GAO: Electric cars won’t reduce carbon emissions

The push for conversion to plug-in electric cars will do nothing to stop carbon emissions, a report by the GAO warns, throwing cold water on a push by Democrats to get more plug-ins on the road. In fact, the problem could be made worse as demand goes up at coal-fired electrical plants. Plus, the need for batteries may just have the US changing the dictators to which we’re chained, as IBD reports:
It’s a beautiful theory — highways full of electric cars emitting no greenhouse gases or pollutants after being plugged into an outlet in our garages overnight. The problem, according to a new Government Accountability Office report, is that the effort may only shift the problem somewhere else.
“If you are using coal-fired power plants, and half the country’s electricity comes from coal-powered plants, are you just trading one greenhouse gas emitter for another?” asks Mark Gaffigan, co-author of the GAO report. The report itself notes: “Reductions in CO2 emissions depend on generating electricity used to charge the vehicles from lower-emission sources of energy.”
The GAO report says a plug-in compact car, if recharged at an outlet drawing its power from coal, provides a carbon dioxide savings of only 4% to 5%. If the feeling of saving the environment from driving an electric car causes people to drive more, that small amount of savings vanishes entirely.
This misses another point as well, one I mentioned during the campaign. Obama wants the US to decrease its electrical demand over the next several years as a means of conservation as we switch away from coal and other fossil fuels as a source for power. Transferring cars from gasoline to electricity would vastly increase demand for power at the outlet, which would conflict with the decrease Obama wants to mandate. The result would be prices skyrocketing even higher, and people unable to use their vehicles from a lack of ability to pay for recharging them.
Of course, we have a source for electricity in abundance: nuclear power. IBD suggests that a program to rapidly expand our nuclear-power generation could fill the gap while generating zero carbon emissions. The Obama administration and the Democrats don’t want that, though. They shut down the Yucca Mountain nuclear storage facility, which would have recycled used fuel rods into material for more nuclear power, giving us an almost-completely renewing resource for decades into the future.
The GAO also points out that electric cars would have the US trading one set of dictators for another in order to power our cars. The batteries for electric vehicles are lithium-ion, and for the experimental production levels in the US at this moment, we have enough lithium resources to keep pace. However, once we start building electric cars in mass numbers, we will quickly run through our proven stores of lithium. We would most likely have to do business with Hugo Chavez lackey Evo Morales of Bolivia, where half of the world’s proven stores of lithium reside. Even if we didn’t buy directly from the leftist leader, Morales has the ability to set the global price — just as Saudi Arabia and OPEC do with oil.
Plug-in electrics just trade one carbon source for another, one dictator for another, and deliver a lower-standard vehicle. It’s about as lose-lose as it gets, at least without nuclear power to fuel it.

Yep, cant move 30% of our energy consumption to the grid without increasing generating capacity. And basically an electric car is a coal fired car with losses of energy all along the transmission path from plant to car to battery to motor.
If we switched to all electric vehicles we would probably need to triple the number of existing power plants. If we went nuclear and recycled (reprocessed) spent fuel rather than burying it, we could actually cut emissions. If we are just going to move from gasoline to coal for powering cars, we are urinating upwind.

Some starry eyed moonbat assured me just yesterday that electric is available now. Within a year we can replace all gas cars. His ‘electric’ news was that now, r-i-g-h-t n-o-w, there are electric cars that go from 0-60mph in four seconds.
No….he meant every single word of it.
Limerick on July 9, 2009 at 9:37 PM
If the driver and passengers in these cars weren’t crushed to death on impact, the glass alone would probably decapitate them.
The production of batteries for many of these vehicle solutions is dirty and environmentally destructive. The drain/demands on electricity to charge them will be ineffecient and bankrupt the owners in utility coast.
These appear to be an answer to urban congestion and pollution, but they are not designed for highway dangers. The irony is that urban areas are plentiful with mass transit options, which makes these death traps even more ludicrous.

and there is the problem with leftists unicorn thinking. the only way to solve human problems is to move forward not back. increase energy production, new technology, free enterprise. Yes its messy, freedom always is. but only the free market can do this. Not top down government policy because they can not see all the interactions that will occure. a free market allows those interactions too quickly change. electricity goes up, we use coal, coal goes up we use nuclear. etc.

As higher numbers of these electric death-traps hit the roads, more people will be killed in traffic accidents while driving them. After death those people will no longer contribute a carbon footprint to the atmosphere, and as the rest of us see what mangled remains are left behind from just such an accident, we will decide to either ride bikes or not drive at all.

THE GRID CANNOT HANDLE IT.
It’s not just generation, it’s transfer. Large portions of the NorthEastern and Western grids just can’t handle much more than they do now. Between population growth and electric cars, buses, trains etc., it just ain’t happening without massive and prolonged infrastructure upgrades.
I’ve been telling people that for a decade, but the last person to ever listen is a fanatic or a politician.
It won’t kill anyone if a few hippies drive golf carts to soothe their neuroses or stroke their egos, but as a mass movement it just plain doesn’t work.

Well duh. I actually heard a professor of chemical engineering from my alma mater (too embarassed to name it) say in a radio interview that the batteries she is working on for plug in electrics will be more efficient than internal combustion engines. So, converting potential chemical energy directly to kinetic energy is less efficient than converting chemical to heat, heat to kinetic, kinetic to magnetic, magnetic to electrical, transporting the electric for miles across relatively high resistance lines, converting to chemical, chemical to electrical, electrical to magnetic, and finally magnetic to kinetic. How does that math work out again?

Only counterargument I can come up with is that it’s easier to sequester CO2 from a coal plant than from a tailpipe. But that’s still weak tea.

And raw lithium is very energy intensive to turn into finished batteries. Think about how expensive a camera lith-ion battery pack is… A big chunk of the expense is because it takes so much to make good cells.

The same applies to hydrogen. Since there is no free hydrogen on earth, to speak of, all will have to be separated(most likely from Oxygen in water) and that takes energy. Hydrogen is just a storage medium and the energy to generate the usable hydrogen will have to come from mundane sources just like the electricity to charge electric vehicles.

True, but it goes deeper than that too. When you burn a fossil fuel to generate a Kw of electricity, then run that electricity through the grid, transform it to house current, then transform it again into a DC form for storage in a battery, then transform it again into mechanical energy in an electric motor, you lose some of the energy at each step in that long process. Each step has some resistance, friction or lose to heat or light. Thus it will take more fossil fuel to run a car for 100 miles in this manner than it would if that fuel were burned in an engine right in the car. This will always be true except in the magical mind of liberals who think it is all about how we feel, not about physics.

This entire discussion is predicated on the assumption that Obama et al. give a fig about carbon footprints and the like. This is about controlling economies and lifestyles, as is any “environmental” plan.
