Confidence in Obama, economy still dropping

Yesterday, I noted that the Rasmussen poll with a Barack Obama “passion index” of -3 still had yet to fully poll after last week’s unemployment figures were published. Today’s rolling approval index is the first to have all of its data taken after the announcement that joblessness continues to increase, and the passion index has hit its lowest level yet. Obama’s approval has come close to statistical parity, too:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 32% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-seven percent (37%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –5.
The number who strongly disapprove inched up another point to the highest level measured to date and the overall Approval Index is at the lowest level yet for Obama (see trends).
In the wake of last week’s disappointing report on job loss, consumer confidence has fallen to the lowest level in two months. The Rasmussen Investor Index shows investor confidence falling to the lowest level in three months. The number of investors who say the economy is getting worse jumped from 43% before the jobs report to 51% today.
Barack Obama still has a 52% approval rating, but his overall disapproval rating has hit 48%. There are no more undecideds at the moment. That four-point range is just outside of the three-point margin of error, although to be accurate, that MOE applies to both numbers individually, which would make the overall MOE six points. That would already put Obama in a dead heat on approval, but even with the more modest application, he’s heading there quickly.
Rasmussen is not the only pollster noticing that consumers have lost confidence in this administration’s ability to deal with the economy. ABC says that consumer confidence has hit a new low for the past 24 years and looks as though it will continue dropping, corroborating Rasmussen (via Yid with Lid):
Consumer confidence is within striking distance of its worst in weekly polls since late 1985 for the third straight week.
The ABC News Consumer Comfort Index stands at -52 on its scale of +100 to -100, 2 points from the lowest on Jan. 25. The index has spent the last three weeks below -50, territory it’s seen only 14 times in over 1,220 weeks of polls, with eight of those coming this year alone.
Positive ratings of the buying climate dropped this week, down 4 points to 22 percent, matching the largest one-week drop ever. In 23 years of weekly polls it’s fallen this far this fast only eight other times. The other two components of the index – ratings of the economy and personal finances – held near their historic lows.
Continued weakness in the job market isn’t helping confidence. The unemployment rate increased in June to 9.5 percent, the highest in 26 years. In a separate measure, the government reported that 467,000 jobs were lost last month, surpassing analysts’ expectations. In the first half of the year, 3.4 million jobs have been cut from the nation’s payrolls.
ABC has this handy chart in its PDF analysis of consumer confidence levels:
If the Obama administration plans to argue for a bigger stimulus, they will find a highly skeptical audience for the plan. Their $800 billion master plan has already failed, and unlike Obama, most Americans know better than to throw good money after bad. As unemployment rises and Obama attempts to expand government, expect to see these linked numbers crater in the weeks ahead.
Update: Gallup has Obama at 56%, down sharply since the beginning of the month. (h/t Desmond L)
Update II: Fred Bauer looks at some state polls and sees Obama losing independents rapidly.

I’ve seen Obumper stickers on every make and model you can think of, from Cadillacs to Mrs. Brady’s wood-paneled station wagon.
I’m hoping that some of his voters got that logo tattooed on their butts or something.

It’s an interesting question: Does the administration know its policies will ruin the economy and the dollar?
jazz_piano on July 8, 2009 at 5:19 PM
I wish I could remember where I saw the study, I want to say Michael Barone. But the gist being, the beauty of the America system is that it DOES swing back and forth, naturally compensating for problems in the government.
LastRick on July 8, 2009 at 5:19 PM
What I find so astonishing is that Obama’s administration is channeling two themes: things are actually showing some improvement and the stimulus just needs more time. I’m no economist, but I think the economy is just drifting right now trying to determine which stupid agenda items Obama is going to enactmet before it eventually reacts downward.
Independents will be complaining by Labor Day, and they’ll be screaming by Thanksgiving. To paraphrase the explanation of the pork bellies market by Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy’s character) in Trading Places, “Hey, we’re losing all our damn money, and Christmas is around the corner, and I ain’t gonna have no money to buy my son the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip! And my wife ain’t gonna make love to me if I got no money!”
Then, we’ll see the bottom falling out.

That’s the interesting question. IMO, he’s crashing the economy on purpose. So my Exit Question would be based on this: The press is going to have to notice sooner or later that his popularity is tanking and his policies are destructive.
If the press starts reporting these things, then most of the democrats in Congress will have to choose between supporting a loser and keeping their jobs. They’ll stop cooperating with Obama and shoving through his nonsense without reading it — for self-preservation.
So my Exit Question is: What does Obama do then? If, as I suggest, he’s destroying the economy on purpose, then he’s obviously not done yet. How can he continue if he loses the support of Congress? Will he use the Czars to do it?

Exit question: Will this latest tumble in the polls hamstring his administration grandiose plans or do they not worry about it until early 2010?
Thunderstorm129 on July 8, 2009 at 5:09 PM
Until he is repeatedly humiliated in public I think he will use the polls to push even harder left. He is arrogant enough to think he is failing because his agenda is to moderate.

Exactly. This man his hell bent on being a dictator. He won’t stop because a peasley few million don’t have a job, or any prospects in the near future, for a job. He’s doing exactly what he’s set out to do.
capejasmine on July 8, 2009 at 5:22 PM
I’d say it creates problems. The world has learned that promises made by one administration may be broken by the next (e.g., Vietnam, possibly Iraq). And if this swing left goes unchecked, the pendulum will pull the whole clock down with it.
The British threw Churchill out in one of these swings immediately after WWII. I don’t like it! (:

The Socialists are not going to stop pushing the agenda. they figure if they can get it in place no matter how badly it hurts people and damages the country it can’t be undone. They may get voted out but the damage will be done. And as a result over time people will become more and more dependent on government and the Socialists will get back in power. Its all about power and humbling America. Our first, but not last, anti-American president.

It’s interesting that Obama has been most often compared to FDR and Lincoln, who presided over the nation’s two bloodiest wars, and wielded a degree of domestic power that would make any of us uncomfortable today.

It would be a dangerous assumption that Congress won’t support his agenda. But, if Congress does turn on him, I have no doubt he’ll use Executive authority, legal or not, to bypass the Congress and Judiciary. The foundation for that is being poured as we speak in the form of Czars who have no accountability to Congress and wield enormous power.
He is presently stacking the deck with the IGs by weeding out anyone who examines any “strange” occurences in the various agencies.
Never forget; he is a Socialist and has no allegiance to the US Constitution. It is a barrier to his agenda.
BobMbx on July 8, 2009 at 5:27 PM

PappaMac on July 8, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Dick Morris made this point on Hannity’s radio program a while back. He said Obama basically knows he’s not getting reelected so he’s going to push as hard as hell to get all the liberal holy grails of legislation passed before he gets kicked to the curb. That way, he can go down in lib history as the guy who completely reshaped America (for the worse, obviously).
Scary.

SHARPTOOTH on July 8, 2009 at 5:31 PM
Maybe, just maybe, his ratings are tanking faster than he thought they would. See my post above about Morris’ comment on his agenda. Maybe he thought the stimulus would give him time to get healthcare and cap and trade rammed through but he’s dropping faster than the thought.
I mean, Pelosi pushed Cap and trade through the house unsure of the votes. They said that wasn’t like her. She wants to know she’s gonna win before submitting it for vote. Seems like urgency to me.
I say the ‘rats start jumping ship. The numbers are extremely ominous. From the deficit, to the CBO numbers to Obama’s polling. He may start losing support rapidly. And that may just save us from an even worse situation.

Actually, I’m laughing my ass off and rolling on the floor. Listening to Barry’s MSM trying to put a positive spin on all this bad news. Reminds me of the good old days in 2004-5 when the economy was humming along and all we heard from the MSM was that the economy was in the toilet. Well now it is in the toilet and all we hear is that things are going great thanks to Barry and Company.

“although to be accurate, that MOE applies to both numbers individually, which would make the overall MOE six points.”
No! First of all, standard deviations don’t add. Second of all, the standard deviations will always be exactly the same. Here is all we can say: There is a 95% chance that the true proportion of people who approve of Obama is in the range 49-55%, and oppose in the range 45-51%. Of course, knowing one (absent “no opinion”s) implies the other.

I hate to say it, but, the idea of universal sufferage is very flawed. There are three things that should get you the right to vote.
Military Service with an honerable discharge.
Ownership of private real property.
Providing a regular job for someone else.
If you can’t meet at least one of those requirements, you shouldn’t be voting. And, you shouldn’t hold any public office unless you can vote.

Understand this:
Let me repeat that again:
You know how stupid Obama is? He’s so stupid he doesn’t even realize that he’s stupid. So he’ll deal with this problem like he’s dealt with other problems. He’ll figure that the problem is that there is not enough smart people managing the economy, and since he’s the smartest person he knows, he’ll continue to spend money and manage the economy into the ground.

A person used to have to be 21, a land owner and pass a literacy test.
It infuriates me when I hear that people are allowed to vote in a language other than English. Seriously, I’m Spanish and most of the offices are the same names with a slightly different ending anyway. And a name is the same name no matter what language the ballot is in. If they want to vote, then they should learn English, like my father did.
I’m a woman and I’ve been voting for 30 years (including primaries,) so I take it seriously and I love my right to vote.
But I have said for at least the last 20 years, that I would gladly give up my right to vote, if it would go back to when women weren’t allowed to vote.
Not the women here, obviously, but most women are not as interested in politics and they only pay attention right before an election. So they are succeptible to all the propaganda and lies.
And they usually vote with their feelings and heart and not their head and logic. And they don’t want to hear the details. Not that they are stupider than men, but they are not as interested (in general) as most men (in general). Obviously there are a good number of men who shouldn’t be voting either.
But most mature men don’t vote for someone simply because they seem “nice” or are good looking or they like the candidate’s wife. I have heard intelligent women say these things. Reasons for their vote.
And most women vote more liberal than most men. The old “gender gap” thing. And you can see the increase in liberal politicians being elected almost at the beginning of women’s right to vote. Increasing as more and more women began to vote and not vote like their husbands.
I know this will never happen, and probably shouldn’t, but it does pop into my minds sometimes.

PS I love Sarah and would vote for her in a heartbeat. Don’t get me wrong with my last comment. I love my right to vote. It is just an observation and a frustration with how my gender votes.

Trouble in Liberal never-neverland. Just breaks your heart doesn’t it?
The geniuses are finally catching up to what most people knew 4 months ago.
Then of course the Palin attacks started after that.
Hm, I wonder if unemployment was at 4% and the GDP was growing at 4% if the libs would be obsessing over hating her so much.
Sanford stories are gone. They’re afraid, they’re very afraid.
