GOP “insiders”: Palin will be a campaign asset next year
posted at 6:10 pm on July 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
The sentence I never thought I’d write: Republican chieftains have a fee-vah and the only prescription is more Sarahcuda!
A solid majority of Democratic Insiders said Palin would be more of a liability [59/38], while a smaller majority of Republicans [53/42] thought she would be an asset.
The GOP responses were probably the most intriguing because they reflect two ongoing debates with in the party. One, of course, is over Palin herself and her future in the party; many Republicans see her as a force, others almost hold her in contempt. The other argument focuses on whether Republicans are more likely to win elections by turning out the base or attracting independents and even a few disgruntled Democrats. Palin, who is practically a rock star to the party base but remains a polarizing figure for many non-Republicans, seems to embody that discussion. Still, she remains one of the most intriguing politicians of the day.
As one GOP insider put it: “Just like the movie with Cameron Diaz, there’s just something about Sarah. Don’t ask me to explain it, though.”
For spice, scroll down and read the “insider” quotes collected at National Journal as part of the survey. Sample: “Is Sarah Palin really the face we want to project to the American people? Jeez, where do we find these people?” Patrick Ishmael made the case a few days ago for unleashing her as a force in the congressional races and I honestly can’t see how anyone would disagree. Sure, her negatives are high, but are they so high that an independent in a red or purplish district who can’t decide how to vote is going to swing Democratic just because she shows up for a fundraiser? It’s more likely that Republicans who’d otherwise stay home or ignore the congressional race altogether will light up when she comes to town. That is to say, what makes Palin a potentially weak presidential nominee doesn’t really come into play in targeted congressional campaigning: Because she’s not a candidate herself, her perceived shakiness on national policy won’t matter, and since she can be deployed to rural districts that appreciate her strengths, there’s less worry of her alienating urban undecideds. All she needs to deliver is charisma and the imprimatur of “true conservatism” and she could do that in her sleep. Which I guess explains how the same “insiders” who ranked her seventh as a potential nominee a few months ago could be gung ho to have her out on the trail in House and Senate races next year.
In the meantime, she’s promising to debut a new Twitter feed soon — one that’s decidedly “less politically correct” than the one she runs now. What could go wrong?

Terrific. And no, she’s not an asset if she drives more voters to the left than she draws to the right, as Democrats (mistakenly) believe she will.

sammypants on July 17, 2009 at 6:20 PM
The “Insiders” just said “uh oh.” If Palin sits out 2010 and 2012 Republicans can kiss off retaking Congress or the White House. And the insiders know it. Even if she doesn’t run for anything, if she doesn’t endorse and or campaign for the 2012 Republican nominee, he, she or it won’t win. And the 2010 mid-terms elections may pivot around her also. She can make or break many congressional elections in 2010.
And what if she campaigns for a conservative Dem, as she said she might do?
So, Parker, Noonan, Bennett, Gingrich, welcome to politics. Real smart, savvy, experienced insiders. Yeah, right. This ain’t bean bag. Do you want to win, or do you want an Ivy League candidate?
The 11th Commandment. Too late to obey it now. The damage is done.

To think that Sarah Palin would not be an asset for the GOP ruuning up to the 2010 midterms would be akin to the 30 NFL teams (other than the Indianapolis Colts and the NE Patriots)saying that the acquisition of Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would not have a dramatic effect on the offensive performance of their team and have a huge effect on the regular season record.

As a side note, these “insiders” need to make up their minds. One week she’s an abomination, the next-she’s a gravy train.

As far as AP’s “exit question”-I really hope she doesn’t go flying off the handle and “tweeting” things that could come back to haunt her (or make her appear petty and bitter). But well, as stated before-I trust she knows what she’s doing. *Shrugs* The more important question is…will she set up a Twitter where we can send her direct messages?

LankyLou on July 17, 2009 at 6:51 PM
I live in the South, and am a better shot than my Dad. After Fred dropped out, I campaigned for Mitt. Quite frankly, I am more than fed up with people saying Mitt is not liked in the South, or that we would not support him. The conditions this next go round will prove to be vastly different than the past primary. It is my prayer we close the primaries, and that Huckahu Akbahr quietly plays himself into Fox oblivion. Now there is someone we in the South are not fond of!
That being said, Mitt is not my top choice at this juncture. I do not have a top choice at this stage because I am too busy trying to stop Death Star Care, Crap & Tax, and gearing up for Amnesty.

Except unlike Sarah Palin, Ron Paul never bailed out of an elected office job because he couldn’t handle all the ethics violations investigations.

LOTS OF SIZZLE, LOTS OF FUNDRAISING, AN ARMY OF DEVOTED ROBOTS, BUT FEW ACTUAL VOTES IN THE END.
Why do think the sizzle, fundraising and the devotion of volunteers will be unfocused and without purpose which is to take down the Democrats in 2012.
Get real! The GOP may appear to be at odds occasionally but the party is not stupid. They know how to run campaigns and understand the nuts and bolts of winning.
What the GOP has lacked however is a leader; this is where Sarah comes in. There is nobody now in the GOP who has the drawing power commensurate with the ability to convince people to go to the polls. If there was somebody else he or she would have stepped forward by now.

A couple of points: 1. I don’t know how you have lots of sizzle, lots of fundraising, an army of devoted robots and few actual votes. The last one to have the first three is now in the White House. 2. Ron Paul never had what I would call an “army”. More like a platoon.

The world is changing at an exponential rate and whatever the so called “experts” predict about politics in America is going to be obsolete within one year. Democrats, squishy Republicans and especially the sycophantic toadies in the MSM are going to be plague carriers and treated as such.
American exceptionalism and pride of country are going to make a sweeping recovery after the results of this administration’s profound bungling of the leadership and influence of the United States of America come to fruition.
What will be the political result of the greatest failure in the history of the presidency in a time of the greatest challenge and threat? I would guess that someone who is untainted by the Washington status quo will rise to the top. Someone who has been mercilessly attacked by the very architects of the failure. Someone who has continually espoused those qualities of country that have elevated the United States to be the greatest nation on the planet. And especially someone who can draw a crowd of thousands with a two hour notice.
These are unique times with unique challenges and the outcome is impossible to predict. I know what I would like to see happen.

Last year, Sarah Palin was a breath of fresh air to me. Being female, I like strong ethical women who are straight shooters, and who are honest. Let’s face it, John McCain’s campaign was at a standstill until this woman came along. After the election when McCain didn’t immediately come to Palin’s defense and stop all the backstabing from his people, I lost all respect for the man. And proceded to lose more respect for a party that couldn’t see what the attraction was and seemed determined to aid the Dems and the Media in destroying her.
We’ll she’s slipped out of the trap they thought they had her in. Time to think, speak, raise money and oppose the the socialist insanity in DC.
Paraphrasing Reagan here. ” There are simple answers, they just aren’t easy answers” Sarah understands that, and that’s a threat to all the gvmnt technocratic elite who assure us they know better and that we can’t get along without them.
