Biden: Come see the Porkulus Paradise

posted at 4:00 pm on July 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Joe Biden wants to make a big splash by campaigning in Eric Cantor’s district to rebuild support for Porkulus, despite its utter failure to stop the massive bleeding of jobs in the US.  Apparently, Cantor’s Republican reply to Barack Obama’s weekly radio address stung the White House a little more than first thought.  However, if the Washington Post has Biden’s speech correct, Obama may want to send him to a state funeral overseas for a while instead:

Vice President Biden plans a political broadside this afternoon in the home district of Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), accusing the senior Republican lawmaker of joining in his party’s smear of the $787 billion Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“To those who say that our economic decisions ‘have not produced jobs, have not produced prosperity, and simply have not worked’ I say, take a look around,” Biden will say, according to prepared remarks obtained by The Washington Post.

“I say, ‘Don’t let your opposition to the Recovery Act blind you to its results,’” Biden plans to say in the Richmond speech. “‘Come see what I see everywhere I go: workers rehired, factories reopened, cops on the street, teachers in the classroom, progress toward getting our economy back on the move.’”

Without naming Cantor directly, the rhetorical assault is aimed directly at the Richmond lawmaker, who has helped lead the Republican Party to its most effective message since Obama became president: that Obama’s stimulus bill has not produced jobs.

Is that what Biden sees wherever he goes?  Because this is what the Bureau of Labor Statistics has seen thus far in 2009.  As we can tell from the seasonally adjusted unemployment levels, Americans see a much different picture than Biden:

  • January – 11,616,000 unemployed
  • February – 12,467,000
  • March – 13,161,000
  • April – 13,724,000
  • May – 14,511,000
  • June – 14,729,000

Maybe he’d do better in New Hampshire with his vision of America getting back to work.  They got $416 million in Porkulus funds, which created a whopping 50 jobs — 34 of them full-time.

Meanwhile, exactly what prosperity has Porkulus created?  Did we have an economic recovery yesterday that the media missed?  Are people once again flush with cash?

Our opposition to Porkulus has not made us blind to its results, or especially the lack thereof.  If Biden wants to go to Virginia and claim that America has entered a new age of prosperity and full employment, then the constituents in that district will reasonably deduce that it is Biden who has blinded himself to America’s economic misery — and may have also gone a little crazy to boot.

Surprised Joe hasn’t used some of the stimulus to get more plugs or a better weave.

workers rehired, factories reopened, cops on the street, teachers in the classroom, progress toward getting our economy back on the move.

Tapper, here’s your next question(s) for Gibbs: Workers rehired where? Factories reopened where? Progress in what sense? Etc.

LastRick on July 16, 2009 at 4:04 PM

Soon enough Ogabe and Biden will be giving those speeches either from behind a line of armed, U.S. Marines or from an undisclosed, underground bunker somewhere in DC, just so they don’t get overrun and mauled by the angry crowds.

I wish this administration would make up its damn mind. Biden says they misread the economy. Then Obama says porkulus is a 2-year plan(after saying the effects would be immediate). Then he says it’s working exactly as planned. Now Biden is saying it’s working. So which is it?

BTW, despite HISD(Houston Independent School District for the non-Texans) getting somewhere around 300 mil in porkulus money over the next two years, I just heard today that the tech department where I work had its budget slashed by $81,000 for the 2009-10 calendar year.

It’s one thing to argue that maybe some jobs have been saved or some infrastructure projects have been funded, but to say that Porkulus has created prosperity is absolutely hilarious.

JohnInCA on July 16, 2009 at 4:46 PM

That’s one of the biggest problems with porkulus. This money isn’t permanent. So for these jobs to remain beyond the next couple years, either the states will have to fund it themselves or the money will have to be worked into the federal budget. In other words, a permanent expansion of government.

Doughboy on July 16, 2009 at 4:50 PM

True, true. And the great thing about Biden is that every now and then he slips and actually tells the truth. Like the fact that they didn’t know what the hell they were doing when they passed Porkulus or that Porkulus money is being wasted and people are being scammed.

They’ve got him back on message the last few days. But, of course, that’s when he sounds even more stupid because he has to defend these crappy policies with a straight face.

Watching Smokin’ Joe get slapped down again and again by Obammy, I’ve developed a crazy fantasy that one day Joe wakes up and says to himself, “I’m tired of being ridiculed by this clean, articulate negro.”

And so he calls a news conference and announces that he joined the ticket, believing in positive change but has been sorely disappointed. The President spends too much, has too ambitious of an agenda. That the sort of fundamental changes the President seeks to force through in mere months demand more thoughtful, measured consideration.

If Joe had any brains, he’d realize that this would be a way for him to become a truly historic figure (and cash in with a best-selling book).

But, of course, Joe has no brain. And no balls.

Only anti soviet propaganda that hospital waits were forever, no bread or meat in stores, no modern cars, appliances, etc for the working man. Maybe Obama, with all his 32 czars, will recreate a Potemkin Village where all is love and joy and new factories are springing up like dandelions on a summer’s lawn.
