What takes my breath away is the thought that if Saddam had been assassinated in 1995, none of the 4000 American servicemen and women would have had to give the ultimate sacrifice.

Maybe, maybe not. Remember, he was Dear Leader, but he also had two sons to succeed him, not to mention 51 other cards in the deck. My guess is that someone would have replaced him who would have been just as bad. And we would still have ended up going into Iraq at some point.

If you’ll think back to “Seven days of the Condor” (or the shorter movie), the focus was on a group which summarized books. Unknown to this group, the summaries were being filtered into ideas for a government covert operations organization.

This kind of “oversight” would require that every such idea be reported to Congress. Of course, the concept doesn’t pass the laugh test. This is just people in Congress looking for an excuse to whine.

Can’t say that I’m real impressed with the Republican party incarnation on this stuff, either. Just once I would really, really like to have something to vote for instead of against.
