Obama begs Senate: We must pass my disastrous health care bill ASAP

posted at 9:06 pm on July 16, 2009 by Allahpundit

I don’t blame him. The longer this drags out, the more time they’ll have to actually read the bill. Witness the fierce urgency of fiscal catastrophe:

After another intense day of closed-door negotiations, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and other senators emerged from a meeting Thursday to admit they had not reached the finish line.

“We’re ready when we’re ready but we’re not going to be ready today,” Baucus told reporters. “We’re very close to reaching agreement. By close, I mean it’s a matter of couple, three or four days, maybe.”

That may not be close enough for Obama, who has repeatedly said he wants both the House and Senate to approve their respective versions of healthcare reform before Congress departs for its August recess…

Following the White House gathering, the urgency of Baucus’s work appeared to intensify. But in announcing the senators had not made a deal, Baucus also said they would not meet again until next week…

“It takes time and that’s what I expressed to the president today, that I hope we can have flexibility on the timeframe so that we can make the best decisions possible on this monumental challenge,” [Olympia] Snowe said. “Well, I don’t know that he necessarily agreed.”

In fact, Snowe said, the Senate should wait until after the August recess to give senators time to review the combined Finance and HELP committee package and get feedback from constituents.

Everyone’s a bit jaded about The One’s modus operandi by now but it’s worth stepping back to drink this in. We’re talking here about his signature policy issue, the most significant domestic legislation that Congress has considered in decades, and rather than take his time and be meticulous about it, Obama’s trying to ram it through as quickly as he can for reasons of either ego or pure political expediency. That “pass something, anything!” approach could be understood (if not forgiven) in the case of the stimulus recovery “stabilization” bill, since the whole point was to start pushing money out the door as quickly as possible — which didn’t happen, natch. But what’s the excuse this time? What pressing policy consideration demands that this turd be pinched off before August instead of letting Congress take its time? Any lefties want to help me out?

So confident is The One in the success of his program that he’s desperately seeking another “bipartisan” fig leaf a la the Snowe/Specter/Collins votes for the stimulus to share blame when everything goes wrong. Exit question via Ace: How long will it be before Obama starts insisting that he never said universal health care would save money in the long run?

Obama is becoming a lame duck, and he’s just smart enough to know it. He needs a victory of some kind, or we’re going to celebrate Labor Day without a single national poll due to the fact that every one of them will be negative. Yes, even CBS.

Mark Levin played Sen. Snowe’s remarks after leaving her meeting with Pres. Obama. She said she would not be rushed and that time lines mean nothing to her. She said this was too big to do incorrectly. The best we can hope for is that it takes longer and the public finds out enough to turn against it.

When did we become a government that will pass bills without anyone reading them?

When did we become so stupid as to ram something through that hasn’t been read and will just kill this country?

Heathcare reform and cap and trade will devastate this country. Yet, idiots support them. What am I missing here?

Blake on July 16, 2009 at 9:15 PM

Quick! Pass the bill before anyone finds out what’s in it! Once they do, we’re screwed!

The only possible reason for needing this passed right freaking now is because they’ve seen the poll numbers, and know that the longer they wait, the less support they’ll get. He got away with it passing the “stimulus” bill, but failed on Cap and Tax Trade.

To fail again might cause some to question his holy omnipotence. Or is that impotence? I get confused…

If Gary the used car dealer operating out of a broken down trailer in a vacant lot across town in the low rent district told you you had to buy this car today, right now, or it would never be such a deal ever again….would you take out your wallet and hand over the cash never having test driven the car, nor had your own mechanic look at it…merely trusting Gary that the car sitting in the lot is as perfect and wonderful as he claims it is…only one owner, never drove except to church on Sunday….?

Only a total fool would buy the car under conditions like that.

So….right now, Obama is telling us that we have to buy this thing, today, right now….immediately.

Why is that?

Seriously…why the rush?

We are buying a lot more than just a used car of dubious history.

Thank you ma’am

It takes time and that’s what I expressed to the president

…that’s when he fell face-down on the floor banging his fists and kicking his feet while screaming hysterically. I just pushed my cart to another aisle so other shoppers wouldn’t suspect he belonged to me.

ericdijon on July 16, 2009 at 9:55 PM

Republicans couldn’t get it right. That’s why they were defeated soundly in 2006 and 2008. As Bruno would say, the GOP is sooo 2004.

dcwvu on July 16, 2009 at 9:50 PM

Anyone who quotes Bruno does not deserve to be a commentor on HA.

txag92 on July 16, 2009 at 9:55 PM

To Obama:
Drop your granny pants around your knees and stuff this bill, every stinking page of it, right up that stinking rectum. Then take cap & tax, the death tax, and every bit of paper that’s added to the deficit and cram that in your fanny as well.

This president is a big fat NOTHING. A ZERO. LOSER. CARTER TIMES 1,000. GO HOME AND GET YOUR SHINE BOX. YOU LOSE!

Spiritk9 on July 16, 2009 at 9:55 PM

Does anyone in Washington pay attention to the Constitution any longer? We know the Democrats don’t but the GOP could to a man/woman oppose this purely on Constitutional grounds.

Funny YOU bring up Bruno

Let me see if I have this right . Bush sucks so Obama is good?
That is your logic. Your are a dupe and are being played. Hell –Obama will not even stand up for gay rights.

Enjoy paying for this mess,

Der Fuhrer says PASS IT NOW! DON’T READ IT! DON’T THINK ABOUT IT! DON’T DEBATE IT! THIS IS AN EMERGENCY! PEOPLE ARE DYING IN THE STREETS!

Besides, the public is beginning to wake up and the last think I need is the American public actually THINKING for itself. That’s my job! I am The One!

GarandFan on July 16, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Look dcwvu, don’t you have a garbage can to go throw at fans at football games when you lose?

Your party is converting America to a fascist state run by Ogabe, Pelousy, and Fried. I know you guys like dominating people, forcing them to do things you fascists absolutely demand as subservience, but I’ll make a deal with you:

You leave and go back to the Soviet Union, we’ll leave you alone.

JP1986UM on July 16, 2009 at 9:57 PM

This is the political equivalent of date rape. Hurry up–slip her something, before she wakes up.

The president is obviously treating the American people with the same respect as a one-night stand. He just wants to get what he wants out of us then cast us to the wayside.

Will the mothers and fathers in this country stand up?

From my log of my first psychotherapy session with Barack Obama:

Barack Obama has two very distinctive personalities at the same time right now in the present and he goes back and forth between the two. He doesn’t seem to be able to make up his mind which he wants to be. I have named the one personality Homie Obama and the other Squire Obama.

Homie Obama is an angry Black man who found his soul mate in Michelle the angry hate America Black woman of his dreams and in Jeremiah Wright the God damn America and curse all things whitey firebrand mentor he had been searching for.

Squire Obama on the other hand is an upper class elitist white liberal in the John Kerry mode who really very much wanted to marry a rich white woman and only married Michelle instead as he needed to establish his Black cover and sought out Jeremiah Wright simply to gain his Black credentials or in the vernacular “creds”.

This is making treating him most difficult as it is most vexing to determine if he is coming or going, an upper class elitist white liberal very much in the mode of John Kerry or an angry ghetto Black man.

Call Grassley – melt his phone line. Ask if he needs the Constitution read to him.

Ask your own senators at just what rate of taxation they would consider We the People slaves or indentured servants in service to the federal government. 40%? 50%? 60%?

DerKrieger on July 16, 2009 at 10:00 PM

I have yet to hear anyone object to the dems’ insane idea that it is the job of the federal government to open up a company in order to “provide competition” to private companies. Usually, the lunatic left tries to sell these programs by stretching “general welfare” oput of shape, but they are skipping that and just selling this as the fed’s “providing competition”. It is utterly insane. I don’t know why no one has challenged them to defend the Constitutionality of that (I wanted to hear someone ask Sotomayor about this, as part of the limits of the power of the federal government). I don’t know what the hell is going on.
