G-8 a bust for climate accord

posted at 12:42 pm on July 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

As I predicted yesterday, the G-8 meeting finally reached a climate-control accord, but one with almost no meaning at all, as the developing nations laughed off suggestions that they hamstring their growing economies.  Instead of agreeing to cap carbon emissions or commit to industrial limits on energy use, the Western nations instead opted to pledge not to make the Earth warmer:

The world’s leading industrial nations tentatively agreed Wednesday to try to prevent global temperatures from rising above a fixed level, after a more far-reaching proposal to slash production of greenhouse gases fizzled, according to U.S. and European negotiators.

Leaders meeting here for the Group of Eight summit said they would pledge to keep temperatures from rising more than 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above average levels of more than a century ago, before large-scale industrial pollution occurred.

Temperatures have already risen by nearly half that amount, leaving little wiggle room. It was unclear what mechanisms, if any, would be adopted to enforce the target.

Some environmental groups saw the announcement as a weak nod at the obvious.

What does this mean?  Absolutely nothing.  It allows the leaders of the G-8 nations to brag about reaching an agreement that literally binds them to do nothing at all.  With temperatures decreasing since 1998’s peak even by the earlier, flawed NASA study, the issue could just as easily be moot.

The environmental groups that had hoped for the imposition of draconian limits on industry struggled to respond to the non-event.  Greenpeace didn’t bother to hide its scorn, expressing its disappointment in the “limited” result.  The Sierra Club lauded the “symbolic” nature of the agreement.  No one pretended that this changed anything at all.

In fact, the G-8 showered disappointment in all directions.  The leaders of the free nations made sure to express its “impatience” with Iran over its nuclear program, and to scold the mullahs for the crackdown on protesters following its rigged presidential election.  However, they couldn’t quite bring themselves to expand the sanctions on Iran for either of those two issues.

Talk, talk, talk.  Blather, blather, blather.  They could have reduced the temperature in L’Aquila, Italy, by avoiding the emissions of the empty gas of their rhetoric.

Has the G8 summit ever accomplished anything? Well at least publicly, I’m sure like most things it’s the back room stuff that no one hears about that actually matters.

For the first time in memory, there was a July Frost on Canada’s Prince Edward Island.

Bob Robichaud, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said that to his knowledge, frost has never been reported before in July in P.E.I.

“That 3.8 we got last night kind of sticks out as being lower than some of the other records for anytime in early July,” Robichaud told CBC News on Wednesday.

“So we’re looking at a significant event,” he said.

And it’s 90º in Alaska–individual data points don’t matter at all for global anything. It could never get above freezing on Prince Edward Island and the globe could still be warming (and conversely it could never again freeze on the island and the globe could be cooling).

The world’s leading industrial nations tentatively agreed Wednesday to try to prevent global temperatures from rising above a fixed level

Wow, that statement is absolutely breathtaking in its arrogance. I wonder if they really believe that the “industrial nations” even have the capacity to “prevent global temperatures from rising above a fixed level”?

What are they going to do? Cap the volcanoes? Stop all forest fires? Force the sun not to shine any brighter?

Sheesh!

I guess when you believe man=god there isn’t anything that is beyond the capabilities of man, we just need the “political will” to get it done, right?

At least they had the good sense to put a qualifier in that statement, promising only to “try” – although I am reasonable terrified about just what exactly what that “try” would encompass.

Temperatures maxed out a 0.6C above 100 years ago. And that was 10 years ago. About 95% of that warming has been given up in the last few years.

Given that 100 years ago, the earth was still recovering from the affects of the little ice age, it’s hardly surprising that temperatures have warmed since then.

MarkTheGreat on July 9, 2009 at 12:54 PM

Saw people, places and things.
I barely had arrived,

The people, places and every last thing.
So we unpacked our adjectives.

I unpacked “frustrating” first.
Reached in and found the word “worst”.
Then I picked “distrubing” and
Next I picked “concerning” and
Then I was ready to tell them my lies.
‘Cause I’d unpacked my adjectives.

****BREAKING STORY ON CNN*****

As a result of the G-8 meeting on Climate Control, NASA has been tasked by the White House to formulate a plan to move the earth into a higher orbit around the Sun. This action, says a NASA spokesperson, will reduce the effect of the Suns’ energy on the surface of the Earth, and will result in lower temperatures worldwide.

In a quick response, Norway threatened to impose heavy economic sanctions on the US if this plan is put into effect. Said the Norwiegian Ministry of Temperature “We are quite pleased and looking forward to some warmer temperatures due to climate change. This unilateral action by the US puts our future warmth at risk, and is unacceptable.”

It’s true! It’s true! The crown has made it clear.
The climate must be perfect all the year.

A law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August cannot be too hot.
And there’s a legal limit to the snow here
In Camelot.
The winter is forbidden till December
And exits March the second on the dot.
By order, summer lingers through September
In Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Camelot, Camelot
That’s how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
In short, there’s simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.

How… appropriate…

Luetkemeyer Bill Would Save Taxpayers $12.5 Million, Denies Funding for UN’s Junk Science
July 8, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. _ U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) today introduced legislation that would save taxpayers $12.5 million this year and millions more in the future by prohibiting the United States from contributing to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is fraught with waste and is engaged in dubious science.

“We all know that the UN is incompetent when it comes to spending money, and that is why American taxpayers should not be forking over millions more to one of its organizations that not only is in need of significant reform but is engaged in dubious scientific quests,” Luetkemeyer said. “Folks in Missouri and across the country are tired of this never ending government spending spree, and my goal is to deliver some of our people’s hard-earned money back into their pocketbooks instead of spending it on international junk science.”

Luetkemeyer’s legislation would prohibit U.S. contributions to the IPCC, which is nothing more than a group of U.N. bureaucrats that supports man-made claims on global warming that many scientists disagree with.

More than 700 international scientists signed on to the U.S. Senate Minority Report expressing their concerns about man-made claims on global warming promoted by the UN IPCC. The dissenting scientists are more than 13 times the number of UN scientists, 52, who authored a report claiming that human emissions of carbon dioxide are responsible for dangerous and unprecedented warming. The dissenting scientists are from all over the world, including Japan, Italy, UK, Czech Republic, Canada, the Netherlands and the U.S. that are affiliated with institutions including, NASA, U.S. Navy, U.S. Defense Department, Energy Department, U.S. Air Force and the EPA.

Meanwhile, our very own Environmental Protection Agency recently reported that we are undergoing a period of worldwide cooling.

Luetkemeyer also filed the legislation as an amendment to the Department of State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations Act.

Supporters of the cap-and-trade legislation are using the questionable findings by the UN IPCC as one reason to support the onerous legislation, which is nothing more than a national energy tax and will be debated soon by the U.S. Senate. Luetkemeyer voted against this legislation and will continue to voice his concerns with the majority’s cap-and-tax legislation.

Single points do not matter at all–doesn’t matter if the ocean moderates or increases effects at a single point. Much like a drought in your neck of the woods does not mean the Earth is lacking in rain, heat or cold in one part doesn’t mean anything about the entire system’s average temperature. For example in my part of the country there has been record heat this year.

As for your records? They simply doesn’t matter either, the entire US could be cooler than average and global warming could well be in effect. We’re not talking about America cooling or America warming. This is a long term global issue, year to year and place to place will of course vary.

Interesting site to play with though, there were 17 highest minimum temps yesterday. Meaningless in terms of arguing climate change, but fun to see what the various records actually are around the country.

They were also freezing in Melbourne, Australia three days ago. All the G-8 had to do was meet, and voila! it gets cold!

It is all very sinister and I hope and pray that these people will be held to account eventually – and that will have to be a very harsh and permanent accounting!

progressoverpeace on July 9, 2009 at 1:28 PM
We can’t even imagine the price they will pay, judgement is inevitable.

fourdeucer on July 9, 2009 at 1:37 PM

What is the temperature supposed to be?

I suggest we start there…….

I’m with you on that. I wanna win, not just fight for the rest of my life.

It accomplishes one thing: they get to feel all noble & good by wasting many billions of other people’s money (their taxpayer’s without asking) by their promises of aid to hopelessly corrupt & bloody Africa. Assuming it’s government to government aid it mainly will increase the swiss bank accounts of many African “leaders” & their cronies. See the book
“Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa”

http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Aid-Working-Better-Africa/dp/0374139563/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247161761&sr=1-1

Besides, I believe Malthus was totally correct and if the G8 did save a million Africans from starving today that would only mean that about 4 million will be starving and begging for aid a few years down the dependency road, and so on exponentially. Africa is that way and still – even with rampant AIDS, famine, war, genocide and diseases of all kinds – its population growth is staggering.

IMO it is better and even more moral to use those billions at home.

Let’s spend a gagigatrillion dollars on a “try”.

It seems to be working with the “Stimulus”

It’s supposed to be cool enough for puppies. But not too cool for unicorns.

Only government intervention will save our puppies and unicorns.

Boy, Berlusconi sure looks happy in that photo. I guess that’s what having a private island stocked with topless babes does for a world leader.

****BREAKING STORY ON CNN*****

I heard Obama and Norway have reached a compromise. The U.S. will also adjust the earth’s axis, thereby making Norway tropical. Is there nothing smart power can’t do?

ROCnPhilly on July 9, 2009 at 2:26 PM

are you saying it was all HOT AIR?

thedude on July 9, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Shhhh. We aren’t allowed to use facts. It’s about feeeeeeelings.

PimFortuynsGhost on July 9, 2009 at 1:02 PM

Yeah and it took jonknee almost a full half hour to come up with more talking points to respond to my data.

BTW, Prince Edward Island is fairly large-over 2,000 square miles, and these lows were recorded not just at one station.

BTW in western Canada, Edmondton had a frost on July 1st.

Brilliant. Commit to a goal that they can’t miss.

tom on July 9, 2009 at 2:43 PM

This whole global warming thing couldn’t be simpler to fix.
They just need to pass a law limiting the frequency and severity of solar flares.

Why didn’t those dipshits think of this sooner?

TheSitRep on July 9, 2009 at 2:44 PM
