Palin on cap-and-trade: Job-killer
posted at 10:11 am on July 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin takes on Barack Obama on his home turf, so to speak, by penning an op-ed in the Washington Post. On Sunday, Obama’s own Post column attempted to defend his stimulus package and plead for patience, promising that new jobs will arrive over the next two years. Two days later, Palin assails his cap-and-trade bill as a job killer that will wipe out many more jobs than Porkulus could ever create:
American prosperity has always been driven by the steady supply of abundant, affordable energy. Particularly in Alaska, we understand the inherent link between energy and prosperity, energy and opportunity, and energy and security. Consequently, many of us in this huge, energy-rich state recognize that the president’s cap-and-trade energy tax would adversely affect every aspect of the U.S. economy.
There is no denying that as the world becomes more industrialized, we need to reform our energy policy and become less dependent on foreign energy sources. But the answer doesn’t lie in making energy scarcer and more expensive! Those who understand the issue know we can meet our energy needs and environmental challenges without destroying America’s economy.
Job losses are so certain under this new cap-and-tax plan that it includes a provision accommodating newly unemployed workers from the resulting dried-up energy sector, to the tune of $4.2 billion over eight years. So much for creating jobs.
In addition to immediately increasing unemployment in the energy sector, even more American jobs will be threatened by the rising cost of doing business under the cap-and-tax plan. For example, the cost of farming will certainly increase, driving down farm incomes while driving up grocery prices. The costs of manufacturing, warehousing and transportation will also increase.
The ironic beauty in this plan? Soon, even the most ardent liberal will understand supply-side economics.
Unfortunately, the ironic beauty will only become apparent after cap-and-trade does severe damage to our economy and standard of living. Even then, the most ardent liberals won’t admit a problem at all, because the push for cap-and-trade has other motivations than just lowering CO2 in the atmosphere. Those pushing cap-and-trade and making hysterical pronouncements about having only 96 months until the end of the world want to push people into statist control of energy production. They’re not worried about falling standards of living; most of them think we exploit too many natural resources anyway, and that less energy and less of everything would bring about the kind of harmony they desire — and want to impose on everyone else.
We need to make all of this clear. Cap-and-trade rations energy production, which means there will be less of it for a long time. Alternatives are not ready for the kind of mass production that would allow a complete replacement of energy, and probably won’t be for decades, if ever in some cases (notably wind power, as GreenChoice showed and as T. Boone Pickens finally realized). That means a lower standard of living that will impact America regressively, with the lowest income earners getting hit the hardest. The drain on the economy from high energy prices means less jobs and higher retail prices for goods and services, again a regressive consequence of energy rationing.
Obama and his Utopian allies promise that government will help close the gap by offering more services to the unemployed and the poor at the expense of the “rich”. What will that do? It will further handicap the economy by keeping capital out of the markets. Even worse, it will vastly expand the dependent class in America who have to go on the dole to survive. And many of those ardent liberals will be pretty happy with that outcome, too.

Posting from an Alaska Liberal Blog that is known to lie is not going to get you anywhere.

I will argue till the cows come home on abortion. But her attitude didn’t bother me. It was completely commonsense. Ditto for other cultural issues, such as gay rights.
As she said, “Hey, my family is diverse. We argue, over pie.”
Really, I thought this last election was one for the books, in terms of nuanced positions that don’t offend anyone. That’s not real politics. Even my fave guy will bug me at times!
Let’s get back to non-controlled, free-wheeling politics. That is, actually, our history.
AnninCA on July 14, 2009 at 12:25 PM
She argued publicly with McCain over energy.
That’s not going to be a come back and haunt you deal.
Now, abortion? That could be. I think a lot of people invested in that issue think she’s more right-wing than she really is.
AnninCA on July 14, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Well, I guess it’s a start, but…
A. It doesn’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know.
B. I’ts in the WaPo, which isn’t read by anyone who doesn’t already know
At least WaPo gave her space, unlike the NYT when they refused an OpEd from McCain.
I’d like to see Palin do what Palin does best: draw enthusiastic crowds. Go city to city, with lots of web publicity beforehand, holding open-air rallies with tens of thousands of supporters. That’s the kind of stuff the MSM hasto cover. Do it on weekends; unliked Lefty “activists”, Palin’s people have jobs do to and families to care for on weekdays.
Oh, and another thing: she should be sure to have real people on the podium with her to tell stories about their economic struggles, their tax nightmares, their healthcare concerns. Give the sheep out there some people to whom they can personally relate, because that’s how they vote. Conservatives are knowledgable enough to vote on economics and American exceptionalism. Moderates need an Oprah moment.

the electric companies gave alot of money to the dems and obama. cap and trade will make them very wealth….just saying. We heard about Exxon for 8 years I think its time we start tallking about Con Ed and Duke power
unseen on July 14, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Cap and trade was originally one of Enron’s ideas. Arguably they had as much of a role in starting the AGW craze as Hansen did. Odd how the media aren’t interested in that connection…however.
18-1 on July 14, 2009 at 12:36 PM
This is from the headlines thread, but I wanted to share this over here too.
Over time, this cap ‘n trade deal can be tied in to Obamacare, oppressive taxation, over regulation, weakening our military strength, 1st,2nd 10th amendments as an element of the statist agenda to undermine the Constitution to limit individual liberty and control our lives.
Expand the narrative from here to the big picture, in consumable increments like this op-ed, one at a time.
Then, in her personal appearances, they can really be tied together as a picture of our freedom being stolen out from under us.
I think that would go over fantastic at an event like the Tax Day Tea Party in Atlanta with 25,000 people who love freedom.
Brian1972 on July 14, 2009 at 12:32 PM
This could be the foundation. Building on several issues, separately in digestible morsels focused on one thing.
Then in her large crowd events, where you have more time thread them all together and show the liberal agenda for what it is. She is great with crowds, and the substance is there for the taking.
Brian1972 on July 14, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Ann, don’t delude yourself. She is as pro-life as they come, she’ll appoint a pro-life judge and Roe will be set aside. It could happen. So, if you want to join her bandwagon, join so with your eyes open.

A lot of good ideas floating around……. any chance that burning Couric and Letterman in effigy could be worked into the theme? lol
joedoe on July 14, 2009 at 12:49 PM
I’m loving that it begins to confront the notion that she can’t read and write, or is somehow unaware of publications like the WaPo. It’s like jamming a stick into the liberal hornet’s nest over there, with the dimbulbs spinning like tops trying to convince themselves that she didn’t write the piece or somehow doesn’t understand what she actually wrote. It’s much better than prime-time comedy!
littleguy on July 14, 2009 at 12:49 PM
I hear you, omnipotent. Ed pronounces her career dead, and 10 days later HotAir is still flooded with Palin posts and the lady herself is being published in the WaPo.
Neither Ed nor Allahpundit like or respect her; you have to understand that going in.
BigD on July 14, 2009 at 12:50 PM
Hey, is this the “other shoe” the HA bloggers were promising us? Anybody seen that “other shoe?” While our bloggers are busy looking, I’ll just say:
Great job by Sarah! Now take that message to the stump, Governor! WE need energy, we need assets and we need independence from the creepy totalitarians in the ME and Asia who hold our bonds. Drilling here and drilling now could go a long, long ways toward undoing the massive damage to the economy perpetrated by the socialists and the bailout Republicans.

Love the pic of Palin……
dec5 on July 14, 2009 at 12:56 PM
You may be missing the point I was trying to make. If she appeals only to people who would like to see her force her personal views on social issue into the forefront of the way she would govern, she will never have enough votes to win a national election. She presently appeals to many who trust her not to do that and she has to maintain that trust.

I don’t think that’s true.

We need plentiful energy, so I can have lots of 93 octane gasoline for when I buy a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS with a “don’t blame me I voted for Sarah!” bumper sticker and do burnouts in front of the White House flying the “Don’t Tread On Me” flag out the window.

His state elected Jessy “the Body” Ventura governor. Elected Al Franken Senator.

If you froze your butt off 5 months out of the year and got chased by mosquitos the size of hummingbirds the other 9 (a little Obam math there) you’d get it wrong once in a while too. At least he isn’t in Love with Megan McSame as Allah is. Ed will come around in time for the 2010 elections unless hes’ a Romney only!

Another thing I hate about Obama he just made sure I don’t buy G.M or Chrysler again with his union bailout with taxpayer money bill.
I like my Jeep, Caravan, and Monte Carlo but from now on its Ford or Honda for me.
No bailouts for the Dems!
dhunter on July 14, 2009 at 1:09 PM
I want metallic blue /w white stripes, and custom red pinstriping around the white stripes. USA!
The manual 6 speed comes with the same LS3 aluminum V8 that’s in the Corvette. 435hp, and 26mpg. Bailout or not, Chevy has hit a home run with that one.
No chicklets with wheels for me, I’ll take good old fashioned American muscle!

A Huffington Post article, on Clean Coal plant construction going forward in Obama’s home state of Illinois, vis a vi permission from Obama’s energy Secretary Steven Chu, had the comments section closed after six (6) comments!!
Mcguyver on July 14, 2009 at 1:19 PM
I completely understand the sentiment, but I’m a long time Chevy guy. I love Camaros, Corvettes, Chevelles, Novas.
I can’t help myself. The new Camaro is just awesome.
Mark Levin just got a black SS. He loves it, bailout or not.
I’m not going to let the UAW and the Obama administration deprive me of something I love. It’s a great car, and it has been developed long before this situation came about.
Plus, nothing really gets to the evironazis like a totally unpractical, loud and fast V8 coupe.
I saw a 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T up close yesterday at a drive thru.
Orange, black trim. Sounded MEAN. That’s a great car too.
Chevy and Chrysler are selling full size pickups and their new muscle cars more than anything else. Take that Prius prissies!
I knew my countrymen would not let me down.
Brian1972 on July 14, 2009 at 1:19 PM
Real key is that SHE GETS IT!
None of the Washinton politicians are talking about the basic fact that a modern economy is energy based. Everything relies on abundant and CHEAP energy.
Without it, and economy will falter and fail.
Economists are so busy worring about banks (which is nothing more than a support mechanism for the production/consumption cycle for good)… that they miss the underlying BASICS of what an economy needs.
Cheap energy, reasonable Labor, and access to raw materials are what DRIVE an economy.
But here? Gov is subsidizing labor costs… won’t let us get raw materials (mining), and is driving up the cost of Energy…. a Trifecta of stupidity.
Romeo13 on July 14, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Sigh. I used to own a Dodge Challenger.

VibrioCocci on July 14, 2009 at 1:47 PM
To tie in the topic at hand, how will cap ‘n trade affect the performance aftermarket industry in America?
Fines, fees and taxes imposed on inspection or registration if you’ve modified an older car to avoid the environazimobiles of tomorrow?
Sarah and Todd Palin are into motorsports too. They understand the people like us who love automobiles for more than just AtoB transportation.
Don’t be surprised to see them turn up at a NASCAR race before long.
Brian1972 on July 14, 2009 at 1:47 PM
I am not pro-life, but I wouldn’t kid myself into thinking her view of abortion is “nuanced.” She’s very much pro-life, and I’m good with that. She has the courage of her convictions. Roe is not good law and it needs to be overturned anyway. If Sotomayor can say that the 2nd Amendment doesn’t preclude states or cities from outlawing firearms within their jurisdictions, then why do we think the 14th Amendment would preclude states from curtailing abortion?
This right to privacy nonsense needs to be rolled back. And I say that as a libertarian. These are issues that are best left to the people and their lawmakers to decide, not some group of nine inviolate justices “making policy” from the bench.
NoLeftTurn on July 14, 2009 at 1:49 PM

kg598301 on July 14, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Maybe. But I am hoping not to offend the many PETA members who comment on HA.
It may have already been said, but as I recall, Obama made great hay during the campaign that his visions of a green economy would create three million new jobs. I wonder, after taking into account the job loss resulting from cap-and-trade, whether his three million figure was gross or net.

How amazing it is that these women in the television and print media, (conservative and liberal), hate Sarah Palin so much. They still act like they are in high school, hating the pretty, smart, popular girl, just because they feel threatened by her. There is just no other explanation for it. Even if she didn’t go to an Ivy League elitist university, and if they disagree with her political stance, she is obviously more intelligent then most of them, and they know it. They are just jealous, and they hate her because she has it all, a great husband, (good looking too), a beautiful family, and a great career, (that she worked hard for). Reading and listening to all this crap makes me feel like I am a teenager again, watching the mean girls go after the prom queen, it is patently absurd!

I certainly don’t mind the dialogue, just a little confused here. I would agree with you that she doesn’t need to blindly force her agenda, and I think the health benefits for domestic partners issue in AK demonstrates she can do that. But AnninCA keeps saying on different threads that she doesn’t think Palin is totally invested in prolife issues, which is what I was responding to.

Ah, found the earlier comment.
I agree that I think Palin can express her opinions/convictions, but govern out of a shared ethos and sense of what is best for the country. I think if she runs, she’ll lay her cards on the table in terms of what issues she sees as central to good governance, likely including a sane energy policy, free enterprise, and shrinking govt. I think she’ll make no bones about her social con opinions, but will make it as clear as possible (despite the media filter) that she has no intention of ruling as a “theocratic Christianist.”

Egads, I made the mistake of checking on the HuffPots and they’re in full Palin freak-out mode. And for all the people giving Ed hell, just remember that Ed was right on this issue just like he was right on a lot of other issues.
BTW, the talk of Sarah Palin supporting cap and trade in the past is like comparing apples and oranges. Even the energy plans that McCain supported were nothing like the nonsense policy Obama is supporting.
The point to this policy and the health care policy is simply to make people more dependent on government. It has nothing to do with energy conservation or finding real alternatives to fossil fuels like more nuclear plants…none of that. It is a farce. Palin sees that.

That is not fair. The GOP has done a pretty good job of standing against this whole cap and trade nonsense. Guys like Pence in the House and Inhofe in the Senate have been very consistent in their opposition.

Turning the state over to her Lt. Gov. was a stroke of genius for Palin. This allows an ally to advance the agenda for Alaskans, while allowing her to concentrate on getting her monetary obligations properly dealt with (legal fees), her family life squared away (she’s still a mom, folks), and arming herself for battle to safe the rest of the country (and indirectly, the planet).
She doesn’t have to win ALL of the Democrats, just enough of the moderate ones, and a good chunk of Independents, should she decide to go for the Presidency.

I know I’m revealing my hillbilliness, but what the hell is brie? I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never seen it. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.

She didn’t have her own baby either- remember? ROFL!

But, but…. Ed told me that Sarah was FINISHED since she quit her day job. So this CAN’T be news!!!!

It’s some clammy cheese that is often found in the trunk of Prii on its return trip from Whole Foods.

Wow, what a riot! So original — your parents must be proud.
Try the Help Wanted section of WaPo while you’re weeping over Palin’s piece.

It looks like perhaps a cappella commented, AnninCA responded to that comment, I responded to AnninCA, and a cappella responded to me. At least, that’s my charitable view of the misunderstanding.

If this keeps up with the ethics complaints, the Cuda will pass by the 17-0 ‘72 Dolphins.
She’s at 15-0 or 16-0 already.
One more and Don Shula and Mercury Morris will be hitting MSNBC and CBS and talkin about how their record meant more in the old days and that she’s just lucky.

Ed’s take on Palin’s self-inflicted wounds was “Surprisingly Good.” Or so he thinks. And he can eat that line till the lady hosts her 2013 White House Tea Party.
leftnomore on July 14, 2009 at 6:03 PM
I was on the SarahPAC thread last night. Guntotinglibertarian isn’t a Sarah fan (likes Rudy) and isn’t pro-life, but I don’t think he supports Obama’s policies. Unless I’m woefully mistaken, his remarks above were intended to be sarcastic.

Trolls, please — better material! The grade-school, nanny-nanny boo-boo, insults only work on dim bulb Democrats.

What is Palin going to do with the children?
Is she going to hire a babysitter?
