Palin on cap-and-trade: Job-killer
posted at 10:11 am on July 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin takes on Barack Obama on his home turf, so to speak, by penning an op-ed in the Washington Post. On Sunday, Obama’s own Post column attempted to defend his stimulus package and plead for patience, promising that new jobs will arrive over the next two years. Two days later, Palin assails his cap-and-trade bill as a job killer that will wipe out many more jobs than Porkulus could ever create:
American prosperity has always been driven by the steady supply of abundant, affordable energy. Particularly in Alaska, we understand the inherent link between energy and prosperity, energy and opportunity, and energy and security. Consequently, many of us in this huge, energy-rich state recognize that the president’s cap-and-trade energy tax would adversely affect every aspect of the U.S. economy.
There is no denying that as the world becomes more industrialized, we need to reform our energy policy and become less dependent on foreign energy sources. But the answer doesn’t lie in making energy scarcer and more expensive! Those who understand the issue know we can meet our energy needs and environmental challenges without destroying America’s economy.
Job losses are so certain under this new cap-and-tax plan that it includes a provision accommodating newly unemployed workers from the resulting dried-up energy sector, to the tune of $4.2 billion over eight years. So much for creating jobs.
In addition to immediately increasing unemployment in the energy sector, even more American jobs will be threatened by the rising cost of doing business under the cap-and-tax plan. For example, the cost of farming will certainly increase, driving down farm incomes while driving up grocery prices. The costs of manufacturing, warehousing and transportation will also increase.
The ironic beauty in this plan? Soon, even the most ardent liberal will understand supply-side economics.
Unfortunately, the ironic beauty will only become apparent after cap-and-trade does severe damage to our economy and standard of living. Even then, the most ardent liberals won’t admit a problem at all, because the push for cap-and-trade has other motivations than just lowering CO2 in the atmosphere. Those pushing cap-and-trade and making hysterical pronouncements about having only 96 months until the end of the world want to push people into statist control of energy production. They’re not worried about falling standards of living; most of them think we exploit too many natural resources anyway, and that less energy and less of everything would bring about the kind of harmony they desire — and want to impose on everyone else.
We need to make all of this clear. Cap-and-trade rations energy production, which means there will be less of it for a long time. Alternatives are not ready for the kind of mass production that would allow a complete replacement of energy, and probably won’t be for decades, if ever in some cases (notably wind power, as GreenChoice showed and as T. Boone Pickens finally realized). That means a lower standard of living that will impact America regressively, with the lowest income earners getting hit the hardest. The drain on the economy from high energy prices means less jobs and higher retail prices for goods and services, again a regressive consequence of energy rationing.
Obama and his Utopian allies promise that government will help close the gap by offering more services to the unemployed and the poor at the expense of the “rich”. What will that do? It will further handicap the economy by keeping capital out of the markets. Even worse, it will vastly expand the dependent class in America who have to go on the dole to survive. And many of those ardent liberals will be pretty happy with that outcome, too.

Well, WE all know it’s a hugely damaging bill. What will it take for liberals to finally realize that no, you don’t have a magical bubble that protects you from liberal policies, once enacted.
YOU will pay more taxes.
YOU will likely lose your job.
YOU will have to pay for someone else or go galt.
YOU will have to wait in line for hours at the clinic.
YOU will not be able to afford to feed your family.
YOU will not be able to afford to heat your house.
What part of this is not making sense?
Oh, that’s right. You just listen to the Utopia part, not the details. Some snake-oil salesman tells you he’s gonna make it a perfect world and you say okay, please have at it. Damn the “details”.
If any liberal who voted for the current congress or Obama ever, ever complains about healthcare or energy costs…

On a slightly more serious note, this is exactly what I was hoping for when she announced her resignation. That it signaled she was leaving Alaska so she could take on Obama and the Dems and their insane agenda. The libs will of course attack the messenger, but with each passing day it’s become more difficult for them to defend what Obama’s doing.

Those pushing cap-and-trade and making hysterical pronouncements about having only 96 months until the end of the world want to push people into statist control of energy production.
We probably have less than 96 months until the end of the world if this bill passes. Food would have to be rationed because we are burning food supplies for fuel. Fuel and water would have to be rationed and transportation would probably be severely restricted.

When liberals and RINOS go ballistic against Sarah, it’s because her message is sound.
Cap and tax is a job and economy killer. People need this message out. Sarah is the one to do so. Boehner and some in congress have been good on this issue, but we need someone with more of a national spotlight, and Sarah is filling that gap.
Kudos to her on a great article.

the_nile on July 14, 2009 at 10:28 AM
This is all about, as Owl Gore said this weekend, GLOBAL GOVERNANCE. Starting with the United States, completely destory the economy and the energy supply.
It’s not that Obama, et al. don’t know what they’re doing, they do. If this sham goes through, and “if” he wins re-election, we’ll look like North Korea in eight years.
That’s what Palin needs to also say.
moonsbreath on July 14, 2009 at 10:28 AM
No, you miss my point. I’d much rather discuss what Palin wrote vs the fact that she can write. Seems the thread is already becoming another Palin bashing/defending thread, rather than a convo about what she wrote. I think it’s a great article and I love that she’s already going after bambi.
Thunderstorm129 on July 14, 2009 at 10:28 AM
And since she is no longer in office she has nothing to lose really, only to gain more credibility and respect, and fight the good fight. That’s what is so awesomely awesome about her strategery to resign.
Brat on July 14, 2009 at 10:29 AM
This is Sarah at her more dangerous; if she isn’t a candidate, then any personal aspects of her life take on far less significance than what she has to say. And what she has to say- and the way she says it- is a real threat to the liberal agenda. It strikes right to the heart of the issues; expressed by and for all the hockey/soccer moms out there.

I knew this is how she would re-introduce herself to the american people again. As I said before, she is greatly concerned about Alaska’s future and knows that energy production is a way for them to be more self-sufficient. She is also keenly aware of the national security impacts of reliance on foreign sources of energy. She has worked hard to bring domestic production to fruition in Alaska for the good of the state and the country as a whole. She is not about to sit back and watch Obama flush it away.
A lot of the comments on the Washington Post’s website are accusing Sarah of being too dumb to pen the article. They obviously know little of her background. I’m sure most of them do not know that she was on the oil and gas commission in Alaska prior to running for governor.
She needs to ignore her critics and forge ahead with her ideas for energy independence because I believe most people agree with her ideas on this issue.
KickandSwimMom on July 14, 2009 at 10:46 AM

ITA and it’s stuff like this that excites me about her and makes me happy she resigned from her job. Sitting in the governor’s mansion with no way to really speak out against Teh One’s insane policies, she was just a sitting duck for all of the personal attacks. It will be a lot harder to accuse her of being stupid and uninformed when she’s penning insightful pieces like this. The liberals will look like jackasses carrying on about what a hick she is, about her daughter’s getting “knocked up,” or making evil Photoshops of Trig when she is making the rounds on the Sunday morning talk shows nailing Obama to the wall on his record. It will just make the independents and moderates on both sides watch and think, “Gosh, if this is all they’ve got to counter her with, she must be telling a lot of hard truths. Maybe she’s not so clueless after all.”
I’d love to see her address Teh One’s promise to be patient, that the jobs are coming over the next two years! That’s cold comfort to someone without a job NOW and a family to support. I would think someone of her modest background (middle class, small business owner, raising a family) would be in an excellent position to tell His Excellency, “Um, sorry Barry, but that’s just not good enough. Try harder.”

SP supported everything JM did during the election, as a VP should. That doesn’t mean she personally supports those things. The only real exception was ANWR… because she had been so vocal about ANWR prior to being selected, it would look ridiculous for her to all of a sudden be against it.
That being said, square this circle: How can someone support massive increases in drilling for oil (ANWR) at the same time as supporting C/T? Really doesn’t make sense, unless I am missing something. Seeing as how she has always been very outspoken in her support for drilling in ANWR, I doubt very seriously she has ever been a fan of C/T.
