“There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club.”
Update: The man who made this statement, Valley Swim Club president John Duesler, has the same name as the man who ran the O-Positive Obama campaign blood drive in Philly before Barack Obama’s inauguration. That information comes from — of all places — Democratic Underground. It may or may not be the same John Duesler, but there’s only one person by that name listed in the phone book in the Philly area.

Absolutely, a true example of bipartisanship. I know I would donate. I know someone’s going to come through of these kids. Maybe find someone who will give them a day a week exclusively. I know kids need to see the real world but this is too real and they are too young.

Walt Kowalski was one of the most admirable characters in any movie I’ve seen.

Pennsylvanians also like to have sexual relations with members of their family, including the dog. Well those Pennsylvanians who vote Democrat anyway.

Because it seemed awfully…uh…strident as a response to someone commenting about PA. I’m not for the ban in most cases so maybe a helpful reminder to dial it back will keep the guy from getting the boot.

That’s what I’ve heard too.
Sporty1946 on July 8, 2009 at 10:59 PM
I’m waiting 48 hours on this one. Not a lot there except a profoundly poor word choice (which smells of classism even if accepted charitably). Maybe it’s sweeps time for Philly local news, which can dig pretty low.
While as a private club they have the legal right to discriminate, as a practical matter they couldn’t do so with contracts like the one it appears they made with the camp. (Nor, of course, is it right for them to do so. Wrong and illegal are not always the same.)
Allegedly other camps were also turned away, and there appears to be at least one non-white person in the pictures on the club’s web site, where no hint of racial restrictions appears amidst their membership and visitor information. Huntingdon Valley is a weird little town, but it is also a suburb right on the border of Philadelphia, so neither city kids nor blacks are a strange sight. It may be that, however inartfully expressed, and however poorly handled, this really is about nothing.
raybury on July 8, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Wow, I grew up right near this swim club and would not at all be surprised if the bleeding hearts have trouble practicing what they preach. Being a dem, Obama supporter, green environment support is all about image not substance. The locations of two of those blood donation centers are located in this area as well. I think Duesler is classic liberal hypocrite, doesn’t shock me at all.

I don’t know how racism can be “fought” with racism. Never understood that.
Loxodonta on July 8, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Ernesto,
Piss off! You know damn well latinos in Mexico are some of the worst racist people on the planet. My brother, married to a Mexicana, tells me how they even have it down to shades of brown and how much indian blood you have in you. It’s sickening when this country is accused of being racist, when most of the rest of the world is 10 times worse.
Back to the cave troll, and wait patiently for the next Cuda thread.

As I said earlier, unless this is a truly HUGE pool, the addition of 60 extra kids all at one time must be planned for in advance with extra supervision. The pool may not be large enough to comfortably deal with this.
And membership details take care of providing guards and staff. It’s not free and undersupervised pools are not safe!

Maybe there were just too many black kids and they want to enforce a ratio consistent with the general population regardless of qualifications. In other words, they are trying to enforce a racial quota system, which would make this reverse reverse-racism—or racism cubed. /s

Philadelphia is one of, if not the most racist city in the NE US. I know because I grew up there and still visit friends and/or family at least twice a week. I moved south about 30 miles to Wilmington De. in 1985 and was amazed at how well all races got along here.
Bill Blizzard on July 8, 2009 at 11:21 PM
Yeah, the issue here really is the owner’s statement…about “the complexion”…not that simply the kids were denied a swim.
Although, as a lifetime swimmer, diver, and water rat, I would have been utterly disappointed if I were one of those kids.
JetBoy on July 8, 2009 at 11:21 PM
That’s probably true. Don’t pool laws specify the maximum number of people in the pool depending on the size?
I remember years ago reading a story in a paper (it was a long time ago) about a child who drowned and it was so crowded that nobody noticed the child struggling maybe because of that.
You have to keep one eye on your kid at all times at a younger age. Tougher when you have to watch more than one.

bazil9 on July 8, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Look, it seems pretty obvious what happened here. 60 inner-city black kids show up at a private club dominated by affluent housewives and their kids and dominate the pool – being loud, rowdy, etc. The wealthy enlightened, “liberal” Obama-voting housewives are appaplectic. They go to the management and scream about paying lots of money to be members of a quite “private” club that now has 60 inner-city kids running wild while day-camp councellors try to coral them. They threaten the Management they will be dropping their memberships if the “problem” isn’t corrected immediately.
The President signed the deal because he assumed with his liberal Obama-voting membership, it wouldn’t be a problem. He was wrong. As payback for his disappointment in his members, he takes an intentional shot at them as racists.
Is anybody really surprised in the least? It’s as much about class as it is race but it is about race.
TheBigOldDog on July 8, 2009 at 11:23 PM
You’re welcome. This can be a really supportive place. Best advice for anyone here; learn to recognize the “Mentor types,” (who will help you,) and the “Playground Bullies” (who will cut you.)
Many good folks here.
massrighty on July 8, 2009 at 11:24 PM
Complexion be damned. The kids camp paid in advance for the use of the pool and facilities.I’d litigate the crap out of the owner/operator of the pool. Perhaps obtain it in an out of court settlement. Demand it if it went to trial.
coldwarrior on July 8, 2009 at 11:24 PM
Many pools arrange for special times for large private groups to swim in order to manage this effectively. They have to think of safety.
This guy’s statement was stupid, though, and I am thrilled that he is a big Obot
clnurnberg on July 8, 2009 at 11:24 PM
Take it in stride. I suffer by being from the state that elected Al Franken and so must occasionally defend the dwindling number of Minnesotans who don’t howl at trees and worship the memory of Wellstone.
Just remind yourself that, although your state elected Murtha, at least you’re not from Wisconsin (I’m talkin’ about you, Jeff).

Americannodash on July 8, 2009 at 11:25 PM
But wouldn’t they have thought of that when they wrote the contract and accepted the money? They would have had the specifics and probably hired extra life guards.
Cindy Munford on July 8, 2009 at 11:25 PM
Why? Because Pennsylvania is a northern state? Lemme tell ya something. I grew up in Pennsylvania. I now live in Arkansas. I’d like to say this report about the kids getting kicked out of the pool surprises me, but sadly, it doesn’t. I observed a whole lot more racism living in Pennsylvania than I ever have in the South. Is it a generalization to say racism is commonplace in PA? I guess so (altho John Murtha seems to unfazed by the characterization), but so is the assumption that some states are more enlightened than others by virtue of their geography.

Day Camp, for hose of you unfamiliar with it, is as its name implies. You get on a bus and go to different places each day for a good chunk of the Summer. In Boston the camps are run by non-profits like the Boys and Girl’s clubs and neighborhood houses. They fees are kept as low as possible with subsidies to encourage participation. The parents don’t go with the kids. In fact, most of the kids are from single parent homes and this is like daycare for older kids…
TheBigOldDog on July 8, 2009 at 11:27 PM
I don’t believe the story. I just don’t. I believe they weren’t welcomed but I don’t believe they were kicked out and told they were being kicked out because they have the wrong complexion (black).
CCRWM on July 8, 2009 at 11:27 PM
Allegedly the contract allowed the camp 90 minutes every monday. I assume it was a preset time. I would love to see all the details and see if both sides played by the prearranged rules.

I doubt it’s the same John Duesler who shilled for Obama. THIS John Duesler seems to have a firm grip on reality, which would preclude him from stumping for O’Chimpy.
Look, you’re relaxing around a private pool in a civilized, dignified environment. All of a sudden you have 40-50 screaming, hyper-active “African-Americans” making a mad dash for all you hold sacred. Does this EVER happen in reverse? Not if you value your Caucasian life it doesn’t!
These parents have read the papers and watched the news. Should we wait unitl their 15-year old daughter is assaulted and gang-raped before we “protest too much”???
Let’s discuss racial reality before we bend over backward trying to tie this “pool guy” to Obama so we can just wash our hands of this.
David2.0 on July 8, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Right on. My best friend who lives in Newark, CA is from Philadelphia. He tells me stories and stuff about how really racist everybody is there. It’s worse there. It ain’t anywhere near that bad in Alabama where I lived and worked for over 5 years. The people in the south are nicer than Detroit, Philadelphia and the SF Bay Area. Just try to rent an apartment or room in a house from a 1st generation Chinese immigrant.
