Waxman: L’etat, c’est Obama; Update: AOL Hot Seat poll added

posted at 2:22 pm on July 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We saw glimmers of this in the controversy over Rush Limbaugh’s “I want Obama to fail” comment, masked by the media’s stampede to demonize Rush rather than look objectively at the full context of the remark.  No such mask exists now for the Barack-Obama-equals-America argument from Democrats these days, as Rep. Henry Waxman trots out the dissent-is-treason colloquy:

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), who has had an eventful couple of weeks to say the least, believes House Republican opposition to climate change legislation and the stimulus indicates they’re cheering against the good ol’ US of A.

“It appears that the Republican Party leadership in the Congress has made a decision that they want to deny President Obama success, which means, in my mind, they are rooting against the country, as well,” the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman told WAMU radio host Diane Rehm on Tuesday morning, promoting his new book, “The Waxman Report.”

This is more than just stupid, which it is by the truckload.  It’s also dangerous.  Making opposition to any politician’s policies or actions a case for treason amounts to an extension of the Louis XIV principle, L’etat, c’est moi, or “I am the state.”  It’s also the same idea behind the fuehrerprinzip that allowed Adolf Hitler untrammeled power in the Nazi regime, and any number of other tyrants, great and petty.  It is an essential construct of fascism, tyranny, and elitism.

Of course, this is made all the more hilarious because of the numerous accusations from the Left that dissent against George Bush was the highest form of patriotism.  For instance, Helen Thomas wrote about the same Louis XIV quote in declaring Bush a dictator in all but name because he exercised his authority to prosecute a war authorized by Congress:

In public appearances this week, Bush defended his program of domestic spying without court approval, citing the inherent war powers of the presidency under the U.S. Constitution.

The president points to his status as commander-in-chief and the resolution — approved by Congress three days after the 9/11 attacks — authorizing him to use “all necessary and appropriate force” against the terrorists.

It is an obvious overreach of presidential prerogative; thin justification for what amounts to a snooping foray against Americans and others in the U.S.

It all smacks of France’s Louis XIV’s famous dictum: “L’etat, c’est moi”— “I am the state.”

For all of the wailing and accusations that Republicans challenged the patriotism of Democrats during the Bush administration, I don’t recall a single incident in which a Republican member of Congress said that opposition to Bush’s policies amounted to opposition to the USA.  It seems that we had an eight-year case of pre-projection, and the L’etat, c’est moi crowd were the Democrats all along.

The rest of us understand that we live in a republic, with democratic processes, without anointed leaders and cults of personality.  Maybe the Democrats should learn that, too.

Update: Here’s the AOL Hot Seat poll on the question. I notice that well over 80% of the 3,000 people who voted in this poll before I posted it at Hot Air reject Waxman’s gesture.

Remember when the leftists said “Don’t question our patriotism” and complained about it, even though no one ever did it?

Oh man, things change.

Well, Waxoff, if rooting against socialism means rooting against America, then I hope America fails.

Besides…I rooted for Brazil last week…

Bush defended his program of domestic spying without court approval, citing the inherent war powers of the presidency under the U.S. Constitution.

She sure got that wrong. The spying was on communications with at least one endpoint outside the country, a type of intelligence gathering which is epitomized by Customs, which has the legal ability to warrantlessly paw through anything transiting our borders.

unclesmrgol on July 8, 2009 at 2:30 PM

The quickest solution would be to march, a million strong onto DC and drag said Waxman and his fellow cronies down the steps of Congress and march them out of town.

He can scream Treason! all the way out.

Statists, communists, marxists, socialists … whatever “ist” you want to call them, they run the country right now and they’re running it into the ground.

He can STFU and go away anytime as far as i’m concerned. I think Obama’s gonna have a 30% approval rating long before anyone expects.

if there was any sanity in this world the Dems wouldn’t have 30 Senators let alone 60 and maybe about 100 house seats.

It was pretty obvious after the election that we would come sometime to a point where dissent was no longer patriotic. Still, I am dismayed at how quickly it has happened, how brazenly it was pronounced, and how alarmingly the media calmly fail to note the mammoth hypocrisy of the whole thing. I am disgusted.

jwolf on July 8, 2009 at 2:32 PM

Yep..Waxman and the liberal democrats demonstrate the true meaning of the words ‘brazen’, and ‘audacious’, and they think no one will notice or dare to speak out.

When no one will report on your brazen audaciousness, you can act that way with impunity. Once again the MSM abdicates its responsibilities in order to be the propeganda wing of the Democrat party.

The difference is, that no NFL team would be stupid enough to do what we’ve done in electing Obama.

But then, that’s football. It’s far more important than electing a jackass like Obama to the highest position in the land.

Since President “Milk It” let Waxman and Ed Markey draw up Cap-and-Tax, and Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank draw up Debt-ulous for his signature, of course acting-Presidents like Waxman are going to feel threatened by challenges to their puppet, Obama.

Waxman has so much to lose if he, Markey, Frank, Pelosi and the other de facto heads of nation can’t rely on Obama’s name to get legislation passed

ChrisB on July 8, 2009 at 2:40 PM

Waxhead’s message was most likely intended for party members on his side of the isle that fear voting for legislation that will result in their political death. Democrats have the votes to pass anything they want, therefore it’s silly to waste any time on Republicans unless the president doesn’t have the votes and Waxhead knows it.

The recent tea party protests have been ignored by the media, and pretty much ignored by most bloggers with the exception of instapundit, however they were noticed by the WH and all members of the house up for re-election. Obama’s approval ratings are falling like a lead weight because of his out of control spending, coupled with a failing economy that he promised would be better by now if we threw billions of dollars at it. Obama and the Democrats own this economy, and the Democrats up for re-election in 2010 want to separate themselves, and make this the Obama economy alone, rather than a Democrat Party economy.

For all of the wailing and accusations that Republicans challenged the patriotism of Democrats during the Bush administration, I don’t recall a single incident in which a Republican member of Congress said that opposition to Bush’s policies amounted to opposition to the USA.

That may be strictly true, as you phrased it, but I found some nice quotes that are pretty similar to what Waxman said:

Rep. Tom Davis, about Tom Daschle:

“[Daschle's] divisive comments have the effect of giving aid and comfort to our enemies by allowing them to exploit divisions in our country”

Senator Trent Lott:

“How dare Senator Daschle criticize President Bush while we are fighting our war on terrorism, especially when we have troops in the field.”

Rush Limbaugh:

“In essence, Daschle has chosen to align himself with the axis of evil”

Many right-leaning commentators labeled anti-war activists as “pro-Saddam.” I know that they weren’t Congressmen, but the point is that liberals weren’t “pre-projecting,” as you put it. This type of claim was widespread.

There are also plenty of statements made by Republican Congressmen and members of Bush’s administration, including Bush, that claimed that the enemy was rooting for, and actively supporting, those who opposed Bush’s policies. It’s not exactly the same thing as saying that dissenters are rooting against the country, but it’s just as bad.

I do want Obama, the democrat socialists (and their RINO buddies) in Congress, and the lemming to all FAIL!

I hope Waxman fails.

He already has. That’s why he’s in government, he couldn’t succeed in real life. Now he’s micromanaging others’ lives.

Yes, because b!tching about economic policies are exactly the same as disparaging the CIC during a war. Show me where any of our folks have said anything about Mr. Obama’s policies in how he is handling the military and the Afghanistan campaign.

I was responding to Ed’s blanket assertion. If you want to claim that dissent about wartime policies can amount to treason, while dissent about other policies cannot, I completely disagree with you, but that’s a different conversation.

By the way, just to be clear, I agree that Waxman’s statement is both absurd and dangerous.

Interesting quotes. I would agree that equating honest criticism of the ruling party with treason or lack of patriotism is wrong from either side.

But there’s a difference between criticizing policy decisions and wanting our military to fail in its mission.

I disagree with most of the President’s values and policies, but I hope our military is successful under his leadership. Could we say that Pelosi and Reid shared that sentiment under Bush?

Are you arguing this point?

Keemo on July 8, 2009 at 3:01 PM

I am arguing against Ed’s assertion that Republican Senators never did this.

The first time that this rat-faced POS uses force or violence–or the credible threat of violence–to get his way, he needs to share Louis XIV’s fate.

The rest of us understand that we used to live in a republic, with democratic processes, without anointed leaders and cults of personality.
