Pelosi gags Republicans to save Dems from embarrassment

Nancy Pelosi in November 2006:
This year, voters elected Democratic candidates from every region of America, giving Democrats the majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and entrusting us with a great deal of responsibility for building that future.
With their votes, the American people asked for change. They cast their ballots in favor of a New Direction.
They called for greater integrity in Washington, and Democrats pledge to make this the most honest, ethical, and open Congress in history.
The American people called for greater civility in how Congress conducts its work, and Democrats pledge to conduct our work with civility and bipartisanship, and to act in partnership – not partisanship – with the president and Republicans in Congress.
Nancy Pelosi in action, July 2009:
In their zeal to protect their members from politically hazardous votes on issues such as gay marriage and gun control, Democrats running the House of Representatives are taking extraordinary steps to muzzle Republicans in this summer’s debates on spending bills. …
The tradition has often meant laborious debates. But it has allowed lawmakers with little seniority to have their say on doling out the one-third of the federal budget passed by Congress each year. It was a right the Democrats zealously defended when they were the minority party from 1995 through 2006.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., insists the clampdown is to prevent debates from dragging on and on. Republicans, however, have agreed to limit the amount of time debating the bills.
Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., acknowledged in a brief interview that one reason for restricting amendments is to save members of his party from having to cast politically painful votes. …
Even some Democrats are chafing at the heavy-handed clampdown on debate. Abortion opponent Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., on Thursday lashed out at his party’s leaders for denying him and others a chance to vote on restoring a long-standing directive by Congress blocking taxpayer-funded abortions in Washington, D.C.
At least the Associated Press is reporting this kind of hypocrisy these days.

Politically painful votes? What does that mean exactly? If you are for something than you should vote for it, otherwise say no. It seems like such an easy concept. Both parties are spineless weasels who want to tell everyone that they are on their side. What annoys me the most is that the Republicans agreed to it. I just wish someone would grow a backbone on the Right and tell the Democrats exactly what they can do with their ideas.

Gagging republicans ….. that’s torture. I demand a hearing, and miranda rights be read to all republicans from this day forward.
fogw on July 16, 2009 at 6:08 PM
Now where did that “Minority Bill of Rights” go, Pelosi? Remember that?
Bishop on July 16, 2009 at 6:10 PM
No, no – the Dems are all for allowing debate on the issues…remember this stunt back in May, in the interest of bi-partisanship?:
From Rachel Maddow (I threw up a little in my mouth typing that!): The newest staffer in Congress works for the House Energy Committee, has the lowly title of Staff Assistant, and would not give his name to the Wall Street Journal when a reporter asked for it last night. The one thing we know about this new staff assistant in Congress is that he works for the Democrats and he’s a speed reader. Professionally. He is a professional speed reader. He can read an entire page of text out loud in 34 seconds.
The reason he’s been hired is because the Republican plan to block the Democrat’s Global Warming Bill is allegedly to force all 946 pages of that bill to be read aloud followed by the text of all the several hundred amendments the Republicans plan to offer to the this Bill, even though they know that basically all of those amendments will fail. The plan is to make the process of passing the Bill take so long that it fails through shear exhaustion. Hence the Democrats hiring a speed reader.
You know, sometimes Congress is just one big game of “Oh Yeah,” … “Yeah” … “Oh Yeah,” … “Yeah!”
Throw all of the a$$clowns out, starting with Ms. Botox!

lorien1973 on July 16, 2009 at 6:11 PM
Politically painful votes are those that your leadership wants, your constituents don’t and that might get you un-elected. As we all know, getting re-elected over and over is the purpose of getting elected in the first place.
mchristian on July 16, 2009 at 6:12 PM

By agreeing to time limits, they took away the excuse the dems had to silence the Republicans. The excuse the Republicans will not play nice holds no water. It was a great move by the Republicans to expose the dems.

Does Pelosi own the Capitol steps? NO. If hand wringing republican congresscritters have ANY testosterone left they would be out on the Capitol steps with microphones and loudspeakers voicing their objections around the clock non-stop. We the People don’t really give a damn whether you’re in the house chamber or not fighting back. Take it outside and make a scene. NOW is the time to be the party of NO (or die in shameful obscurity)!

Off to the old folks graveyard with Nancy … maybe a little wine and morphine to ease her pain.

With the current climate across the country, One would think that if someone in congress just stood up and tried some principled leadership, they would have untold support and a loyal following. It is just so irritating to watch as our freedoms are legislated away and the electeds do little to nothing. This is not the time to give up though. WE the People still have the responsibility to turn this around.

Payback is a bitch. If conservatives ever get the majority again, I say we take no prisoners and ram down their throats every damn thing we need to in order to get our house in order no matter what the opposition cries about. This is what we deserve for playing patty cake with thugs.

I have 3 words for every politician who is running for an office in 2010……..CAN YOU READ?
yoda on July 16, 2009 at 8:28 PM
I’m a Republican. I live in Palm Beach County, Florida. My representative is Ron Klein, a Democrat, so I effectively, the way the rules are played now, have no representative in Congress. I know the press would never allow the Republicans to do this, even if they had the same margins. That’s what I really find amazing. This last election had more consequences than most people ever thought possible. It gave Pelosi & company the right to steam-roll the Republicans, pass bills no one reads, and spend the country into oblivion.
I hope the Republicans are taking notes because, if this continues, they will be taking over again in 2010 and I hope they treat the Democrats the same exact way and call them every time they cry. I also hope they lay it on the press for their silence, while Pelosi, Obama, and Reid were pulling their tricks.

Rs have a decent shot at retaking the house next year given the economy’s free fall. Should they do so, they should pay this treatment back in spades. But I won’t hold my breath, it is the Stupid Party after all.
Speaking of stupid, another thing that’s just plain dumb is the argument that Rs shouldn’t do X (e.g. nuclear option) because that sets the precedent for the Ds to do it when they get power. THEY WILL ANYWAY IF IT SUITS THEM, YOU IDIOTS.
