CNN Creates Misleading Headlines to Save Obama’s Credibility
posted at 7:26 pm on July 9, 2009 by Slublog
The headline:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The number of Americans filing initial unemployment claims fell sharply last week, while those filing ongoing claims rose to another all-time high, according to government data released Thursday.
There were 565,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended July 4, down 52,000 from a revised 617,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said.
It was the lowest number since January and was below the consensus estimate of 603,000 from economists surveyed by Briefing.com.
Analysts said last week’s drop was distorted by a change in the pattern of seasonal layoffs in the automotive industry.
In other words, the “good news” is that plants closed earlier this year than normal, so the job numbers “improved.”
Here’s the actual jobs picture:
Meanwhile, the number of people requesting continued jobless benefits rose to a record high, indicating that the labor market remains weak.
The government said continuing claims rose to 6,883,000 in the week ended June 27, the most recent data available.
That’s an increase of 159,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 6,724,000 and was the highest reading since the Labor Department began keeping records in 1967.
Compare that happy news headline with how CNN headlined a story about potential job losses when a different party controlled the White House.
This isn’t bias. It’s malpractice.
Update (Ed): Via HA reader Geoff A, CNN isn’t the only one spinning this for Obama. The AP’s making some pretty good RPM as well. They headline their article “New jobless claims fall to lowest since January,” even though, as Slublog points out above, the statistic is an artifact of policy:
The number of newly laid-off workers filing initial claims for jobless benefits last week fell to lowest level since early January, largely due to changes in the timing of auto industry layoffs.
Continuing claims, meanwhile, unexpectedly jumped to a record-high. While layoffs are slowing, jobs remain scarce and the unemployment rate is rising, which some economists worry could weaken or delay a recovery. The unemployment rate rose to 9.5 percent last month and is expected to top 10 percent by the end of this year.
Shouldn’t the headline be “Unemployment continues to worsen”? It would have been in the Bush or Reagan administrations.

I can hardly wait until the fall when new claims will only fall to -200K because there’s no one left to lay off.
Of course continuing claims will equal 13/16% of the population but the media will love how Obama is now “saving” jobs.
What a joke.

CNN and other news outlets can try to spin it all they want, but unemployment is such that now most people know someone who is out of work with few prospects. The economy is such that everyone knows someone (or is someone) who has been told that their business is going to need some slashing to keep going.
Once things get so bad or so good that the news is spread by word of mouth it gets beyond the control of the media.

Good one.
Who the hell does CNN think they are fooling?
Do they think that they have the responsibility now of not panicking the sheep by telling the truth?
Hmmm..maybe we shouldn’t frame it like that.
If I recall correctly we were treated to daily reports of how bad the economy was last August when there was Republican in office but now…not so much.
Also when was the last time you heard any staistics of the millions of homeless “families” that fill our streets.
I also notice that we are no longer treated to graphic images of muslim peasants screaming and wailing over the body of some child murdered by an American bomb.

NeoKong on July 9, 2009 at 7:41 PM
As I posted in the green room comments earlier…it’s actually even more distorted than that. Last week was a holiday week and there were only 4 days available to file claims. If you extrapolate those numbers to a 5 day week, the number is significantly higher than the worst estimate.

Americans are very worried. The stats above do not count those who have their hours cut and/or forced to take a day off.

Fox just had a similar deal in saying there was “good news” on the economy because unemployment claims were down around 565,000, but they did counter that with the jobless rates being the highest in 26 years. My interpretation on the unemployment claims is that most of these people may now be on straight welfare, or totally given up trying to find a job. Just because unemployment claims are down does not mean that unemployment number is dropping! In fact, it is going up.

doriangrey on July 9, 2009 at 8:14 PM
Soon we’ll start seeing “news” pieces about how high unemployment is actually a good thing. It will be the flip side of how the media used to look for dark clouds in the silver lining of Bush’s economy, by running stories about how low unemployment numbers were making life tough for employment counselors and temp agencies.
When national unemployment hits 10%, you’ll see the first stories about how all the layoffs are actually a blessing in disguise for previously over-stressed workers, who now have more time to spend with their families. You might also see a few stories about how massive job loss among male workers is creating exciting new opportunities for women to shatter that glass ceiling.
Around 12% unemployment, I expect to see the first stories about the beneficial environmental effects of reduced commuting. The relatively empty highways will be so much cleaner and more pleasant than the oily morning-rush traffic of the awful, high-employment Bush era.

The problem that nobody in Government will say is that we are headed into another deeper recession. Come this fall, the market is going to drop much further and could possibly “crash”. A prominent economist from Morgan Stanley yesterday reaffirmed my beliefs. Most politicians and banking heads want to try and sugar coat and be positive, but they are ignoring some very troubling signs in the market. These employment numbers are atrocious, and it’s going to get worse. Consumer confidence is going to drop, and after some rise in the market it’s going to “correct” and things will get really ugly. Sorry.

Taking more spending and investing power out of individual’s hands is ultimately what hurts all of us. Just having ‘a job’ is not good enough for the economy (nor of course for the individual that could do better if only the opportunity exists).
