Obamateurism of the Day

Barack Obama has insisted that the US has no right to “meddle” in the Iranian presidential election, but apparently that’s more of a guideline than a rule. No, I’m not talking about Honduras, but instead the upcoming national elections in Germany. When Angela Merkel answered a question at a press conference by referencing the elections, Obama put on his prognosticator’s hat and declared her the winner:
With less than three months until Germany goes to the polls to choose a new leader, US President Barack Obama believes Chancellor Angela Merkel is a shoo-in for re-election, according to a report that will be published on Monday.
Walking to a joint press conference on June 26, Merkel told Obama that she “was preparing her election campaign”, according to news magazine Spiegel, citing footage captured by public television channel ZDF but only partially released.
Turning to Merkel with a grin, Obama is quoted as saying: “Oh, you’ve already won. I don’t know you’re always worrying.”
Maybe Obama said the same thing to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Merkel laughed out of sheer surprise, but not everyone in Germany thought it was funny:
But for her challenger in the September 27 election, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the reported comments are no laughing matter.
No, he has this odd idea that Germans have to actually go to the polls and vote before other heads of state recognize the winners. For a man who claimed that supporting Iranians protesting over a rigged election was “meddling” rather than defending the basic human rights of expression and self-determination, Obama sure seems comfortable with “meddling” in our allies’ elections.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

He seems quite willing to meddle in Africa too. He meddles in Israel. Someday very soon we will understand good meddling from bad meddling. Ogabe continues to build his resume for re-election. Good.

Yet another example of many that foreign policy is a trainwreck under a filthy liar interested only in changing the domestic agenda to socialism and a SECSTATE who was appointed to appease angry female Democrats without any of the requisite diplomatic skills.
Each and every day, I find myself hoping that things cannnot get worse under the filthy liar in the White House’s bad stewardship. Every day I find myself disappointed.

But even good meddling isn’t done like the way the filthy liar is doing it. There is finnesse to these things and meddling is most always better done through indirect means not getting up in a foreign nation and predicting the outcome of their elections. It would be like Tony Blair meeting with GWB in 2004 and at the presser saying that he was certain that Bush would be around for a second term. Tacky at the very least and “not helpful” to diplomacy with our allies.
On the occasions when meddling is done more bluntly, like it should have been done in both Iran and China where there have been human rights atrocities, the filthy liar should be standing up for the principle not taking sides in the domestic issue per se.

The ears do seem out of alignment with the mouth. As to the brain, I have yet to see any evidence that he’s all that bright. He certainly doesn’t show it in his speeches which are pathetic and never address the issue despite the repeated use of terms like “let me be clear” and “make no mistake.” Other than a Harvard Law degree he earned through affirmative action I’m not even sure I’d classify him as educated, he certainly isn’t learned.

I want to read what the German press is reporting on Obama’s public image in Germany right now. If he’s lagging there as everywhere, his would be the kiss of death.
He was just trying to make nice small talk, no doubt. But note his poor grammar without TOTUS, at least as reported.
Mr. Malleable covers all bases:
1. Merkel’s already won.
2. Obama doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
3. Merkel’s always worrying.

I thought I had read that Obama and Merkel don’t get along. And several of the comments above suggest that Merkel is a conservative.
Any possibility that Obama’s comment and the leaking of the comment could be a deliberate attempt to undermine Merkel in the upcoming election?
Something to think about.

Obama is a street thug whose whole career is based on media image- complete with him joining the broadcasters sometime during the All-Star Game this week (it’s not like the economy is in the tank or there are some issues that might require his attention). He needed the local media in Chicago to get on the radar and from there it has been nothing but image over substance and a media letting him get away with it. I’m not sure he’s aware of the fact that as POTUS, everything you say and do in public gets notice be it making inappropriate comments about domestic issues in Germany or leering at a teenager’s rump in Italy. The White House may set up photo ops of the filthy liar taking his kids out for ice cream but that isn’t his total public exposure. The sooner the bastard learns that, the less damage he will do to our international relations.
As a side note, I’ve got to wonder if such a comment to Merkel is a de facto endorsement or a de facto kiss of death to Merkel’s campaign. Especially among all the militant Muslims running around Germany.
highhopes on July 13, 2009 at 8:54 AM

For Obama to augur that Merkel will win the election is a laugh. Merkel must have been very uncomfortable at that press conference with Obama. Merkel is a smart lady and I’m sure on the surface she took Obama’s assertion of how the Germans will vote three months away in stride. If I were Merkel in that situation I would take Obama off to the side and query him on what basis of special knowledge did he have on the subject of the german peoples mindset. How can Obama know the fixed mental attitude or disposition of the german people? True be told is that he doesn’t in the first place and second he may now have cripled Merkel chances of winning the election. Stop and think about it for a moment, has Obama been right on anything himself since his own inauguration? Obama is a walking talking clusterf*ck and Merkel would be smart to distance herself as quickly as possible away from anything he says in regards to german sovereignty and their national concerns. That forecast by Obama about Merkel has about as much a chance in coming true as former president Bush’s prediction that Hillary was going to be the DNC candidate winner for the 2008 presidential general election. We all know now how that worked out for Hillary, don’t we?
Americannodash on July 13, 2009 at 9:04 AM
But let’s put it into perspective. Germany is at the height of the silly season that precedes political campaigns. It’s a story because the amount of influence in German politics from the US is a sensitive subject.
It also shows that words have consequences and the filthy liar needs to think more and speak less. It’s like his remark about Special Olympics- just a stupid thing to say when you know you are being filmed. The fact of the matter is that the filthy liar is not getting good advice from his team when it comes to foreign affairs. At least the Obama’s showed up with a decent gift for the Pope and not an autographed copy of his book or a “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” DVD. Nevertheless, Obama gets an F- when it comes to dealing with other nations where he isn’t in de facto control of the media.

It’s reverse psychology–by saying she’s already won, Obama’s hoping to get the opposition all worked up so they’ll be more likely to vote AGAINST Merkel. It’s got his kind of childishness written all over it.

She doesn’t like him because she grew up in E.Germany and knows totalitarians. She wouldn’t let him have his big Germany campaign stop in front of the Reichstag. And he doesn’t like her because he recognizes a conservative, and because nobody is allowed not to like him. But he wants to look competent and cozy with world leaders on the int’l stage, so he gladhandles them all, slapping them on the back, etc. He’s pitifully out of his element, and league with merkel 4 sure.

Agreed, a point I made @ Gateway Pundit.
As per militant Muslims in Germany and their take on Obama, hmm.
I read that the various Leftist factions in Germany are irritated by Obama. And that Germany is setting up anti-terrorist efforts to secure safe voting at the election.
I also note that Obama’s first official visit to Africa as POTUS was mutually disrespectful. Obama failed to address the population openly as both Clinton and GWBush did. And the people were disgruntled that their poor economy funded his luxurious reception to which they were not afforded participatory rights beyond standing on the street curb for his drive-by, wearing propaganda t-shirts waving propaganda flags mass produced pro-Obama with funds that should have been devoted to their own population’s well being. After he drove by, they all acted as though nothing happened. He’s a dud to them.

Obama wouldn’t WANT to see Merkel in charge because she’s a conservative. Maybe Obama wants Merkel to become complacent, and risk losing to a Socialist.
Obama also shows here that he doesn’t understand German elections. Germany has a parliamentary democracy, where the Kanzler (Chancellor, the equivalent of a Prime Minister) is elected by the Bundestag (Parliament), not directly by the people. In the last German election, Merkel’s party did not have a majority, but a slightly larger plurality than Gerhard Schroeder’s Socialists, and there was a lot of negotiation (horse-trading) with minor parties with small delegations in Parliament to achieve a majority coalition that would accept Merkel as Chancellor.
If Merkel wants to be re-elected as Chancellor, she needs to campaign not for herself, but for legislative candidates of her party, as well as those of other parties within her governing coalition. Merkel is by no means a shoo-in, unless her party has become much more popular across Germany than it was during the last election. Since Obama’s greatest gift is tooting his own horn, he fails to understand that a Chancellor/Prime Minister in a parliamentary democracy needs to campaign on party policy, not personality.
