NYT: Blogosphere lags behind big media — except for Hot Air

posted at 8:52 pm on July 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I’m amused by (and grateful for) the virtual back slaps we got for this quickie name-check in the Times today, but I don’t think it’s saying what it seems to be saying.

For the most part, the traditional news outlets lead and the blogs follow, typically by 2.5 hours, according to a new computer analysis of news articles and commentary on the Web during the last three months of the 2008 presidential campaign…

The researchers’ data points to an evolving model of news media. While most news flowed from the traditional media to the blogs, the study found that 3.5 percent of story lines originated in the blogs and later made their way to traditional media. For example, when Mr. Obama said that the question of when life begins after conception was “above my pay grade,” the remark was first reported extensively in blogs.

And though the blogosphere as a whole lags behind, a relative handful of blog sites are the quickest to pick up on things that later gain wide attention on the Web, led by Hot Air and Talking Points Memo.

Are we really the quickest? Anecdotally, it seems that the boss beats us to stuff all the time, an advantage compounded by the fact that Ed and I often have posts queued up and are forced to delay new material out of respect for the other guy. Rather, I think this is more of a raw traffic metric: Both HA and TPM are big-traffic blogs, so when they finally get to a story, they have a bit more reach in pushing it out through the political blogosphere than anyone else. To put it another way, when would a heavily trafficked blog not “lead” the coverage a story gets on the political Web?

Exit question: Does “leading” the coverage mean we can raise a cool mil in venture capital like TPM? Sigh.

I received a solicitation from the NY Times with a postage-paid reply envelope. If I just send the envelope back, it will cost the Times about 60 cents. If I stuff it full of paper, it costs the Times over a dollar.

Just saying.

Did the same for Michelle Malkin’s site.

Give me a break. A conservative blog could come out with 100% breaking news and no main stream media is going to pick it up, no matter what the content.

Now on the other hand, many conservative talking heads quote conservative blogs and stories all the time.

progressoverpeace on July 13, 2009 at 9:55 PM

… the study found that 3.5 percent of story lines originated in the blogs and later made their way to traditional media.

Notice the tacit assumption that only if a story makes it to the traditional media, is it validated as real news?!

The alternate, and correct, interpretation is that blogs uncover a whole lot of news that the traditional media won’t cover. And the reason they don’t cover it is that it doesn’t fit the story-line they are trying to sell to us all the time.

C’mon AP! Do you know how many stories you guys cover every day? I refresh this site nearly every thirty minutes, and in that amount of time two new stories are covered. When you add the Headlines section, and now the Green Room, this site covers more topics than anything else out there. In fact you guys are even getting better. I used to muck around NRO, Drudge, and Free Republic as a good picking market to send in tips to you guys, but by the time I see something there, it’s already in the Headlines. William Amos always brings about thirty links to many main site stories, and many others add info like little open source tributaries. Again this site covers everything. Yall produce a great product, encourage a vibrant comment section, and analyze nearly every angle. You should be proud.

Weight of Glory on July 13, 2009 at 9:09 PM

I agree. Bryan would be proud of you all.

Jimmy Doolittle on July 13, 2009 at 9:59 PM

When you have Hot Air and Michelle Malkin being referenced by Rush, Sean Hannity, Mark Levine, Roger Hedgecock, and others on a regular basis ……..

……….. and the critiques by Ed, Allah, and the Green Room countering the MSM bias, then we know we have something special here.

This is Freedom people…….

……. the kind that the Founders could never imagine, but the kind that is fighting back against the tyranny that we are living under today.

Thank you to you all………

Help AP impress his date.

We need a plausible cover identity / job.
Face it, liberal babes predominate in urban area. They are very bigoted against “conservative bloggers.” So what job title could we suggest to AP that would make him the go-to guy for Gunther-style adventure with the native urban population?

Suggestions?

While I’m sure posted this topic for some back slapping, I just want to contribute a bit. I’m a liberatrian and read A LOT of site, from rawstory to huffpo, to drudge, to well you get the idea…this is, by FAR one of the best models for a sit that I’ve seen. There’s a reason you got mentioned, the site IS that good. and it’s better than Michelle’s which isn’t as collaborative and inclusive as this one. AP and ED add their own flavor to it but it doesn’t feel like a partisan site, it feels informative with a classical liberal bent (ed’s more religious) but it resonanates with a lot of people, a lot of republicans, a lot of small government followers, and a lot of voters. If the rep party was smart, it’d tap into networking, sites like this, have facebook tapped into these articles and sending out feeders though such sites.

Sadly, they’re working with failed robocalls and old voters lists for donations. They don’t even realize what Ron Paul accomplished for fund raising, where he resonanated and how to ‘tap that’. They called him a ‘kook’ and lamblasted him for his anti Iraq war stance. You tap the libertarian group before the democrats do and you got a big chance. They can’t stop spending right now, so it’s not THAT HARD. You just need to keep the evangalicals at an arms length to do it.

Don’t sell yourself short. You guys do a great job. You deserve to take a bow once in a while.

Hot Air is a must-read for me for quite a time now. I get the news, I get informed and once in a while, I get to post my comment like now.

Aside from news, information, worthy insights and critical analysis by Ed and Allah, HA also provides me with laughter and, before getalife was banned, plenty of #@$%&*@ moments. The laughter is from witty HA commenters and I thank you very much.

HA is a great read, us regulars know that, and I am pleased that NYT has mentioned that.

Thanks, Ed and Allah for a job well done.

mz.josephine on July 14, 2009 at 1:42 AM

HA is worthless unless it drives a movement. Tea Parties ain’t gonna cut it. The site must be electorally-oriented as well with links to strategies and campaigns. The only site that does it is the sad assimilated The Next Right. But a spin-off this site focus on electing conservatives, and defeating the Left should be a priority.

Ed Laskie on July 14, 2009 at 4:50 AM

I love you guys at Hot Air, but you lag behind Free Republic by about an hour.

The power of FR is that it aggregates news. By having a lot of posters putting up stories from a wide variety of sites, a FReeper can stay up-to-date on a hundred news sources by reading one blog. FReepers from Japan, Australia, India and Europe routinely post from their local media when stories break in their local time, which means you can pick up morning news from the Hindustan Times at 11 PM EST or Le Monde at 3:00 AM.

Only a few stories originate from Free Republic (the Dan Rather TANG forgeries come to mind), but if you want to monitor the world from one site, you could do a lot worse.
