Waxman: L’etat, c’est Obama; Update: AOL Hot Seat poll added
posted at 2:22 pm on July 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
We saw glimmers of this in the controversy over Rush Limbaugh’s “I want Obama to fail” comment, masked by the media’s stampede to demonize Rush rather than look objectively at the full context of the remark. No such mask exists now for the Barack-Obama-equals-America argument from Democrats these days, as Rep. Henry Waxman trots out the dissent-is-treason colloquy:
Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), who has had an eventful couple of weeks to say the least, believes House Republican opposition to climate change legislation and the stimulus indicates they’re cheering against the good ol’ US of A.
“It appears that the Republican Party leadership in the Congress has made a decision that they want to deny President Obama success, which means, in my mind, they are rooting against the country, as well,” the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman told WAMU radio host Diane Rehm on Tuesday morning, promoting his new book, “The Waxman Report.”
This is more than just stupid, which it is by the truckload. It’s also dangerous. Making opposition to any politician’s policies or actions a case for treason amounts to an extension of the Louis XIV principle, L’etat, c’est moi, or “I am the state.” It’s also the same idea behind the fuehrerprinzip that allowed Adolf Hitler untrammeled power in the Nazi regime, and any number of other tyrants, great and petty. It is an essential construct of fascism, tyranny, and elitism.
Of course, this is made all the more hilarious because of the numerous accusations from the Left that dissent against George Bush was the highest form of patriotism. For instance, Helen Thomas wrote about the same Louis XIV quote in declaring Bush a dictator in all but name because he exercised his authority to prosecute a war authorized by Congress:
In public appearances this week, Bush defended his program of domestic spying without court approval, citing the inherent war powers of the presidency under the U.S. Constitution.
The president points to his status as commander-in-chief and the resolution — approved by Congress three days after the 9/11 attacks — authorizing him to use “all necessary and appropriate force” against the terrorists.
It is an obvious overreach of presidential prerogative; thin justification for what amounts to a snooping foray against Americans and others in the U.S.
It all smacks of France’s Louis XIV’s famous dictum: “L’etat, c’est moi”— “I am the state.”
For all of the wailing and accusations that Republicans challenged the patriotism of Democrats during the Bush administration, I don’t recall a single incident in which a Republican member of Congress said that opposition to Bush’s policies amounted to opposition to the USA. It seems that we had an eight-year case of pre-projection, and the L’etat, c’est moi crowd were the Democrats all along.
The rest of us understand that we live in a republic, with democratic processes, without anointed leaders and cults of personality. Maybe the Democrats should learn that, too.
Update: Here’s the AOL Hot Seat poll on the question. I notice that well over 80% of the 3,000 people who voted in this poll before I posted it at Hot Air reject Waxman’s gesture.

I would like to know how a human with a few working brain cells ‘not sure’ in a poll. Why would you even want to take a poll if you can not be sure of how you feel on an issue?

63% of over 6,000 people say yes. Its official, Bush is as bad as the Iranians.
cozmo on July 8, 2009 at 6:43 PM
This is why all polls are push polls; the way they ask the question pushes you toward a specific answer. Repeated often enough, the “question” begins to appear to be a statement.
Then, people who don’t care about facts and logic can say things like:
“a majority of the American people believe…”
“most people think…”
“we all agree…”
And then cite bogus poll factoids, without taking sample weighting, technique, or breakdowns into effect.

Make a list of every time Waxman voted against Pres Bush’s initiatives. Were all those instances treason too?
Scrappy on July 8, 2009 at 7:22 PM
Yep, that’s right.
Step # 1 – commision a poll – use a pollster who will;
A. Oversample democrats and so-called independents.
B. Call peoples houses during the day, guaranteeing an under-representation of, oh, I don’t know, people who work?
Step # 2 – skew the questions to promote an answer. Example: “Do you think torture, as the U.S. Military has practiced it at Guantanamo, is evil?”
Step # 3 – Widely report only the answer, tied to a headline that seems to be supported by the answer.
Presto, you now have a headline that screams:
“Poll shows Americans think U.S. torture is wrong.”
Step # 4 – Report on the headline, as if it had clearly established a complete, unassailable truth. Do not provide any internal components of the poll; if possible, avoid even referring to the stated poll question in your article.
This is how it’s done.
Combine it with the “big lie theory;” A lie, repeated often enough, becomes the truth.
We who know better are a small group, and must continue to expose the techniques, in hopes of swinging more people to our side.

Its more general then that. Democrats didn’t start turning political differences into treason or hating this country, Republicans did. Sure, we can argue on the margins over which is a more sensible (if still misguided) position to take, but goddamn, Republicans, and commenters here, were just SO EAGER to paint “socialistic tendencies” or “foreign policy naivete as treasonous…thats what happens when you get down and dirty, it gets thrown back at you.
ernesto on July 8, 2009 at 9:20 PM
Waxman spent the better part of the eight years of the Bush Administration being a thorn in the side of the president. He used his efforts to build cases for litigation and investigations to the point of ludicrousness.
Waxman’s vision for America is not one that most of our citizens embrace. He has attempted to impose the crippling green laws of California on our whole nation. California has driven out its more productive businesses and residents with exhorbitant regulation and taxation. The state is bankrupt. Does Waxman want to destroy our whole country the same way?
Waxman has the same self-regard and hubris as Gore, Pelosi, and Obama in re to this climate-change nonsense. For a mere representative, Waxman has way too much power.

OK, I’ll bite – please provide an actual citation, with a link, or a source.
A specific case where an elected Republican, in a leadership position, said that a particular dissent was treasonous, or indicated that the person who gave the dissent hated America.
If you’re wondering why I challenge your assertion, it’s because it follows a particular construct.
To excuse a Democrat, say “both parties do this.”
To accuse a Republican, say “look what the Republican did.”

This is no surprise of course, as he also employs his brother James, who is decidedly Leftist.
Del Dolemonte on July 8, 2009 at 9:39 PM
Thats one hell of a flimsy rhetorical justification you just gave me. “this particular construct”…are you serious?
obviously my contention was not with the specific role the “accuser” happens to take. if you hadn’t noticed, no one made that the key circumstance when they wrote up the poll or in the quote that i originally chose. Its why people quote when they post, to include the context from which one chooses to argue.
I know Boehner or Bush or Hastert said that. But the general line of argument is extremely similar to the lines of argument used by conservatives (especially on this site, another specific note i made in my original post) have been using for some time now.
My comment was explicit in its describing general lines of argument. It was not a comment on individual democrats in leadership positions who happen to make dumb assertions. I’ll gladly concede that it takes a democrat official to make such an assertion from a position of leadership. But i’ll continue to assert that the general line of argument was the crux of many a conservative criticism of liberal political ideas.

Phil Byler on July 8, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Not a flimsy justification, a solid question, which you have chosen not to answer.
The argument you made, that I took exception to, was this one;
And, since we were original talking about Waxman, who happens to be an elected representative, I asked you this;
Not really flimsy, when you look at it.
When you’re argument is that Republicans started something, and I ask you to come up with a specific citation, you should work on that, instead of trying to be dismissive of me.
Remember, “you saying so, don’t make it so.”
Proof of your original assertion?
Then, in your later post, you say this;
Okay, so we’re getting closer.
“democrat official making assertion from position of leadership” does not equal “the general line of argument was the crux of many a conservative criticism of liberal political ideas.”
Seafood chowder may have clams, but it is not clam chowder.
Now, whose argument looks flimsy?

ok. make this whole thing about the semantic difference between conservative and republican. i apologize for using republican where i meant conservative. thank you for making the correction. for the 2nd time, my point was about lines of argument, not about positions of leadership. i conceded to you on that regard already, and seeing as that had little to do with my original argument, it was an easy concession.
but please, reread my post with “conservative” instead of “republican” and “liberal” instead of “democrat” if you cant get it through your head that i made the mistake of using the terms interchangeably. jeez.
ernesto on July 8, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Ernesto, you seem to think I’m hung up on the non-interchangeability of the terms “conservative” and “republican.”
Nope!
You need a Venn diagram for this, each has a component that is a subset of the other.
But, don’t do that exercise yet; answer my original question first.
What always gets me is the glib and easy way that some posters throw out logically unsupported statements like;
Without being able to support the assertion.
So, I asked you to support it.
You haven’t.
It’s not about labels; it’s not about the non-interchangeability of conservative and republican.
Don’t try to move the goalposts.

OT T. Boone Pickens drops plans for massive wind farm; claims that project costs $12 billion and would power up to 1 million homes. A little back of the envelope calculation says that an average $400/month electric bill times 1 million homes equals 30 years to pay off the down payment on this project (minus interest, upkeep, and profits). What’s going on here? Sounds like a Ponzi scheme gone bust early.

Pickens says Texas Panhandle wind project still alive
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/6519601.html
Billionaire investor Boone Pickens said today that he is delaying, not canceling, a $10 billion wind energy project in Texas.
The so-called Pampa project will be postponed until 2013 when Texas is expected to complete a $4.9 billion transmission line, Pickens said in Washington today. Reports by the Dallas Morning News and Associated Press on Tuesday that he was ending the project were wrong, he said.
“I didn’t cancel it,” said Pickens, 81, the chairman of Dallas-based BP Capital LLC. “Financing is tough right now so what is going to happen is it’s going to be pushed back a year or two.” Pickens spoke after a press conference to promote legislation intended to encourage the development of natural gas-powered vehicles.

All I can say to the Democrates is think long and hard about this. You have control of the House and Senate. It is on you.
We the People on the other hand are largly a conservative populace and at some possible future date in a much more defensive and watchful America when we are hunting the witch’s and goblins that destroyed our country and our children’s future, we may be hunting you.
