Obama on Smart Grid: No longer about jobs

Stung by the utter failure of Porkulus to stem the tide of joblessness, the Obama administration has quietly dropped its “jobs” argument for funding federal projects. ABC’s Rick Klein notices that the Smart Grid project, one of the most highly touted programs for job creation by Barack Obama and Joe Biden, has had that requirement removed:
When Vice President Joe Biden announced a new $3.3 billion grant program to upgrade the nation’s electricity network, the rationale was simple: “This is jobs — jobs,” he said in April.
But the Obama administration is now saying it will not take the potential for job creation into account in “rating” proposed projects for possible funding — after initially saying that would be a primary consideration.
In April, when the Energy Department first announced regulations for companies that wish to apply for “Smart Grid Investment Grants,” “job creation and retention” was among the explicit criteria. …
But late last month, the department quietly modified the criteria to take the job piece out. As the department explained in a June 26 set of Frequently Asked Questions:
“These criteria differ significantly from those presented within the [Notice of Intent]. First, DOE removed the criterion on the extent of jobs creation and now will require applicants, as stipulated within the Recovery Act, to report quarterly on the number of jobs created and retained.”
It’s not hard to understand why this got pulled, especially given the timing. By the end of June, the Obama administration had realized that unemployment continued to rise despite all of the pork projects it had funded through Porkulus. The next week’s report from the BLS showed joblessness rising to 9.5%, proving that the Porkulus approach wouldn’t work to create jobs at all.
Now the White House wants to make it all about the technology. That’s fine; the national electrical grid needs revamping, and it’s one of the few projects in Porkulus that will help build a stronger private sector by securing the electrical and electronic infrastructure, as well as eventually saving energy. But their retreat from “jobs, jobs, jobs,” shows that the White House understands that they own rising unemployment, and that their program isn’t helping to stem it at all.
Of course, it’s difficult to trust economic policy to someone who can’t even count the letters in the word “jobs”, as we saw last October:

Since they have given ground on “job creation” will they now push for legislation based solely on “just because” or perhaps “why not”?

When the State creates jobs, the State can eliminate jobs. To highlight the State’s creation of jobs, is to highlight the dependence of the worker – to the State.
Let a free market create the jobs – to hell with the State, and to hell with the State’s jobs.
OhEssYouCowboys on July 8, 2009 at 3:15 PM
“Jobs” is now a three-letter word because central planning and the DOE have now determined that the number 4 is racially insensitive and ethnically biased.
Don’t ask why… it just is… Racist.

The Obama administration is truly making the case for going off the grid. Here’s goes my sci fi mind again, but a technical upgrade to the smart grid: appliances that tell the government how much energy you are using: the ability of the government to “cap” just how much energy you can use in a day. Am I the only one here that doesn’t trust this concept?
Smart grid, run by a dumbarse. Would that be an oxymoron?

Karl Rove’s got a good graph out that shows how stupid the Obama emphasis on “jobs” was. It’s going to bite him very hard, if it gets traction.
It was never about jobs, and rising unemployment should demonstrate what liars these stimulus-pushers are.

wait for the requirement to slap an “Obama Smart Grid” on every piece of electronic equipment. You know, just steal a page from the “Eisenhower Interstate System” stupid signs all across our nation.
gatorboy on July 8, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Folks… the “smart grid” is not about building new power lines… its about information and control.
Their idea is that they will be able to monitor power flow into businesses and homes more efficiently, and therefore be able to bring more, or less, electricity generation online at any given time, as any electricity generated, but not used, is wasted (can’t store it).
In other words, they wish to take out any “slop” in the system… thus saving the resources we use to create the energy in the first place.
What this really means is power will no longer be reliable.
Currently we have excess generation online, because we don’t know exactly how much power is needed. In order to save funds, they wish to take this excess OFFLINE…
Problem is that it will still take TIME for offline power to come online… even if you know about the need immediatly.
Add in that Solar, and Wind, are NOT CONSISTANT… as wind gusts and lulls happen… and clouds cover solar arrays… and you will have the system over powered, or underpowered, based on both ends of the production cycle (production and use).
Without excess generation ONLINE, get used to brownouts folks.

Upstater85 on July 8, 2009 at 3:34 PM
It’s not the same. They’re planning to use remote-controlled units to regulate (control) the amount of electricity individual households can use over a given period of time. You will not be able to keep your house at 72 degrees anymore, because your air conditioner (or heater) would use more than your quota of electricity.
The control units are already designed, built, and ready to go. They’re incredibly insecure, meaning that a hacker can easily turn off your electricity, but they don’t seem to care.

Are we going to completely quit talking about our grieving the loss of MJ. I’m STILL so upset! Do they have an 800 number so I can talk with a trained counselor?
Jeff from WI on July 8, 2009 at 3:37 PM
It’s quite simple. If Food, Gas, and Energy go through the roof, than people with jobs won’t be able to afford paying for these “luxuries.” Therefore, if one keeps job growth at a minimum, ignorant, unemployed individuals will not have to feel the pain of buying such luxuries as non-Gubmint toilet paper (Al Gore’s “recycled” toilet paper).
Upstater85 on July 8, 2009 at 3:37 PM
Your first statement hit it, but you zigged when you should have zagged afterwards.
It is all about control and information. Gather information about who is using energy, how much they’re using, when they’re using it, etc…
This all culminates in one thing: How much that user will pay. Use a lot of energy? You’ll pay a higher rate. Use energy at peak times? Pay a higher rate. Not using energy? Pay a higher rate.
It also provides data for Cap and Trade, so they know how much and who to “charge” for the carbon emissions.
It has nothing to do with supply.

The smart grid, while a novel and attractive idea has several flaws.
1) It is easily “hackable” making our power transmission systems actually less secure.
2) There is the ability to control the amount of power any individual or business recieves, a feature that could be abused in the future.
3) It also provides an extraordinary amount of info to the government on demand, if exploited; there may be privacy issues involved.
4) And last, but not least, it is a plum payoff to GE for their propagandistic support of Ogabe during the campaign through NBC and MSNBC…
So it’s a great idea, but needs more refinement before implementation…

How bout ‘no’?
The problem with the electric grid is that the prime users (cities) are too far away from the prime producers (power plants). I don’t care what kind of grid you have, you’re going to have serious losses!
The only way to cut down electricity losses in a ’smart’ grid is to (a) use superconducting lines (which at this point must be supercooled) OR (b) put the powerplants closer to the cities (or vice versa).
Any other implication of a ’smart’ grid smacks far too close to 1984 for me to touch with a 10 foot rubber pole.

I’m talking about their overall rationale for doing this in the first place… and how even their initial arguements make no sense.
The ONLY way to save on energy costs is to take production offline… and the only ways they can do that is to either limit the amount of energy you can use… or reduce the amount of unused energy we already create in the system…

Lot’s of examples throughout history. You simply turn on the presses, and start printing money. When Lil’ Timmy and Bernanke do that, you know the end game is near. It’s the last resort of the financially inept.
I would expect the presses to start running when China stops laughing at Lil’ Timmy AND stops buying US Treasury debt.
Has anyone really thought about why the Stimulus money hasn’t been spent yet?
Hmmmm?
Before they can write the check for all this stimulation, they have to get the cash. They’ve been trying to sell nearly a trillion dollars in new debt to China, who is fresh out of confidence in the US dollar. Why is The One in Russia? He’s hawking US T-bonds in order to fund Porkulus.
