Graham hints to Sotomayor: I’m probably going to vote for you

posted at 1:20 pm on July 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

Don’t be dismayed by the headline. Given the math, confirmation’s a fait accompli; a no vote achieves nothing unless you’re a Republican from a red state up for reelection next year. Rather, appreciate his savvy in painting himself as fair-minded enough to vote for the other party’s nominee and then exploiting that fair-mindedness to feed the Democrats a crap sandwich for their treatment of Estrada and Obama a double-stuffed crap hoagie for his absurd no votes on Roberts and Alito. That was a recurring theme among GOP inquisitors this morning, with Graham landing the hardest shot (not seen here) when he accused The One of having opposed those two in a cynical attempt to appease the leftist base ahead of the 2008 Democratic primaries. Which, of course, is precisely what it was.

Note too his casual reference to the role of Supreme Court justices in “making policy.” I told you that was no big deal when she said it. Prediction: 75 votes.

If Graham operated like his Dem counterparts, then his statement would be a mere setup for a vote against her because he could characterize anything he wanted as a “blowup” or game changer: you cheated on your taxes? Vote = no; You supported release of Puerto Rican terrorists? Vote = no. You named your dog “Fluffy?” Vote = no.

I don’t have time to read everyone else’s contributions just yet, so I may not be the first to say it, but how much does anyone want to bet that Sen. Lindsey Grahamnesty is the Republican Presidential candidate that the MSM and the Democrats try to hand pick in 2012?

He is probably the closest pal of McCain and tries to outdo McCain’s “moderation” every time we turn. “Linguini-spined” liberal Republicans are just so last year…

kscheuller on July 13, 2009 at 3:34 PM

What a complete waste of flesh Graham is. Complete waste.

This is why I (and many others) hate RINOs (for all you RINO lovers out there).

What good is voting for a republican if they won’t become the loyal opposition we so desperately need them to be now?

If Mr. Steele (or whoever’s in charge of the GOP) allows that to happen, they can forget me ever voting republican again.

Chaz706 on July 13, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Graham was just on a Q&A appearance with Smith on FOX, said that he found “a lot…(that) he liked” about Sotomayor’s stand on the war (as yet unrevealed to me) and that he thought she “couldn’t be any worse than Souter” so he’s actually sounding like he supports her.

Lourdes on July 13, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Chaz706 on July 13, 2009 at 3:44 PM

This is what the GOP just does not get.

When they behave in deference to the Democrats (out of fear of upsetting the “middle”), they lose GOP voters. People want a party from the GOP who stands up for and about specifics. If we didn’t, we’d be Democrats.

We don’t want another DNC from the GOP. Every time the GOP go for this “must not rock the boat” thing, they lose support from among voters on the Right. The GOP cannot win without the Conservative vote and they lose more and more of that vote with every move they make to the Left.

Lourdes on July 13, 2009 at 3:49 PM

Lourdes on July 13, 2009 at 3:49 PM

You are right the GOP doesn’t get it (they haven’t proved it yet if they have at least) but it leaves us with an ugly choice.

I really wish if the GOP doesn’t shape up a third party emerges… cause that’s the only way liberalism can be defeated. It has to be a strong, unified third party. One willing to see beyond the differences people might have.

Why do I say this: it’s been the Liberal’s goal all along to divide and conquer. Even a 10 year old can understand that it’s easier to defeat a group of people 1 at a time as opposed to all at once.

All these small third parties don’t get it! They don’t cut the mustard. We need to realize that there’s more that can unite us than those things that can divide us.

I’m by no means an idealist, but any one who proclaims that we must be divided because of a need for a ‘pure’ ideology at this point is committing suicide. Granted, I’m still against RINO’s (they aren’t fighting for us… they’re fighting for themselves. Anyone who says otherwise need look no farther than Arlen Specter.) but c’mon. At this point, I don’t care too much for the niceties of etiquitte. I’m willing to vote for someone who will fight for my liberty instead of selling it wholesale.

Everything else is secondary. We can deal with it later once Liberty is secured again for Every American.

Chaz706 on July 13, 2009 at 4:03 PM

..appreciate his savvy in painting himself as fair-minded enough to vote for the other party’s nominee..

Fair-minded enough? Voting for a racist is not “fair-minded”. It’s exactly what I would expect from Grahamnesty though.

FuriousAmerican on July 13, 2009 at 4:04 PM

I watched this tw*t on Shep Smith’s show and it took everything in me not to throw a chair thru the tv. I am so sick of this little queer man being the ‘face’ of the republican party….this is the problem. This asshat is all to willing to bend over for the democrats….we don’t need this on our side of the aisle.
And the fact that he had a problem with Soto’s ‘Wise Latina’ speech was rich…..this is his type of people, La Raza proud and people are bigots because they don’t believe in amnesty…..what a waste of air.

HornetSting on July 13, 2009 at 4:07 PM

I like what Graham did there. It’s not an effective tactic, because the MSM will not give it the attention it deserves, but he does make some excellent points. By voting for Sotomayor he establishes a different standard than that of Obama’s left and he actually respects the original intent of the Senate to provide advice and consent. Unfortunately, in today’s political environment, such actions are wasted. The days of the collegial Senate are long gone.

Jesus Christ, Allah … every time I view one of your posts I turn into a miserable bastard. It’s like you have a gift for spreading misery.

Stickeehands on July 13, 2009 at 4:24 PM

Grahamnesty is another scumbag RINO who has become the face of the GOP and part of the reason the GOP is finished.
REMEMBER when Grahamnesty called anyone who opposed Amnesty for illegal aliens “RACISTS”? How does Grahamnesty find the time to do anything outside of kissing John McCain’s butt?

nelsonknows on July 13, 2009 at 4:40 PM

So, why not induce the meltdown? Seems plausible, possible, if they just find the inducement. I get the impression that Sotomayor’s like a ripe plum, just ready to burst and she certainly has her buttons based upon her history.

Lourdes on July 13, 2009 at 1:48 PM

If you were Lindsay Graham and that was your plan, would you say so in the opening statements? Or would you warn her that she will be called to explain both her injudicious Obamalama philosophy and her racialist statements, and then see if the meltdown comes under questionning?

Jaibones on July 13, 2009 at 5:14 PM
