SarahPAC raises $733,000 in first six months of 2009; Update: Rush wonders about third-party run

Actually, that’s only a five-month total since the PAC wasn’t up and running until the end of January. By comparison, Romney’s PAC raised $1.4 million through the end of May, but then fundraising is pretty much Mitt’s full-time gig these days and he already has a polished team around him left over from the primaries. Let’s see what happens in the second half when he and Palin go toe-to-toe.
The most intriguing detail from Politico’s report:
The majority of the money raised by SarahPAC so far has come in the form of “unitemized contributions,” meaning donations of less than $200 each. PACS are not required to name those small donors in their filings with the FEC. The remaining money came through more than 700 different $200-plus contributions made by donors from all around the United States.
According to its FEC records, SarahPAC’s biggest expenditure during the reporting period was the more than $103,000 it spent on EDonation.com, a Virginia-based firm that specializes in online fundraising.
Not surprisingly, it sounds like she’s going to follow The One’s lead and turn her support among the base into a cash machine via small donations. In fact, one of the co-founders of Team Sarah has an op-ed in the Examiner today urging her to do exactly that. The only problem: Obama didn’t raise most of his money that way. In fact, percentage-wise, he raised less from contributions under $200 than Bush and Kerry did in 2004. What made him a fundraising juggernaut capable of taking down the Clinton machine was the small money he raised combined with his ability to peel off big donors and big party names from Billary. If Palin runs a true outsider campaign in 2012 and tries to win on the strength of the base alone, she risks being overwhelmed by Romney vacuuming up the big money from party chieftains. Which is to say, even an outsider needs “insiders.” Help her, Fred Malek, you’re her only hope!
Exit question: I’m told Glenn Beck was yelling about a third-party on the radio this morning, a subject that’s been on my mind lately. So choose, bearing in mind that a split conservative vote greatly benefits The One. See, e.g., Clinton’s two victories.
Update: He knows third parties are sure losers but the thought of a “true conservative” faction clearly has him intrigued.
When I watched her speech, when she announced that she was leaving the governorship of Alaska, I didn’t hear the word Republican mentioned once. If I’m Sarah Palin and I’m conservative — Republican Party’s been just as mean-spirited to her as the Democrats have. A lot of them have, a lot of Republican media, a lot of the so-called conservative media have been. I don’t know if she’s going to campaign for conservative Democrats but if she believes that conservatism is the way to go. The one thing that does slightly worry me about this is this whole third party business. Yeah, it’s remote but it’s still a possibility out there and there are a lot of people pushing a third party and that’s — Third parties, they lose, they just lose. Third parties never end up with a congressional or Senate candidates. It’s just not the way to go. We’ll save that for later if that actually begins to transpire, we see it beginning to transpire.

Once again proving why you’re too smart to live in NYC. How’s that double-wide doing? Gotcher shag rug all installed and everything?
And by the way, illegitimacy and welfare dependence are well-represented in small towns and rural areas, too.
Got the ring job on that Chevy done?

It’s the truth, She came home from work and all these kids started bothering her…Instead of learning about a strategic way to force North Korea’s hand, she was instead warming trig’s milk or reading a stupid bedtime story to piper.

I like Rush but even his bottom line is the win.
It’s not going to be easy – but we really need to abandon the GOP and find another party. Third parties require an opportunity in the form a dynamic personality to catalyze them. Sarah Palin is such a personality. She may not be the party’s first Presidential nominee – she may never be a Presidential nominee. Personally – I don’t think it’s Palin’s goal to BE President. She could easily become the engine behind a new party though.
Look – people who believe Mitt is the savior are sadly mistaken. He’s beholden to the Ayatollah’s – who convinced him last year to jump out of the primaries. Mitt is NOT a fighter. If he were – he would not have so easily allowed RINO McCain to take the party from Conservatives. When the chips were down – Mitt was not there fighting for the soul of the party for Conservatism – he was there surrendering it to the RINO’s.
Mitt is a politician – through and through.
Another angle I’ll throw out there is that it’s doubtful Mitt will survive the media scrutiny. The media didn’t really get a chance to work a number up on Mitt Romney last year – so when they finally do get around to slinging mud on him in 2012 – his campaign is going to struggle with fending them off. There is MUCH fertile ground for the media to make hay of … his flip-flopping on the issues … his Mormon faith – and expect to see a lot of “weirdness” thrown about concerning his Mormonism – and Mitt will have to fight every single drop of that mud.
By contrast – Palin has been vetted in the media – who went nuclear on her very early. It’s reasonable to say that the media have expended all of their credibility on trashing Palin – and really have nothing left.
But – if Palin goes third party inn 2012 – I anticipate her media coverage will be a lot more favorable. The media will play her up because they will know she’s drawing votes away from Mitt.
Mitt Romney is a GOP Ayatollah. Of the same family of Ayatollahs that refused to FIGHT the Democrats over safeguards on Fannie and Freddie. The same family of Ayatollah’s that voted for bigger government and more debt. The same family of Ayatollah’s that has not done a damn thing about the looming train wrecks of Social Security and Medicare.
Also – the Ayatollah’s treatment of Palin (a member of the “Walmart” GOP constituency) … proves to me that they don’t care about working men and women who have been voting Republican. Sarah Palin and Todd made $130,000 in 2006 and this puts her in MY Socio-Economic group. I don’t expect the Ayatollah’s to kow-tow to her or treat her like a Queen – but considering the fact that she is talented and liked by the base – yet they continue to trash her …
That tells me they not only disdain Palin …
They disdain all Walmart Republicans … like me.
I’m sorry – it’s folks like us that make the GOP a major party. If they’re going to crap on us – if they are going to ignore our wishes …
Time for another party.

I’m all for a 3rd party. Real change has to start somewhere. If a real conservative party would be formed and could peal away some high profile congressmen for 2010 like Ron Paul and Jim DeMint and a couple governors like Jindal and Perry it could gain some legs for 2012. I’m sick of Republicans like Lindsey Graham and Charlie Crist.
cadams on July 13, 2009 at 8:26 PM
Boy, am I gonna be hated for this:
In a way, there’s a certain sad truth in what you say. Sarah Palin, unlike, say a Hillary Clinton or a Sonia Sotomayor or a Michelle Obama, neglected to pursue an affirmative-action Ivy-League education and acquire a politician husband who could go out and steal enough money to provide for nannies (legal or otherwise) and tony private schools so that she could pursue her own single-minded political career unencumbered by the cares of every-day mommylife.
That’s one of the reasons real people love her.
And I do love her for that, too.
guntotinglibertarian on July 13, 2009 at 8:27 PM
Gosh, I am humbled and chagrined by your thoughtful, dispassionate answer.
And by the way, I don’t live in NYC anymore. I live in Marin County, California, which is even richer than NYC, so rim jobs here probably cost more than the mortgage payment on your double-wide.

Good questions. I do hope SCOTUS overturns Roe, leaving states to decide abortion, so the president’s position matters. It also matters in decisions about federal funding of abortions (foreign and domestic) and abortion legislation (that can be signed or vetoed).
Not every state would keep abortion legal if given the choice.
But long-term, my hope is not so much in a political solution as it is in the conscience of the nation changing on abortion, as the conscience of Britain changed about slavery in the 1800s.

Why do you think she hates working in the state’s capital?
Don’t you think the fact that it takes her 4 hours and a half to get back to home to her children..
Don’t you think she is hurting inside after watching her daughter be mocked and joked about nationwide and having her daughter’s ex talk about sex on some black bimbo’s show?
It’s Bristol’s fault that Palin is probably suffering from depression and the stress got to her.
It’s all Bristol’s fault for being a fill in the blank..
You are the Governor’s daughter and you should know better.
Palin is the victim in all of this.

Fred doesn’t do antyhing much anymore. Even while sitting in Virginia he has done very little in the Virginia Governor’s race. He’s a big talker and does very very little. I can name 20 people who can raise more money in one day than Fred can in 2 weeks. Sarah definitely does not need Fred Malek!!! What a joke.

I have little doubt that I would be delighted with most policies of a Palin administration.
I just doubt that she can win.
Feminists and single moms hate her. And the MSM has done a fabulous job of putting together the sorts of indelible memes that moron just love to parrot, endlessly: dumb beauty queen, wolf killer, I-can-see-Russia, $150,000 wardrobe, bible-thumper, creationist.
All unfair, even libelous. But morons love smirking while they say that crap…and they each have as many votes as you or I do.
I hope I’m wrong, but I’ve just been shocked to see the level of hatred a lot of women have for her. Way uglier than anything I ever saw for Reagan. Maybe even uglier than Bush Derangement Syndrome, because at least Bush got credit for keeping us safe for 8 years.
If she can turn that around, she’s a bona-fide political genius. We shall see.
guntotinglibertarian on July 13, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Well, I’ve never killed a baby; never would. But I am content to leave that between God and anyone who chooses that path. On the other hand, if my state could outlaw abortion that would be fine with me. I just don’t like it being a Federal issue. A Federal government powerful enough to outlaw abortion is powerful enough to outlaw any number of things.

I read the book not too long after I saw the movie for the first time — but that was about 25 years ago, and I’ve seen the movie 30 or 40 times since then, so all of my memories are about the movie. Re Karl Rove, he has a Hagen-ish look about him — doesn’t the conservative movement have any junkyard dogs like Bob Beckel or James Carville? At the risk of mixing my movie metaphors, a guy that understands that when they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue? OK, while I’m on a roll, here’s a third movie metaphor: a guy like Geoffrey Rush’s Walsingham from Elizabeth. Probably the most apt of my three metaphors, seeing as we’re talking about the woman who would be queen — or at least kingmaker.

I never understood Rove’s reputation.
Under Reagan, we had massive landslides. Even Bush 1 cleaned Dukakis’ clock big-time.
Then, after the Clinton era, Rove is celebrated for squeaking out little, teeny cliff-hangers and we lose both houses. Where’s the beef?

Obama will be able to raise that much after a half hour with his sycophants in Hollywood.

Before this link degraded into insults and rim-job references, some of us were talking about third party potential.
I agree Jimmy D (nice handle, by the way;) it can’t be good. A third party must build from the bottom to succeed.
A set of carefully defined “first principals,” the ability to connect with people, and a solid organization will let a conservative take a leadership position with conservatives. This will bring the Republican party “back on board.”

Well, how’s that working out for them in Afghanistan?
I’ll stick with my AR-15, HK-91 and my Mossberg 835.

Yeah, and how much do you think that ass-kissing bow to the Saudi king will be worth?

Thanks. We gotta keep their memories and history alive. They were great men. Our current best are over in Afghanistan right now.
Yep, gotta win at the grassroots level for third paty to succeed. The vast electorate is so uninvolved, it will be very tough to get that majority attention.
I can never join these threads early enough. Living in CA, and doing real work always gets in the way.

Sorry, had to go and chase a coon from under my double wide and tell my daughter that she could NOT go to Gun’s Advanced RJ Studies…..
It is interesting to discuss 2012, but we really need to be concentrating on 2010. This is going to be the crown jewel, to reverse obama’s agenda and control the purse strings to pass lower taxes and get this country back on track.
I want to hear what Sarah’s ideas are, what her stance is on issues. I want her to raise the level of our candidates that we have to choose from. I want to hear conservative ideas and values, not mishy mashy, I am just mouthing the words so you will pick me….like we had on 2008.
But, 2010 looms large and the WH and Congress will be doing everything they can to “buy” their party seats with the stimulus/porkulus money. It will all be spent to make sure the dems keep their seats. We need to be able to fight against that.

Pfft! Hollywood guns!
You must have SOMETHING that works in the swamp without jamming no?

In no particular order….
1. Re-read the book; it’s well worth it – I do, every 10 years or so.
2. Haven’t seen Elizabeth yet.
3. Looks aside, Rove’s instints appeared solid. He took George W. Bush through 2 elections that were thought to be un-winnable. Recall that Gore was always thought to be the front runner in 2000, and that Kerry looked like he would win a narrow victory in 2004.

I keep thinking we need a Contract With America, v2010. Problem is, the Ken dolls in the GOP seem to be incapable of communicating such a thing. And, frankly, they don’t have the stones that Newt and the others had back in 1994.
But clearly, just sitting around and rubbing our hands in gless as Obammy’s poll numbers drop is suicidal. You don’t win elections by saying, “See! We told you so, you dumb asses!”
Lately it seems like we’re going down the same road the Dems were in 2003-2007 when they just couldn’t wait for more bad news out of Iraq. It ill behooves us to sit around and say, “Man! I sure hope unemployment is up to 11% by year-end!”.
