Video: NRSC, “60″

posted at 8:53 am on July 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Al Franken took his seat in the Senate this week, a gift of comedy from the muddled voters of my state, and with it, Democrats have the magic number in the Senate with which to control the flow of legislation. The NRSC decided to mark the occasion with a fundraising effort to ensure that Democrats only have that situation in place for 18 months:

I like the ad, with a couple of reservations, one minor, one more serious. First, the minor point: checks and balances should come from the Constitutional exercise of prerogatives of each branch. Political parties don’t serve that function. Practically speaking, though, it amounts to the same thing, just as it did from 2001-6, we should recall.

The more serious point: we need to certainly run hard against Democrats, but we also need to give voters reasons to vote for Republicans.  The recent Rasmussen poll of GOP voters show financial and economic issues rank highest with 60% of them, and presumably Democrats will be feeling the same way after a month or two more of Obamanomics.  There’s nothing wrong with this ad, as long as it’s followed by ads laying out Republican principles for economic growth, fiscal responsibility, and getting government out of energy production.  The NRSC has time to do that, but they and the RNC need to start soon in getting out a positive message for Republican campaigns.

Pretty good ad, I have to say. Certainly makes Franken come off as a twitchy freak.

DrSteve on July 8, 2009 at 8:57 AM

Really, the point of the ad is meaningless when there are about 10 Republicans in the Senate who can be counted on to vote with the Democrats at least half the time. Gang of 14, anyone?

BigD on July 8, 2009 at 8:58 AM

Saw this through Instapundit and liked it, simple and concise.

Follow it up with some real numbers that Americans can apply to their own lives and create the basis to hammer the ‘rats in 2010. Don’t use trillions or hundreds of billions, use the numbers that individual families will see on their utility, gasoline and grocery bills to get the points across.

Bishop on July 8, 2009 at 8:58 AM

I am sure the demoncrats will try to rip this apart however, as always there is not a single thing presented that is not true. I think even demoncrats are going to swing, to a certain point, away from “the One” with the thoughts of another possible bailout. As always, I will vote again.

My only (minor) worry is that it will be one of those things that make people feel guilty and therefore they won’t want to listen or they’ll get angry and want to shoot the messenger, so to speak. Because I actually misread the “They have no one to blame” part and thought it was going to say They have no one to blame but the American people.

The NRSC has time to do that, but they and the RNC need to start soon in getting out a positive message for Republican campaigns.

How do Senate Republicans talk about fiscal responsibility when many of them have a record of being fiscally irresponsible? How do they talk about getting government out of energy production when they keep passing laws for bigger government intervention? Fact of the matter is that what the Senate GOP needs most is a better set of Republicans!

Make no mistake, Democrats are more vulnerable than they think but to do so, the GOP needs to be out there with a harsh right-of-center message. That kind of position runs counter to the positions staked out by rat bastard traitors like McCain and Collins. Chuck Grassley is wasting time on flag burning amendments. Only Mitch McConnel seems to be on message.

Could this be our follow up strategy?

One Against Many on July 8, 2009 at 9:11 AM

Sure, be for something, but do it in a separate commercial. The news right now is bleak, and the GOP should pull no punches and should not be afraid to call it like it is for fear of being negative. I therefore have no prob with the negative tone of the ad. In fact, they left out 10% unemployment.

If I were running things, I’d be hammering the unemployment #s, and the dreadful job prospects for young high school and college grads. And I’d run it online. Message: 10% Unemployment. Democrats are jobkillers. How are you liking The Change?

very lame ad from a very lame and dysfunctional Republican Party. The Rasmussen poll says it, although vague. Its not so much “financial and economic” issues but jobs. High paying private sector jobs. Or the lack thereof. Obama and the radical environ whackos are gleefully disposing of a half million jobs per month and the Repub’s can’t seem to exploit that?? Because Republicans place little value on jobs for US citizens. That has been their attitude over the past 6-8 years. Especially since 1/21/05. And that one issue is what cost them the elections on 11/7/06 and 11/4/08. And they’re still not wise to that fact. Darvin Dowdy

I remember, and I know you remember. I think the fiscal conservative thrust still has a sharp edge on it. But as to someone else’s point, we need some new Republicans and some good primary challengers.

I think the 2010 ad specifics will come out just fine. Plenty of awful statistics to come out between now and then. Boondoggles, wasted moneys, failed programs — and where these aren’t found, juked stats and a trail of fired or bullied IGs. There will be more than enough fodder for 30-second spots.

Anyway, give us candidates with proven records of competence and fiscal conservatism and we’ll be just fine.

Seriously, the adults in charge now have demonstrated that they can destroy this country at warp speed, but Bush didn’t do much to convince me that he wasn’t trying to damage the economy either (TARP, Medicare Part D, …).

No one will care about what the “balance” is in the Senate, only that the D’s are failing to do their jobs for the country.

That will be all that matters. The D’s can scream about Palin all they want; it will be the equivalent of trying to display the Shiny Pony.

Won’t work if things are the way they are now. The way Teh Won is printing money and kicking off inflation, they will be worse.

Why should I vote for Republicans based on this ad? Because they’ll put a check and balance on Obama? In what way? Big government instead of bigger? Less higher taxes instead of more? What is the point? We gave them six years of control and they did nothing except a tax cut which they’re not even willing to defend because it has Bush’s name attached.

The NRSC has time to do that, but they and the RNC need to start soon in getting out a positive message for Republican campaigns.

That has been a message several of us have been pounding the table with since 2005 starting at CQ’ers to no avail.

The common theme since has been the lack of Repub leadership. It persists to this day. They just don’t get it. Repubs will make gains in 2010 because of the dynamics of election cycle. What I fear is that they will again attribute those gains to their efforts as opposed to the real reasons, the election cycle and Dem failures.

patrick neid on July 8, 2009 at 9:31 AM

So yeah, step one of the plan is simple = wait for Dem’s to overreach, screw everything up, spend too much and go weak-kneed around the world. Check.

The problem with the necessary follow up is that Republicans don’t know exactly how bad things are going to be, and therefore don’t know what to give as a follow-up other than vague generalities like “we’ll fix it” or “we’ll spend less”.

Republicans might be staring at 10-15% unemployment. Might be staring at China not buying any more debt and the US suffering from hyper-inflation. Serious issues.

Can they lay out a strategy to fix it?

it’s going to be an even longer time in the desert for conservatives if that is what the message from GOP ‘elite’

lame, no actually its double-lame and here’s why:

- Most voters don’t give a flying rats behind about Al Franken – much less recognize him in those clips, so that is a big FAIL
- Completely down played the most important parts which speak to the ‘pain’ of voters, and that is the jobs issues – yes, one 2 second ‘9.5% unemployment’ graphic won’t cut it
- Music? Geesh – are we at the funeral of a mafia boss? Way to instill optimism /sarc
- Can we leave our petty 2nd grade pissing contest at the door please? What’s with that ‘no one to blame’ line? That speaks to the echo chamber that is the GOP ‘elite’, but comes across sooo dumb to everyone else.

The ‘anti-dem’ party schtick is dumb and ineffective. Give us a reason to go to the polls to pull the lever for your sorry butts (although not *quite* as sorry as the dem butts)

gatorboy on July 8, 2009 at 9:32 AM

The republicans still don’t know how to fight even the the dems have been showing how its done for over 15 years now.

Allinky’s rule, pick the target an individual not a body, isolate it pounce on it and bury it. Al Frankin is OK to use as the boogeyman but he just got there. They need to demonize the head of the snake. They need to tie Pelosi (the worst pictures of her and there is plenty of them)around the neck of every democrat in the house and demonize the the living hell out of her and the dems. They have Dodd, Frank and Waxman, the ones the electorate can recognize. Voice over announcer, “They voted to raise your electric bill in time of eceonomic crises, he / she voted to put your grandchildren in debt, he/she voted to tax your health care benefits during a recession, he/she voted to take away your choice of doctors and have the government pick them for you, He/ she voted to make America a less safe country by cancelling vital defense systems.” They have to be hard hitting and graphic. Talking about checks and balances won’t cut it. The average independent voter with limited political interest with think they are talking about a personal checking account. Anybody remember the church burning ads in the south done by the dems in the 90’s? The dems used this tactic this with Newt and was effective. The republicans have to fight fire with fire. Their is a goldmine of issues out there them dems can be brought to task on. The republicans just need the balls to call them on it.

Seriously, the intolerance of McCain et. al. to social and evangelical conservatives is a far bigger hurdle for the GOP to overcome than selling the nation on the idea that somebody needs to reign in the filthy liar and his corrupt party.

The GOP is where it is because McCain and his ilk have run around acting like little Democrats. Victory will only come when their kind is irrelevant to the discussion and, in the Senate, virtually all of them are just like McCain. The message needs to be that the economy will recover, and would have been further along if Obama had kept his hands out of it.

Focus on the minimal amount of spending so far of stimulus dollars as politization of the dollars that had to be approved immediately so they could sit idly by as people lose jobs, only to be held back to be used as campaigning talking points in a couple years.

Obama is NOT encouraging private sector recovery, but the signals are out there he is trying to begin to spin this recovery into his favor.

I’ve recieved multiple emails and phone calls questioning whether I have ‘taken advantage’ of Stimulus dollars in the form of tax rebates or for adding employees.

Look for propaganda to come spewing from the administrations spin machine in the next month or so.

It shows who is at the Helm of Distruction,’Palimino Pelosi,
smartest woman on the planet, and high-prietest of Ethical
and Transparency, good ol’Harry, the war is lost, and you can
smell em,when the vistors arrive Reid!

Then,theres Fence Post Turtle,Hopey/Changey!!

And the last, till least, its still 1984,but the Democrats

by saying,screw-you,we don’t need no stikin bi-partasanship
and have taken complete ownership,of the debauckle of the
America economy!!

The Liberal Party said no,to any help from Team Republican!

For six years, the Presidency and Congress were Republican and they demonstrated that they could not properly hold each other in check when they were spending too much. Now we have the reverse situation but we have the same problem times 10. I am aware of all the Republican are “for” that the Democrats are not. I voted AGAINST Obama… notice that doesn’t equate to FOR McLame. To continue to offer candidates that have their strongest point of not being the other guy is simply not good enough. If 40% of the people are conservative, that’s enough for a start. Notice that doesn’t say “Republican”. They are not the same thing and haven’t been for a long, long time.

I guess that poll factors in a full three days of tracking since the latest jobs report came out. Just wait til unemployment hits double figures.

“There’s nothing wrong with this ad, as long as it’s followed by ads laying out Republican principles for economic growth, fiscal responsibility, and getting government out of energy production.”

Well said, Ed. I can easily vote against Obama; I’d like a reason to vote for Republicans.

Where have you been, “Ogabe” has been a member of the oldie-but-a-goodie crowd for months now.

Exit question: Is it good form to whine about “Ogabe” after you used the term “Iquitarod” for Sarah Palin in the same thread?

And the problem being??

Jeff from WI on July 8, 2009 at 9:56 AM

we need to certainly run hard against Democrats, but we also need to give voters reasons to vote for Republicans.

I’m sorry, but you’re a moron.

The Dems didn’t win with this. Do you think the 52% voted for Socialism and more taxes?

The Dems won by repeating “Bush Lied” over and over and over and over and over. They followed this with “Change”. But, they never described the change.

We must hammer Obama now.

By God vote for us Republicans. For although we spend money like drunken sailors, and we are running head long towards socialism we are doing it at a much slower pace than the Dims. Yup it works for me.

Fine ad.

But at some point things are going to get passed with the magical sixty and it’s not going to be the Democrat 60.

Bayh and Landrieu or some other mix is going to vote NO on something but their votes will be replaced by Snowe and Collins.

There is no good ad for that scenerio.

Jeff from WI on July 8, 2009 at 9:47 AM

No, the key to winning is having a clear coherent message that challenges the status quo. You can’t be “positive” and attack the filthy liar on his out-of-control spending or his massive plans to destroy healthcare. There is nothing positive about the way the stimulus money has been squandered on political spoils for the filthy liar’s cronies.

I want a reprise of that LBJ ad featuring a mushroom cloud not pictures of John McCain wearing a sweater and hugging a kitten.
