Obama: Hey, we’re going to keep losing jobs

posted at 4:30 pm on July 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

No worries. It’s only because unemployment lags behind recovery or “stabilization” or whatever sunny euphemism he’s using now to spin the nightmare. It’s probably just a quirk of my online reading habits but I’ve stumbled across more pessimism about the economy today than I’ve seen since the stimulus passed in February, which makes me wonder if public confidence in The One’s blueprint is starting to deteriorate in earnest. Start with Mort Zuckerman’s harrowing op-ed about how things are much worse than they seem, with the possibility of sustained unemployment at 11 percent ahead. Then read Politico’s description of the “widespread disdain” it found when it surveyed economists from across the spectrum about Obama’s growth projections. Proceed to Time magazine, normally a reliable cheering section for Barry O, where the stimulus is now being pronounced an early failure. And cap it off with new poll numbers from Gallup showing a six-point downward swing on whether the economy’s getting better in just one month. The good news for Obama is that the early rosy projections will be forgiven once things really do start to turn around. The bad news is that blowing $787 billion on a non-fix won’t be.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering where leftist spin is headed next, look no further than Robert Reich. Turns out we can’t blame Obama for failing to kickstart a recovery — because the economy will never recover.

Can Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Reid lose their jobs?

Because ironically, that’s when the recovery starts.

PimFortuynsGhost on July 14, 2009 at 4:35 PM

Of course, creating or saving jobs means losing them, first. Just like global warming necessitates record lows, first.

All of the bases are covered.

We have only to believe in Obama.

OhEssYouCowboys on July 14, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Uh. Planning the economy in 2-year plans is tough. Uh. Let’s tax the rich!

clorensen on July 14, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Huh, not one mention in the article about how to PUT more money back in the pocket of consumers.

And what the hell does “rising carbon in the atmosphere” have to do with an article about a bad economy?

catmman on July 14, 2009 at 4:36 PM

I believe it’s deliberate.

If so, then Obama is going to try to use the crisis he creates to transform the USA in to a full-blown radical socialist country, and keep heading for “global governance.” He may even use the crisis to adopt a new global currency.

If not, then I’ll breathe a big sigh of relieve that he’s just incompetent, angry and/or insane.

Daggett on July 14, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Uh. He misses TOTUS, too. Man, he is a great speaker and an intellectual giant.

clorensen on July 14, 2009 at 4:37 PM

So if the recession “stabilizes”, and we still don’t have any job growth – that was all according to plan?

catmman on July 14, 2009 at 4:37 PM

From the Robert Reich link:

Problem is, consumers won’t start spending until they have money in their pockets and feel reasonably secure. But they don’t have the money, and it’s hard to see where it will come from. They can’t borrow. Their homes are worth a fraction of what they were before, so say goodbye to home equity loans and refinancings. One out of ten home owners is under water — owing more on their homes than their homes are worth. Unemployment continues to rise, and number of hours at work continues to drop. Those who can are saving. Those who can’t are hunkering down, as they must.

Well lets see Robert what could your dear leader do so that consumers will have a little more money in their pockets? How about a TAX CUT?

Brat on July 14, 2009 at 4:37 PM

13% is a possibility. BTW, the way the government measures unemployment is kind of suspect anyway, the real effects could reach that of 20% unemployment. It’s going to get worse first. This fall we’ll see a 2nd significant drop in the market. Does Obama really think he can disprove the laws of economics? We have to undergo a complete realignment before we can improve, the administration is making it worse. We’re about to face a lost decade similar to what Japan experienced. We won’t see real growth for some time.

not to mention increasing carbon in the atmosphere

That really made me lol.

The good news for Obama is that the early rosy projections will be forgiven once things really do start to turn around.

I partly agree with Reich: we may never recover. But I disagree with him about inevitability–Obama has done nothing and contemplates doing nothing to improve the situation.

What happens when his lower-class supporters realize that his promises of a chicken in every pot are going to materialize?

BuckeyeSam on July 14, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Mr. Reich: Problem is, why take the considerable and increasing risks to hire folks when the House leadership and administration want to confiscate any benefits to the risk taker?

clorensen on July 14, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Does Obama really think he can disprove the laws of economics?

Hey, he has Congress on his side… he figures he can repeal those laws and replace them with ones that work with the command-economy he has in mind.

What a “gloomy Gus”! Why, just yesterday I was watching a program on how another Brilliant Leader handled two problems with the same project. Comrade Stalin employed hundreds of thousands of his worshipers building an 80 mile shipping canal, complete with locks to cross a mountain range. STALIN! Now THERE was a leader who knew how to deal with unemployment! And I’ll bet Barack Hussein Obama is a secret admirer of the man FDR called, “Uncle Joe”.

Obama doesn’t want it to recover. He abhors capitalism and is doing everything he can get away with to undermine it.

ProfessorMiao on July 14, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Employment isn’t a lagging indicator. It’s not the first to show a change but the 2nd — The number to watch is work hours per week which now stands at about 32. Employers will start adding work hours before they add new employees which follows shortly behind. It’s far easier to add hours than to hire people. So track non-farm payrolls, which are now shrinking.

As with stuff like the recession began in 2007, which it did not according to official government figures it started Q3-2008, liberals like to say unemployment is a lagging indicator it is not.

Capital investment would be a lagging indicator. The growth in the job market is overwhelmed by things like those unemployed that sit on the side lines until conditions improve, then join the numbers when they think things are getting better. The way the job accounting works, the current numbers don’t include such major factors as these. The real unemployment now stands at about 15.7% according to the BLS. By the jiggered accounting today the BLS raised the number to 9.7%. If you used the 15.7% number it would.

The Precedent already explained that. Congress passed the Porkulus 23 minutes too late. Otherwise, we would have recovered by now, but they screwed it up.

progressoverpeace on July 14, 2009 at 4:50 PM

At his first press conference as President, Obama said that he should be judged first and foremost on jobs. So, from that perspective the stimulus was a complete failure.

Also, what is all this nonsense that the economy turned out to be worse than they thought? Does nobody else remember the fearmongering?

Remember, it was going to be a “catastrophe” if government didn’t do something. It was the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. We didn’t even have time to let Congress read the bill, it was so urgent that they had to act right away. They knew how bad it was and if they didn’t then they were lying to us then.

It’s only because unemployment lags behind recovery or “stabilization” or whatever sunny euphemism he’s using now to spin the nightmare.

Somebody cheer me up. I’m a baby boomer and I’m watching the healthcare steamroller rushing toward me, crushing everything in its path. I’m scared for my kids and their kids. And I’m scared for my husband and me. I didn’t expect to live my last years terrified of my own government.

It’s always fun to ridicule the idiot Leftists, it doesn’t help, but it’s fun anyways.

I also have to agree with your sentiments.

I saw that yesterday at Gateway Pundit. Can’t understand why it’s not on every blog. It definitely needs a wider circulation. I sent it to Ace, maybe he’ll put it up.

There was some other snub video about two months ago with just a single snub, this video is far funnier. I had to go to the conservative Illinois news blog (illinoisreview.com) to see it first.
