Obama caves to Iran on captured Quds forces in Iraq

posted at 9:36 am on July 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

In January 2007, the US captured five Iranians providing assistance to the Shi’ite extremists in the south of Iran killing US soldiers.  The Bush administration identified the five as members of the Quds Force, an elite unit within the Revolutionary Guard, tasked with fomenting terrorism and undermining the US in Iraq.  The BBC reports today that the Obama administration has released them today to the Iraqis as a means of allowing them to go free:

Five Iranian officials held by the US military in Iraq since January 2007 have been freed, according to Iranian state media.

Tehran’s ambassador to Baghdad was quoted as saying US forces had handed the five, whom he said were diplomats, to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki.

Hassan Kazemi-Qomi said they would soon be taken to the Iranian embassy.

US forces seized the five in the Kurdish city of Irbil on suspicion of arming and funding Shia militias.

Why do this now?  Obviously, it’s appeasement.  The Obama administration wants talks with the Iranian mullahs so badly that he’s not only willing to meet with them unconditionally, he’s now fulfilling their conditions to get direct talks.  The Iranians had made this an issue every time the subject of direct talks arose.

Normally in these transactions, both sides give.  Granted, we have only heard the crowing of the Iranian regime, so we may have received something in return.  Did the Iranians pull their infiltrators out of Iraq?  Did they at least apologize for the deaths of hundreds of our troops at the hands of Iranians and Iranian-supplied weapons?  Did they even pledge to stop at all?

Or did we just cough them up for Obama’s naïve flowers-and-unicorns fantasy that the only reason the Iranians want nukes is because the US has been big meanies to them?

I suspect that it’s the latter.

Barack Obama hates the US.

It’s the only way to justify why he would purposely release military combatants who have been working to KILL our military personnel.

FYI, Barack, both the Qud’s actions and their release by you are acts or war against the USA.

I not only hope you fail: I hope you rot in hell.

tottoritodd on July 9, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Ed, I guess you don’t understand how things work over there.

Look – I don’t like Obama talking to the Iranians either but …

Firstly – on their guilt in killing American Soldiers – I’m not so convinced. Maybe indirectly they are – but as far as pulling triggers and killing Americans with their own hands – I’m not aware they are. That’s first.

Second – are the Shia militias even a threat anymore?

Third – releasing them to the Iraqi government bolsters Iraqi soveriegnty – and that’s something we want to promote. Iran is Iraq’s next door neighbor – they need to learn to deal with them.

Forth – releasing these guys gains us and the new Iraqi government more favor in the eyes of Grand Ayatollah Sistani – and apparently Sistani may be the best hope we have for regime change in Iran.

The ship that is the Obama Doctrine is filling up fast with excremental decisions. The Doctor of Turdology at Harvard has suggested that Obama get a bigger boat.

Americannodash on July 9, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Yeah well Himmler didn’t kill any Jews himself but he certainly directed the apparatus which did.

American soldiers are still dying from IED attacks.

Releasing terrorists is never a good idea, Iraq is going to learn how to deal with Iran regardless of the status of five Iranian aholes.

Sistani. Another player seeing weakness in POS Ogabe.

Their mission was to kill American military personnel. That isn’t even a misdemeanor as far as B.O. Hussein is concerned.

Kindly refrain from using the “T” word. That was just a scary-word invented by Bush/Cheney so the American public would acquiesce in their Halliburton Wars.

From the AP:

Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters that the U.S. released the five to the Iraqi government because it was obliged to do so under a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement that took effect several months ago. Whether they are now set free is up to the Iraqis.

Hmm, was that agreement negotiated under Bush or Obama?

CP on July 9, 2009 at 2:55 PM

What happened to the “we don’t negotiate with terrorists”, now I guess we still don’t negotiate, we just give them what they want, so we can look good to the Islamic extremists, talk about a recruiting boon for them, they just bent over the US without lube.

The question is:

Do you feel safer with these decisions made in the favor of terrorists for some pipe dream of buying peace with a sect of people that hate Americans?

The release of these people is not generally broadcast to the general population, it will likely be newsworthy when these people start attacking us on our soil.

Do you feel safer now?

journeyintothewhirlwind on July 9, 2009 at 11:28 PM

“On Jan. 20, 2007, five American soldiers were killed and three seriously wounded in Iraq. As Bill Roggio relates at the Long War Journal, it was a daring operation: a twelve-man terrorist team disguised as U.S. servicemen attacked our troops as they held a previously arranged meeting with local officials in Karbala. Four of the soldiers were alive when they were abducted from the scene. They were handcuffed and murdered in a remote location when the coalition forces attempting to rescue them closed in.”

A few months later Qais Qazali, Laith Qazali and Ali Mussa Daqduq were captured, along with documents that confirmed they were agents of Iran responsible for organizing and directing terror cells in Iraq. Hundreds of US servicemen and women and thousands of innocent Iraqis died horribly because of them. What these Iranians did were war crimes, from the killing of civilians to the execution of prisoners. They likely took part in operations themselves; in fact the attackers in Karbala were so expertly disguised as American soldiers their equipment and vehicles were very likely supplied directly by Iran.

“About two weeks ago, the Obama administration released Laith Qazali after extensive negotiations with the Asaib al-Haq terror network. That network has long been in negotiations with the fledgling Iraqi government, dangling the possibility of laying down its arms, renouncing violence, and integrating into Iraqi society, provided that its top members – particularly Qais and Laith Qazali, as well as Ali Mussa Daqduq – be released.”
