AP: You know who’s looking like a GOP frontrunner right now? Mike Huckabee
posted at 8:26 pm on July 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
What color is the sky in your world, AP?
Huckabee’s value as a presidential candidate, however, has gotten a boost primarily from the downfall of others within the Republican Party. Admissions of affairs by Nevada Sen. John Ensign and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, both considered at one time potential GOP contenders, have helped Huckabee.
In other words, the Baptist minister with a covenant marriage is starting look a lot better by comparison.
Huckabee may also get some help from Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s surprise announcement that she’ll step down as governor, midway through her first term, later this month. It’s unclear whether the former Republican vice presidential nominee’s announcement is a prelude to a 2012 bid, or an exit from politics entirely.
Huckabee says he’s still a fan of Palin, but questioned the Alaska governor’s move.
“Well, it’s a risky strategy, and nobody knows whether it’s going to pay off or not,” Huckabee said on “Fox News Sunday” earlier this month. “And even if she did get out, primarily because of a feeling of being chased, that’s not going to stop if she continues in politics. The only way that stops is for her to completely exit the stage and the spotlight.”
I like to goof with you guys about him being the nominee because I know it (inexplicably) torments you, but seriously: Assuming Romney runs, which is a near certainty, give me a scenario in which Huck tops him for the nomination. He’ll have his strongholds — Iowa, South Carolina, plenty of other southern states — but Romney will have the coasts, the northeast, lots of the midwest, most of the party bigwigs, all of talk radio, and a huge war chest on his side. He’ll also be seen as the “economy” candidate while Huck is pigeonholed as the social con. And needless to say, if Palin runs and pulls evangelicals away from him, Huck will be lucky to win a single primary. So I repeat the question. How does Huck win the nomination?

See what they did to McCain. Push the candidate you think easiest to beat, and there you have it.

txag92 on July 14, 2009 at 8:37 PM
It would be tough due to the order of the primaries. If the order stays the same in 2012 — Iowa, NH, Wyoming, Michigan to open — Romney would probably win 3 of 4 and have a head of steam before they enter the South.
LastRick on July 14, 2009 at 8:38 PM
If Romney is the nominee, we lose. Huck, a better shot, but we might lose. Palin, a winner.
I say the dark horse, if there is one, for 2012: Rick Perry.
However, as Ann Coulter says, the left knows how to pick our candidates better than we do. When the left goes bat crazy against a republican, that person is perfect. And Palin is that person to defeat Obama.
jencab on July 14, 2009 at 8:38 PM
I voted for Romney in the primaries, but even had reservations about him. His Massachussetts health care system is turning out to be a huge disaster. He did flip-flop on abortion. I never felt really gung-ho about him; more of a “lesser of evils” kind of thing. So, you Romney supporters, how exactly is Huckabee so repugnant compared to Romney? He is good on his feet, quick thinker, excellent debater, seems a bit more populist than Romney who comes across as patrician. I think it’s way too damn early to really know who will come out as a leader!! Just relax about it! Use this energy to do something about the Congressional elections which are coming up first!!
Special K on July 14, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Palin won’t get the Republican nomination. I honestly think she won’t. Unless……..she gets freakin serious by getting knowledgeable on domestic issues and foreign policy. Sly winks and “you betchas’” won’t make her a serious contender. And, like it or not, she’s got a mountain to climb to overcome the “quitter” meme.

Speaking for myself only, what really bugs me about the promotion of Huck in your posts is that it reads like a parody of what many Evangelicals actually believe.
Huck strikes me as insincere, an “Elmer Gantry” kind of guy who trades on his “Baptist preacher” cred to try to reel in social con votes. From my perch, it seems as if you perhaps think he truly represents what Evangelicals look for in a politician. For me at least, not even close.

terryannonline on July 14, 2009 at 8:47 PM
If the race were Romney vs. Huckabee vs. Palin, Romney might win.
But I think formulating how the 2012 primary will work out based on the outcasts and losing VP candidate of the 2008 race is sure to disappoint.
Besides, unless we see Palin slipping in the polls (I don’t recall seeing a post-resignation poll), it would seem that the three are remaining even, despite the economic problems. That can’t be good for Mitt. If even Republicans won’t flock to a successful businessman in an economic downturn, how the heck can he win a national election?
PurpleWombats on July 14, 2009 at 8:47 PM

I couldn’t agree more. If she wanted to be involved in national politics so much she should have either waited until next year and not run for re-election or run for Don Young’s seat to learn the ropes. A lot of what’s happened is not of her doing, but the whole resignation thing just ruins everything as far as I’m concerned. Romney has more experience (the same as Obama, four years) so I would think he would do better to run on that in the primaries if Palin even runs. She’s sweet and down-to-earth, but not really presidential material if she doesn’t know the national issues. That’s something that should be asked of her if she runs. Course the whole Katie Couric thing made me angry because it was just a bunch of gotchyas.
