On my desk: The Stoning of Soraya M

posted at 7:02 pm on July 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After a couple of weeks of waiting, I finally received the book The Stoning of Soraya M.: A True Story in the mail today. I’ve written extensively about the film of the same name, and interviewed the producer, director, and one of its actors in attempting to get Hot Air readers into the theaters. While you’re waiting for the film to be shown in your area, be sure to read the book as well. The book authored by Freidoune Sahebjam was first published in 1990, but remains powerful and timely to this day.

From Publishers Weekly in 1993, courtesy of Amazon:

This resonant book portrays the ugliness of fundamentalist Islamic mob justice in Khomeini-era Iran. Sahebjam, an Iranian journalist based in France who has written critically of the regime, returned to his homeland under cover in 1986. While visiting a small town he calls Kupayeh, he learned how an innocent 35-year-old woman had been stoned to death for supposed infidelity. His thorough reporting, based on a further visit to the village, reconstructs Soraya’s life and killing with much dialogue and interior monologue. Soraya gave birth to nine children in 14 years and her husband Ghorban-Ali also turned to prostitutes. He became involved in shady business deals and began to associate with Sheik Hassan, a criminal who was appointed Ayatollah Khomeini’s local representative. When Ghorban-Ali, having fallen in love with another woman, accused his wife of infidelity, villagers lied to aid him and Soraya was left with no support in the town. Her two eldest sons sat on the male tribunal that declared her guilty, and she was stoned by a mob that included her father. This book refuses to let such horror go unremembered.

The story triumphs over Soraya’s murderers every time it’s told.

Clearly the movie is wrong! Muslim fundamentalist men treat their wives and daughters like Princess Jasmine in Alladin! Everyone knows that\

I am going to have to buy the book because the expanded release of the movie still doesn’t include my area. I will buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Finally found out it’s hitting Kansas City Area July 17. Hopefully, as this is the sort of story MrsJamesLee tends to like (historical, true, biographical, etc), I can talk her into seeing it!

A very powerful and moving movie, with two extraordinarily beautiful women.

I hope this movie contributes to that day when the brutal suppression of Muslim women is finally ended.

Sally Fields is no conservative beacon but she was in a movie called ‘Not Without My Daughter’ way back in the day. I remember seeing it as a kid, and though probably not as powerful as Soraya, it did show the sheer lack of respect for women in Iran after the fall of the Shah and the takeover of Islamic fundamentalism. May be a good idea to watch that while waiting for Soraya to come to a theater near you.

I saw the clips on Hannity last night. It looks like it was absolutely brutal. We should not have “talks” with countries that treat their women with such brutality.

Me neither.

I watched a very short part of the clip that showed the actual stoning. I found myself jerking my head back as she was doing. Quit then. Too hard to take. How can people lose their minds to the point where they’ll do this.

I agree. And the fact that she is beautiful makes her stoning all the more tragic.

Just kidding folks. I was just reviving a prior thread that got rather heated; I just want to say that stoning ugly people is bad too, but not quite as bad, alright, it is equally bad.

clnurnberg on July 10, 2009 at 7:15 PM

That is true!

Why are people such Islamophobes!

We all know, and have been taught, that Islam is the Religion of Peace, Love, Compassion, Tolerance, Mercy, Compassion, and Understanding. No Muslim would EVER trump up charges against his own wife, nor would any Muslim ever trump of charges against his own mother.

Furthermore no Muslim would ever take part in condemning a woman to sadistic slaughter like this, nor would a Muslim male ever raise a hand in violence toward a woman. No male would ever stone a woman to death either.

Surely this entire story is fabricated.

Got to be.

In the mean time, members of gutter religions, like Christianity, Judaism, perhaps even Sikhism, Hinduism, Ba’hai, and Buddhism must keep their traps shut and submit to the Religion of Peace, and hasten peace on planet earth.

Ed,

I also recommend anything written by Jean Sasson.
Mayada, Daughter of Iraq: One Woman’s Survival Under Saddam Hussein

And although fiction, First Mate will enjoy and weep when you or her read this one…

A Thousand Splendid Suns

Written by the same author that gave us the gem “The Kite Runner”.

Cheers and thanks for the tip.

Hard to believe that all those “enlightened” chicks on the VIEW (definitely not you Eliz.) aren’t panning this flick. How come Barbara W.? Don’t you have the stomach for it? You hypocritical old bag of flatulence. BTW, where the F is Oprah on this issue? Hmmmm ….. just another lukewarm leftie hypocrite with a pile of dough, but no real guts to stand up to the world’s vermin. And Barbra Streisand’s nowhere to be found!!! Where’s Jane Fonda??? And all the other screeching ditzy NOW broads who relish at the thought of castigating those evil “white males”, but just can’t seem to muster any passion when it comes to condemning the most despicable slime that’s ever inhabited the earth along side civilized human beings. You so-called “ladies” are nothing but phonies and frauds.

StimulateTHIS on July 11, 2009 at 12:19 AM

I will not go see this movie.

Don’t think I could take what I expect will be rampant misogny.

Nor could I take seeing Daddy cast the first stone.

However, I will buy a ticket. Maybe two.

TimBuk3 on July 11, 2009 at 12:25 AM

In Alameda County (California) it is showing at the Shattuck Cinemas

In San Francisco it is showing at the Opera Plaza Cinema

Don’t miss this movie! It is an amazing perspective on the psychology that leads up to the stoning!

The actual stoning scenes are only about 5-10 minutes of the movie. You can close your eyes if you don’t want to see the stoning portion. (But the scenes really aren’t any more violent than what we see frequently on TV.)

The friends that I have recommended this movie to have called me afterwards to thank me.

Seeing this movie is the first step toward putting an end to this evil practice! Evil happens when good people do nothing!

Thanks for the scoop. I am not into violence. I will look the other way when the sick, 7th century Neanderthals start flinging the stones. What a backwards collection of freaks. Their values are not compatible with western civilization, or any civilization for that matter.

Geochelone on July 11, 2009 at 3:08 AM

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was some OTC pharmacological product, such as Immodium, that could cure Islamism gently overnight?

Even better if polls showed that 9/10 western feminists found it highly effective.

This movie was supposed to be shown for one night at my little movie theatre around the corner on July 10th. But at the last minute they moved the date back a week to the 17th.

I really can’t wait to see it.

myrenovations on July 11, 2009 at 10:12 AM

I just saw the movie. I live in Los Angeles and am astounded that it is showing in only a single theatre in the entire LA basin, and a single theatre in the San Fernando Valley.

I strongly recommend the movie. It is one thing to hear about stoning in the abstract. It is quite another thing to see it. They couldn’t have found a better actor to play the part of the husband. You could look into his eyes and truly see the face of evil (although I have no doubt that the actor is a perfectly decent fellow).

The other roles were brilliantly cast as well, from Soriah’s aunt to the widower with whom she was accused of committing adultry.

As wren indicated, the stoning scenes are only small portion of the movie, but it had the same look and feel of the Passion of the Christ. While quite graphic, it was necessary to illustrate the pure depravity of what happened.

I was a little skeptical prior to seeing the movie how they were going to pull off a movie about stoning with a complete storyline that consisted of more than just the scenes of the stoning itself. But they did, and they did it brilliantly. Very well-developed storyline
