“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club.”
Update: The man who made this statement, Valley Swim Club president John Duesler, has the same name as the man who ran the O-Positive Obama campaign blood drive in Philly before Barack Obama’s inauguration. That information comes from — of all places — Democratic Underground. It may or may not be the same John Duesler, but there’s only one person by that name listed in the phone book in the Philly area.

OK then… Well, it would appear that you are actually talking about class instead of race. That said, if these kids paid to come, why should they get kicked out?
Oh, and here’s a tip. Next time you see a black person, just stay on the other side of the road. We wouldn’t want you to catch their cooties.

Well, there’s this little valve on the side. Get your gauge out, take the cap off the valve and measure the pressure. If it’s too high, release pressure. If it’s too low, pump it up.

Wasn’t there a black slave population in Mexico once, and after being freed the population dwindled to nothing while the black population in the U.S. multiplied. What happened to those former slaves did they just go home? Isn’t there ethnic cleansing of blacks by hispanics in S. Californ right now? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

You say this as if every race doesn’t pull the same crap. It swings both ways, but only certain groups have the thought police deciding when its a crime and when its not.

Yes Lox. I work so many hours and by the time I get to comment here at night either the thread is all talked out ect..
I should check out the site and I am not saying that there isn’t a race issue here, but from my experience in what I did I see things not just black and white (no pun intended)
The statement about “complexion” was not good. I do not doubt that race issues are a problem but I also get tired of it constantly being used like it is a “major” crisis we all are facing. Unity? I have never seen so much divisiveness sense this administration. In my mind, race relations have been set back. As a conservative voter last year I was called a racist for the first time in my life. I suppose I look at things slightly different now.
I was a lifeguard and worked for the city. I saw somethings that were not to my liking. Not a race issue but it is not a day care after school problem. We had kids that could not swim and the liability was great. For a few dollars we were the daycare. I don’t prefer to go into it further.

Fees at the Valley Swim Club for weekday membership (Monday through Thursday) are $215 for one adult and $30 for each child.
Full-Time membership is $395 for the first adult and $110 for a second member, adult or child. Additional children are $55 each. There is also an application fee of $75.
First of all, I think the president of the club used a most unfortunate choice of words in his statement: “There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion… and the atmosphere of the club.” I truly want to believe he was referring to the family environment of the club and not the skin color of the campers.
However, if I paid that much money to take my kids to a pool, I might get a little upset to see an entire bus load of day campers, of ANY color, invading what I believed was a private, family oriented pool club. It’s the quantity (65 kids!), the noise level and possibly inadequate adult supervision that I would be concerned about.
I honestly hope the club changes their mind about allowing the day camp to swim there. Perhaps if they posted a notice, something like: Tuesdays from 10 AM to 2 PM “Camp Whatever” will be using the pool. It would give members the option to come on that day or not.
Barb Dwyer on July 9, 2009 at 12:05 AM
I’ve interacted with racists of many different races, ethnicities and nationalities. Sometimes, it’s simply ignorance. Sometimes, it’s real hostile bigotry. And sometimes, what is claimed to be racism is not racism at all.
If I had been supervising their pool and there was a behavior problem with some of the new children, I would have talked to them and their counselor. I would have names of those who were misbehaving. I would have descriptions of the behavior problem. I wouldn’t kick the whole group out after one visit without attempting to solve the problem. But they did. That and the images on their website is what gets me suspicious of racism.

my brain is broken. when i first read the headline about changing the complexion (the rest of the headline wasn’t there) i went the michael jackson route and figured the kids’ parents didn’t want the kids swimming and possibly bleaching their skin a paler color, which didn’t make any sense to me. note to self: read the entire article – t least the entire headline.

Typical liberals! They’ll proudly vote for a black President but won’t let their kids swim in the same pool with black kids. I’ll bet Duesler got dozens of angry phone calls from members demanding he revoke the deal with the day camp. And I’ll bet every one of them voted for Obama.
rockmom on July 9, 2009 at 12:20 AM
It may just be a question of numbers and staffing. I will wait until all the info is in before painting Dr Duesler, Obot that he is, a great big racist.
Nowhere on the site did I see a form for daycamp group registrations.
clnurnberg on July 9, 2009 at 12:20 AM
They should have thought of that before they took the money. After all, they took money from an organization, not a family. I’m sure the arrangements were acceptable to John before the kids arrived and the fears of “rape” or whatever other posters have put up here kicked in with his well-heeled customers.
Reminds me of the Johnathan Club here in LA. Lots of upper-crust judges and legislators were members, and then their (previous) membership criteria got out…

From a Philly article on the matter. 60 kids is a lot of kids, and if the club was not going to arrange a separate swim time, which is logical and what most clubs do to accomodate teams and camps, they should not have accepted the money.

How many “kids” did the contract specify?
How big was the pool?
What were the ages and swimming abilities of the group.
What pool times were specified in the contract?
What was the conduct of the group?
Its been my experience at the local YMCA pool, that a tight pool schedule is an absolute necessity in order to accomodate the many different and competing needs of the members. Such as mom’s teaching tykes groups, elderly rehab groups, child swim instruction groups, etc etc…
Also, there are just so many lanes in a pool, and oftimes members go there at specific times to swim laps(each in a dedicated lap-swim lane). Free swim times for large groups, if not coordinated and planned carefully in advance, whatever the the groups complexion, can overwhelm even a large pool. Moreover the safety provided by the duty lifeguard/s may become inadequate when more swimmers are in the pool than they can manage or protect.
Beyond a possible poor choice of words by a manager, I suspect that there was a larger group than was anticipated by the staff, which strained the pools safety environment.
I think, this thread topic should of had one of AP’s Raw Steaks attached so that the feeding frenzy, could have been seen for what it was– just another premature ejaculation by the “holier than thou” contingent, and latina’s like earnesto.

And the camp has already found a new place where they will have the pool to themselves at the needed times. The Girard School has plenty of space.
No, this doesn’t absolve Valley of dumb decision making and I’m sure they will abandon the practice of accepting large camp groups in the future.
clnurnberg on July 9, 2009 at 12:37 AM
Here’s an allegation from one of the black kids’ parents:
When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool,” Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. “The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately.”
Now that is just obvious BS. No one in their right mind would make such a statement in 2009. Especially Philadelphia: the city is 60% black, so it’s not like “minorities” are an exotic variant.
My reading: black kids were so loud and rowdy that they were ejected and of course that immediately becomes race issue.

Racial discussions and religion I stay away from. Rarely do I find we can have an open honest discussion and people explode.
I see that you said earlier you would have a talk with those misbehaving. Should it be a race or specific class, they bury it. People are so afraid to be called racist ect.. so in my mind it creates an on going issue. Everyone tip toes around anything that could create a backlash.

I have not read many of the comments, so maybe it has already been covered, but does anyone know for sure what meaning of “complexion” the guy was using?
There is the “color, texture, and general appearance of the skin, esp. of the face” usage, which would presumably mean race, but also there is the “general appearance or nature; character; aspect” usage.
If what he had in mind was the “general appearance or nature; character; aspect” usage, which would not necessarily mean race at all, maybe just too many yelling, and maybe rowdy, kids, then I think that many here may have “the rope around his neck” a “little” too fast and a “little” too tight.
KentAllard on July 9, 2009 at 12:50 AM
The Camp paid $1900 for a pool membership (which is the price of a single family membership) and thinks they can bring 50 to 60 kid every day to swim?
This isn’t about race….it is about a Day Camp trying to cheat a Swim Club.
But a bad choice of words there.

My observations on pools and pool behavior:
1)Never go to the pool before 3pm. Day Camps overcrowd the pools. If they have a 1;10 ratio of campers to children consider yourself lucky.
2)Pools that have concessions stands tucked into a corner of the pool area are more likely used for Romeo and Juliet moments than for eating food.
3) You will not only find hair, leaves etc at pool but if you look closely – condoms
4)Lifeguards only blow whistles for dunking, or innocent horsing around. They are never blown for a boy walking behind his girlfriend (of the day) holding her breasts that are popping out of a too big/small bikini. Whistles are never blown for skin to skin contact between a boy and girl from head to toy -even if they are under 13. When you ask they will tell you that they are not the hormone police, that they only whistle for “life-saving” situations.
5)Vulgar language only warrants a timeout if it is directed at a lifeguard.
6) I won’t even get into the bathroom cleanliness issues because none of them are clean.
7) Parents are not required to be there unless they are under 10.
8) Games where teens and preteens try to take off someone’s swimsuits are a regular visual.
This stuff happens the most between 12-4. After 4 more families start showing up and the the “unwatched” start leaving.
If any of this happened the first time these kids swam, or if they saw a drug deal (dealers like using kids) then I can understand the decision.
If it is just race then shame on the swim club president.

Somehow, I don’t buy this story. What happened to this new “era” of racial harmony Obama was supposed to bring with his election? Is it just me or do race relations seem worse now? I have had in my ancestry “discrimination.”My Grandmother came from Sweden in 1920 under conscription. She was forced to give my mother up for adoption because she could not afford both my aunt and my mother. Am I asking for reparations?I’ve had about all I can take when it comes to “discrimination.” Sorry for the rant.

I have to agree. I mentioned up thread. I think it has been the identity politics and purposely pitting of people against each other. Race and class. I have seen it and it makes me sad/angry. I say we just went way backwards. If someone knows my conservative view points- for the first time I am racist, cold hearted and so many nice compliments. It pisses me off to be honest.

I know I have been trigger happy at times, but unless it’s blatant, I prefer using at least a “three strikes” rule for bigotry, and it’s even better to have a longer pattern of behavior to observe. So, I confess I amy have judged too quickly here. But it just feels wrong to me.
Discussion is always good. Yelling can get tiring or disturbing. Threats and charges can get scary.
Loxodonta on July 9, 2009 at 1:09 AM
Again, I have not read most of the comments, and just scanned the main story (mainly because I do not find these kind of stories very interesting, nor very relevant to the “greater scheme of things), so maybe I am missing some things here, but I would want to hear from the guy who said “complexion” and what he has to say, before hanging him. I recall a city council meeting someplace where some guy said something about paperwork going into a “Black Hole” in some government bureaucracy and “suddenly” it was all about race.
Since “complexion” was used along with “atmosphere” it sounds to me like it could have just referred to a lot of rowdy and screaming kids, not necessarily racism, so I am not ready to hang the guy yet.

What’s wrong with Florida?

What is wrong with Fl?…lots. I predict it is California about 20 years ago. I was born in Cali and raised there half my life, so I am not just guessing.
Yes, i work in the health care industry..I just smile and nod and keep my political opinions to myself. I may rupture one day :)
