Good news: Sotomayor confuses “eminent” with “imminent” — twice

posted at 7:30 pm on July 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

Excruciating to watch, and apparently not her only malaprop of the day. According to Ed Whelan, she confused “providence” with “province” and said “story of knowledge” when she meant “store of knowledge,” too. If the boss routinely made embarrassing mistakes like this on her blog, it’d be a running joke among the nutroots; as it is, the fact that a federal appellate judge turned Supreme Court justice is making them at a congressional hearing will doubtless go blissfully unremarked upon. Although to be fair, she only ever claimed to be wise, not to have the vocabulary of, say, the average 10th-grader. Awesome, awesome pick, Barry.

Anyway. Doubtless we’ll soon be told that it’s racist somehow to even mention this, so I preemptively denounce both myself and Whelan for noticing it.

Update: For added nuance, bear in mind that Sotomayor herself is famously a stickler for proper usage in lawyer’s briefs, once writing, “each time I see a split infinitive, an inconsistent tense structure or the unnecessary use of the passive voice, I blister.”

Mispronouncing or misusing words is sometimes common among hispanics, (think Ricky Ricardo for an overly ridiculous example). I also know this because I grew up with many of these people. It doesn’t mean they aren’t intelligent, but it does sort of leave an impression…

Sorry, I’ll give folks a pass on pronunciation (“nukular” never bothered me that much), but incorrect usage indicates ignorance.

Look, the vowel sound difference between imminent and eminent is very fine, and under certain accents I could see the two words sounding the same. I pronounce ‘tin’ and ‘ten’ exactly the same, for example.

And that’d be a fine explanation if she was speaking quickly. She’s not. Especially the second time she says it, she articulates it very clearly. Pauses for effect, even. There’s no doubt what she’s saying.

I assume CNN is pushing the racist meme onto Senator Coburn with the “splainin” comment? Also, isn’t it telling that they would spell out Republican, but abbreviate Senator. Par for the course, I suppose, for a$$hole$.

Califemme on July 15, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Doctor Zero on July 15, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Well … but she obviously knows the meaning of the word she’s using. Do you think she was spelling it “em” in her head? I don’t know that in the course of ordinary conversation I would listen for a small vowel distinction like that. I would grasp the meaning of the word from context and not even notice the pronunciation, probably.

Anwyn on July 15, 2009 at 8:02 PM

DeweyWins on July 15, 2009 at 8:03 PM

Well … but she obviously knows the meaning of the word she’s using. Do you think she was spelling it “em” in her head?

Don’t know, but as I say, these aren’t arcane words. Eminent and imminent are key legal concepts. It blows my mind that a judge would confuse them under any circumstances.

I’d have probably given her the benefit of the doubt if not for the other mistakes Whelan noticed.

Allahpundit on July 15, 2009 at 8:04 PM

I hear she left her libary card in the council of her car. /snark

But seriously folks–she is a wise Latina woman–any mistakes she makes with the English language are the fault of our racist educational system anyway.

The question I would most like to ask (channeling the voice of Lindsey Graham); “Judge, when you say that a Latina woman would make a better decision than a white male–in your opinion does this bring us closer to, or move us farther from the dream of Dr. King, specifically, “to be judged not on the color of their skin, but on the content of their character?”
