the strength to choose to have had Trig. The liberal meme for years was to abort such children for the child & families sake. The Palin Paradigm shatters all of this. It makes them uncomfortable therefore they attack them.

She is obviously there to put things in front of Boxer to use and I would bet gave her everything to “enter into the record” after this man’s speech. She has a smirk on her face you want to slap off and after this gentleman starts his rebuttal she clearly is in a panic and that smirk is gone and she is jumping up and down and whispering into Boxer’s ear.

between a culture that increasingly sees genetic perfection as an entitlement and a culture still rooted in the belief that human beings are defined not by their capabilities but, instead, by the very fact of their humanity.

While the description of the “conservative” side was a bit self serving, I for one see this as a pretty fair assessment of a very real dichotomy. One that puts me squarely opposite most here. However, there are many die hard liberals and democrats who really dont think in those terms, that never understand government well enough to realize they tend to enable some out there stuff. Either way, im willing to admit i do tend to view things like an end to genetic disorders as something society should provide. Its the whole hard future thing, gotta be securing our long long long term future in space…when you begin to grasp what changes in society would be necessary to actually do any of that stuff, things like gene therapy are quaint.

Watchin’ yer back, Buddah, because my wife and I had the same feeling. It just seemed…opportunistic.

And we’re both tired of folks…and I’m not saying Sarah is one of them, necessarily…who only come to Jesus on some issue when tragedy affects them personally. Then they rush around lobbying for some law named after their loved one.

Most egregious recent example: the mom whose toddler slipped out of her (unlatched) doggie door and drowned in her (unfenced) swimming pool.

Now she’s running around banging the drum for laws to regulate doggy doors (and suing the manufacturer of her own doggy door)

Sounding more and more like a Peoples’ Paradise…the perfect fascist world.

Go to P’yongyang. Won’t see a handicapped person anywhere, in a population of nearly 4 million.

Why?

People with physical handicaps (other than war veterans) are considered far less than human, a blight on the perfection of the Kim Empire. Abortion is common, infanticide is prevalent, and those who are not killed in vivo or immediately after birth are sent out the the farthest reaches of the country to slowly die, mostly shunned by even the poorest of the peasants.

Our President having no qualms about a baby left to die in a hospital storeroom or worried about one of his daughters having to live with a “mistake” has already shown us clearly which side of “perfection” he stands. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D.-Md.) slipped an amendment into the Senate health care bill currently being legislated that would allow the Obama Administraion to mandate that insurance companies cover abortion and taxpayers pay for it.

This seems to be the Utopia that the Left embraces…perfection or nothing at all.

Whose perfection?

They can try to disguise it under “choice,” but it is in reality “cleansing” no better than that horror which was visited on Bosnia in our collective forgotten long long ago times.

She was expressing the idea that she would be a mouth piece, a support, a champion of women who deal with the issues that arise from caring for a DS child.

Fine, as far as it goes. But I’m not sure a GOP convention is the time and place. My wife and I looked at each other and started calculating, “How many votes did she hope to snare with that?”

Mind you, we had just contributed the maximum to McCain/Palin and were thrilled to have her on the ticket. But it seemed so…needlessly opportunistic.

I can’t help if you are a racist, too.

Exactly when would it have appropriate for Governor Palin to express her pledge of advocacy? You have a different set of standards for Palin.

bloggless on July 17, 2009 at 10:52 PM

Sadly a predictable QOT. A disabled child is a political football now. The 14 year old is no longer out of bounds, so go for the 1 year old?

Is there no decency left?

Hog Wild on July 17, 2009 at 10:44 PM

You didn’t read the article yet have you? Hit the link an read it and then respond accordingly. The author is not picking on trig.

Americannodash on July 17, 2009 at 10:53 PM

If Trig had never been born, Lefties would hate Palin just as much as they do now.

I wasn’t “flaming” anyone. I calls it as I sees it.

bloggless on July 17, 2009 at 10:53 PM

It simply astounds me that every time I even look slightly at the “Progressive” blueprint for society, I see EXACTLY the same utopia envisioned by such kindly gentlemen with names like Goering, Himmler, Goebbels, and Hitler.

Kill the old and the disabled by rationing health care to preserve resources, wipe out the genetically impure or the merely inconvenient in the womb, use the law and the media to silence opposition, create a government and corporate alliance that controls and directs every aspect of life and sustenance all under the yoke of an “enlightened” superior elite, with every person forced into “organizations” and “unions” for their own good.

Our country is becoming a rerun of the 1930’s (and not the Roosevelt version, either). All we need is for some incident to replicate the Reichstag fire so they can dispense with the Constitution and we are done.

Knucklehead on July 17, 2009 at 10:54 PM

I have a little story about this…..
I worked with a woman, she was a good friend, many years ago, that wanted a third child. She was in good physical health, she wasn’t pushing the envelope in age, and when she found out she was pregnant, she was overjoyed. In the third month, there was a problem detected with the baby, and an amnio was done. It showed that the baby was most likely going to have Down’s syndrome and my friend was at a crossroads. I sat down with her and being very young, 21, at the time, I asked her what she was going to do. Even at that age, I understood the sanctity of life. I knew it would not be an easy decision for my friend. Most people would have just decided to end the pregnancy and go on with their lives, but my friend so wanted, prayed so hard for this baby, that she could not let her go. She did not want to kill her baby. She decided to keep the baby and was in her fifth month when she miscarried. She was devastated, they named the baby and had a quiet burial for the child. A few weeks later, she returned to work and I asked her how she was doing. She was at peace, knowing that the decision that she made was the right decision and it was God that made the final decision.
Those that are so shallow, so worried about appearances over the sake of child, may want to think twice about bringing a child into the world. I don’t think they deserve it.
