Graham hints to Sotomayor: I’m probably going to vote for you
posted at 1:20 pm on July 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
Don’t be dismayed by the headline. Given the math, confirmation’s a fait accompli; a no vote achieves nothing unless you’re a Republican from a red state up for reelection next year. Rather, appreciate his savvy in painting himself as fair-minded enough to vote for the other party’s nominee and then exploiting that fair-mindedness to feed the Democrats a crap sandwich for their treatment of Estrada and Obama a double-stuffed crap hoagie for his absurd no votes on Roberts and Alito. That was a recurring theme among GOP inquisitors this morning, with Graham landing the hardest shot (not seen here) when he accused The One of having opposed those two in a cynical attempt to appease the leftist base ahead of the 2008 Democratic primaries. Which, of course, is precisely what it was.
Note too his casual reference to the role of Supreme Court justices in “making policy.” I told you that was no big deal when she said it. Prediction: 75 votes.

It’s great to have an opposition party to the Democrats who voice a tinge of regret for voting exactly the way the Democrats want them to.
I mean, it’s the next best thing to having an opposition party who actually oppose the Democrats, not that a thing like that is remotely possible.
Just sayin’.

Yes, the second time I’m kicked in the nuts, “fair-mindedness” kind of goes out the window.
But perhaps the Democrats have kicked the GOP in the nuts enough times, there’s no more nuts to kick. Just a flap of skin where the nuts used to be, years ago.
Which is kind of sad.

Someone needs to pose the argument to Sotomayor that induces that meltdown. Certainly SOMEone in D.C. among the Republicans has SOME idea of what that is.

It was never a goal to “Bork” every nominee the President put up there. It’s pointless…he’ll just choose someone else that’s just as bad…or worse.
The only useful thing the GOP could possibly get out of this is using his choices to show voters what the President stands for and the hypocrisy of the Left.

With apologies to my fellow LindsayGrahamophobes, I can’t find a single thing he said that I disagree with, including his resigned tone. I love that he kicked O’Bonehead in the nuts not once but twice, and that he lectured her so soundly on her stupid racialism. But I really love that he called out the racist Senate Democrats on Estrada.
On balance, I think he had it just right. The other choice is to bluster and rant in a losing cause, and that’s bad form.

JiangxiDad on July 13, 2009 at 1:41 PM
I listened to his speech and though Graham is certainly not a favorite of mine, I thought he did pretty well. It sucks that this is what we get, but I sorta agree that elections have consequences and rewards. It ticks me off to no end when democrats filibuster GOP appointees, just making asses of themselves to play partisan politics, so I don’t condone it if we do it either. But I know I am in the minority here. I don’t like this Sotomayor appointment, but O won and he gets to choose. Unless the appointee has broken some law (basically O’s entire tax-cheating cabinet), then they should probably be confirmed. The GOP has so many battles to fight, that this one, being a foregone conclusion, is not one of the big ones to me. Yes, yes, I know, lifetime appointment, Supreme Court….I get that. She’s bad, but the next one to replace her, should she get turned away, could be worse. And the GOP will get their licks in this week.

Rocks on July 13, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Well, consider this:
Graham said that, barring a meltdown (by Sotomayor), that she’d be confirmed.
So, why not induce the meltdown? Seems plausible, possible, if they just find the inducement. I get the impression that Sotomayor’s like a ripe plum, just ready to burst and she certainly has her buttons based upon her history.
I’d prefer it if the inducement was to confront something in her so-called “decisions” that would most effectively induce her where she is most vulnerable: her ego at being a bigwig smarty. She’s not that smart, she’s proven that she isn’t.
Find that emotional branch, wrench it around, show it for what it is and get the “feelie” activist Leftwinger to act out.

The RINOs are actually more nutless than their liberal soul mates.

I don’t agree that the dems are getting fed a crap sandwich. They absolutely have no shame. Why should Obama’s no votes on Alito and roberts not be thrown repeatedly in his face. The great black father cannot have it both ways. HE set the tone. I am not suggesting a filibuster attempt either. She is going to be confirmed but it pains me to have republicans always trying to be fair when it gets them nothing.
arnold ziffel on July 13, 2009 at 2:02 PM
You’re right. We always take the high road as if that will show how civil we are and expect that the Democrats will reciprocate in kind. Who are we kidding?
Look what Obama did to Roberts and Alito. He didn’t give them the “elections have consequences”, high-road, benefit of the doubt. He didn’t show deference to Bush. Roberts and Alito were non-controversial, brilliant, mainstream judges and Obama still played politics with it.
I’m sure the Republicans will roll over and vote for her and it will be overwhelming. Then the meme will take hold that she was so brilliant and mainstream that she was confirmed overwhelmingly
