Writing supposedly conservative columns is what she does, and defending him as “gifted,” “historic,” and so forth is the best support she could have given him.

First, Peggy Noonan did of course support Obama for president. She may not have endorsed him, but she described him in positive terms and lent a lot of support to his credibility.

Describing someone in positive terms now counts as “support?” All Noonan did was acknowledge his strengths as a public speaker and politician. That doesn’t mean she supported him — quite the opposite; she publicly announced she was voting for McCain/Palin. This is the same kind of twisted logic that went after Ace… anything less than a vehement attack on Obama is treated as “support” by the magical thinking brigade who cannot possibly acknowledge the opponent’s strengths.

Second, there’s just not much distinction between “working class” and “middle class.” Who makes, more money: a steelworker or a teacher?

Correct answer: it depends. Teachers only make really good incomes with extensive higher education and experience. So who is more working class? Who is more middle class? What difference does it make in politics?

Now that’s a good point. I do think there’s a distinction to be made between “working-class” and “middle-class,” and I don’t think Noonan is wrong here, but you are right that she’s missing the larger point that Palin was simply not the privileged child of career politicians, born into the political class, and where she fell on the scale beyond that was moot.

That said, isn’t that whole idea a form of class warfare in and of itself? I thought we left that sort of thing to liberals.
