Kyl, McCain to White House: Threats “patently offensive”

posted at 6:30 pm on July 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The tag-team effort to intimidate Senator Jon Kyl and the state of Arizona by threatening to withhold federal funds got a quick, pointed, and direct response from Kyl and his fellow Senator, John McCain.  The two sent letters to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that castigates them for their “patently offensive” threats — and a reminder where the money originates:

We were very disappointed to learn of the letters that you and other members of the
Cabinet sent to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer about stimulus spending and that you would allow
your good offices to be used so obviously for political purposes.

Secretary LaHood’s suggestion that the Administration will “make available” to
Arizonans tax dollars that they pay is patently offensive.

We hope this does not characterize your dealings with the Congress in the future.

Kyl had already offered this response yesterday:

It’s unfortunate that President Obama and his administration seem unwilling to debate the merits of the stimulus bill and acknowledge its shortcomings.  Instead, they have resorted to coordinated political attacks with the Democratic National Committee and the politicization of departments of government by using cabinet secretaries to issue thinly veiled threats to the Governor and the people of Arizona.  Since even the President acknowledges the stimulus isn’t working as well as he hoped, the administration should instead be willing to consider whether the unallocated stimulus money could be put to better use.

If they can’t win by argument, the Obama administration will resort to threats.  It’s apparently their money now, and they’re loathe to give it back to the ungrateful wretches that gave it to them in the first place.  What’s not to understand?

Good letter, gentlemen.

We cannot allow this sort of extortion to continue.

Uh, this is straight FDR economics. Using federal tax dollars as a political leverage. Nothing new. And, apparently, business as usual.

This administration is taking all the worst parts of FDR’s imperial America and all the worst parts of Jimmuh Carter’s “hit me, please” foreign policy.

Lots of “uck” words being used by this Administration.

Words, just words!

Wonder if the 57th state will receive the same threat for their stance on the Stimulus monies?

Good for Sen Kyl & McCain! It’s OUR MONEY and WE have a RIGHT to complain and hold the Democrats accountable!!

I would like to add my complaint of the Stimulus on behalf of the good people of Tennessee: Where are the jobs? I am sick of all the spending; who is going to pay for the $12 Billion upgrades to the community colleges??..Who is going to pay for FREE healthcare? How will ALL this spending create jobs?

I must disagree. “Chicago tactics” work in every one of our major cities where most of their political structure has been DemoSleaze controlled for over a century. Where has the Chicago Way NOT worked? New York? Newark? Philadelphia? Boston? Providence? Miami? Atlanta? Los Angeles? Denver? Milwaukee? Minneapolis-St.Paul? etc, etc.

What State Houses does “pay-for-play” NOT work in?

To think that buying voters votes with their own money doesn’t work is a bit naieve. Obama is just the first to bring it as aggressively and in-your-face as he has. But, he must, he’s got a deadline, because his House of Chicago Slease is due for some major demolition and remodeling in Nov, 2010.

…actually, he has much less time than that.

The media supinely allowing him and his thugs to steamroller over them (aren’t whores normally supine?), this only extends the normal “presidential honeymoon” period a little bit. Even with their “failing” to report his faux pas, the word’s getting out.

The number to watch is the unemployment figures. The impact of cap-and-rob on the portfolios of his major contributors and enablers might signify, but what’s going to really have teeth is the unemployment figures. He can blame the Bush Administration for a while, but as the figures climb and stubbornly refuse to come down, his honeymoon will wear thin.

That, and we can just sit back and wait for his brethren in ACORN to perpetrate another loud outrage or shady maneuver…fuel for the fire.

Nope…he’ll be wounded and bleeding long before the congressional elections…let’s hope that he takes a few of those pimps out with him….

The Strange Case of Professor Obama and Mr Hussein is a real life drama playing out in the aftermath of the Presidential election of 2008. It is about the dilemma of the American citizen who sees strange dissonances between the new found Messiah, Professor Obama, and the misanthropic Mr. Hussein. It is a vivid portrayal of a split personality, split in the sense that within the same person there is both an apparently good, or at least pretense of, and an evil personality each being quite distinct from the other. In mainstream culture the very phrase “Obama and Hussien” will come to mean a person who’s words are vastly different in moral character from his actions.

TN Mom on July 15, 2009 at 6:43 PM

You know who will not be paying for it? Guess who will keep getting free healthcare, but who will not be forced to buy health insurance (or pay a fine for not buying it)? If you guessed “illegal aliens” give yourself a cookie.

The Dims’ healthcare bill specifically exempts illegal aliens from the requirement of buying health insurance that they’re imposing on every American citizen. The bill also contains no requirement that any U.S. health care provider (hospital, doctor, clinic, etc.) check the immigration status of a person seeking treatment.

So millions of illegal aliens will continue to get free (for them) healthcare at the expense of U.S. citizens, while Americans will be paying more (in the form of mandated insurance premiums, fines, higher taxes), and getting less choice and lower quality care.

Great plan, eh?

Part of the reason we’re here is not just because of the Marxists/Progressives/Liberals but a heck of a lot of so-called Conservatives in government who have failed us throughout the last century in particular.

As long as we were fat and happy we didn’t really care, and just shrugged our shoulders and said, “Oh well, that’s politics!”…and vote the same SOBs back into office. The only thing is we never realized that we could have been fatter and happier because compared to everyone else we were way better off.

Next step the filthy partisan whore at DHS, Secretary Gates at Defense, and the director of FEMA all send letters saying that their departments might just not respond quickly in the event of a national emergency.

True, but if you go over to Ace’s, they do have Valu-Rite; it does an Ewok good.

Just wait until they start pulling the strings on all the other states.

We need to march on Washington. Fuck calling congress. They aren’t listening.

texaninfidel on July 15, 2009 at 6:56 PM

You’re absolutely fucking-A right. Faxes and phone calls and emails aren’t working. Apparently we actually have to go to DC and show up in person at the Capitol before they’ll pay any attention to us.

The money in your pocket is there only because they allow you to have it. And don’t you forget it.

How could we ever forget with daily reminders from this smug, arrogant Chicago Machine.

Kyl, McCain to White House: Threats “patently offensive”

“Criminal” is the word they were looking for.

It’s about time that the GOP started calling a spade, “a spade”.

progressoverpeace on July 15, 2009 at 8:46 PM

If they can’t win by argument, the Obama administration will resort to threats. It’s apparently their money now, and they’re loathe to give it back to the ungrateful wretches that gave it to them in the first place. What’s not to understand?

haha well said.

thinkagain on July 15, 2009 at 8:56 PM

I saw a a great turn of phrase the other day that sums it up perfectly,..”If it sounds like Marx, acts like Mussolini, then its probably Obama!”

This is too close to the truth for comfort. Obama is following the trail blazed by il’Duce. His Chicago Mob ties coupled with a blend of Marx’s collectivism & an Eco version of Benito’s Fascism.

We are soooo screeeeewed!

I can’t speak for all Arizonans, but as for me stick the STIMULUS money where the sun don’t shine. I wont be a party to black male by anybody for any reason. Tony Soprano is an amateur compared to these Chicago thugs.

AZ here, we dont need no stinkin stimulus

Napolitano left us with a huge deficit and we will fix it ourselves, we do not want their money, just leave us be, we also do not want and are voting on refusing to be MANDATORILY enrolled in federal health care or cap and trade limits in our state…

here is what our State Rep told AZ in an editorial this March:

Sen. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, for the March 6 issue of the Arizona Capitol Times.

He outlined the reality of the budget crisis – the state has a $3 billion deficit for fiscal 2010. …

…Harper ended his commentary with a message to those Arizonans who are “underemployed or overexpectant.”

“If you are relying on any services from the state that are not mandated by the federal government, I advise you that those services may end June 30, 2009.

“If you have children that require expensive experimental treatment or therapy that is not provided by the federal government, I advise that the state does not have the money for it after June 30.

“If you have been laid off from your job and are not willing to take a job that is available, unemployment benefits, food stamps and AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System) for health care are going to fall short of what you could make by being employed.

“Arizona will not follow the country into socialism. If you feel you need greater assistance and are not able to move to another state, please turn to your local churches and give them the opportunity to show their generosity and love.”

This is BS. Obama is a GD thug pure and simple and the GOP better step up its game and hit back hard going forward. This SOB really believes that he and a cabal of Progressive elites know how to run our lives better than we do.

I’m ready for a revolution. I won’t be a slave to our government or to zero-liability voters.

This response was a good first step. I still think that nothing is going to change until people are in the streets protesting this corrupt administration and all the damage it has done to America. Until we reach that point (and I think it could be only months off if the filthy liar rams through healthcare without GOP support, unemployment rises, and some interational crisis arises), angry letters pointing out that the filthy liar is nothing but a street thug is a good step.

I agree. I’m just prodding them a bit. The official rhetoric certainly has to get more accurate, but I’m glad to see that they are fighting back a little.

As to the protests, I think you’re correct on that. This is a bit of a shame, since conservatives are not the protesting types, but some real action is going to be necessary. I am thinking that a real work stoppage is where this might have to go. Of course, a diving stock market would stop the Washingotn junta right in their tracks, too. The question is whether that will happen soon enough, or wait until after everything is totally screwed up.

highhopes on July 15, 2009 at 9:15 PM

Yeah. I’m with you, highhopes. But I would like to hear some GOPers in Washington start talking about treason and high crimes and misdemeanors. The Dems aren’t bashful about their third-world “truth commissions” and I’d like someone to let them know that they are not going to be let off for the damage they are causing. The Washington junta still don’t hear the footsteps. They think that, if they lose, they’ll just carry on. They need to understand that they will have to pay for their actions, eventually.

I appreciate Kyl’s and McCain’s words, though McCain had his chance back … Eh. You know what I’m going to say.

progressoverpeace on July 15, 2009 at 9:31 PM

Is it any surprise that Barry forced a private company to fire the soldier who wanted him to prove he’s eligible to be president?

This guy is so transparent, except about what he should be transparent about.
