AP: Hey, Obama may not have been honest about taxes after all

posted at 7:44 pm on July 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Associated Press has finally discovered math, and realizes that Barack Obama’s numbers don’t add up.  Don’t expect this to last long, but the AP finally reports what every sentient being outside the mainstream media and the Democratic Party (but I repeat myself) already understood:

President Barack Obama promised to fix health care and trim the federal budget deficit, all without raising taxes on anyone but the wealthiest Americans. It’s a promise he’s already broken and will likely have to break again. Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress have already increased tobacco taxes — which disproportionately hit the poor — to pay for extending health coverage to 4 million children in working low-income families.

Now, lawmakers are looking for more revenues to help pay for providing medical insurance to millions more who lack it at a projected cost of $1 trillion over the next decade.

The floated proposals include increasing taxes on alcohol, which could raise $62 billion over the next decade, and a new tax on sugary drinks such as soda, which could raise $52 billion. …

Obama made a firm tax pledge during the presidential campaign, repeating it numerous times in the weeks and months leading up to Election Day: no tax increases for individuals making less than $200,000 a year or couples making less than $250,000.

“Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes,” Obama told a crowd in Dover, N.H., last year.

Wow!  Not only did the AP recognize that Obama broke his pledge not to raise taxes on people below $250,000, but they also acknowledge that Democrats like regressive taxes as much as they like progressive taxes.  In fact, it would be easier to report that they just like any tax they can pass.

It gets better.   AP reporter Stephen Ohlemacher notes that the cap-and-trade bill amounts to a tax on American families, although he uses the bogus $175 per year estimate from the CBO that only includes the cost of implementing and maintaining the system.  It doesn’t count the cost increases of energy not just on the homes themselves, but on every step of the distribution chain for goods and services, which will create a significant jump in prices, which is also a sharply regressive burden as it will hit hardest those with less disposable income.

But little steps are better than no steps.  Perhaps now that the AP has admitted that Obama lied about his economic policies, they can start reporting honestly on their costs.

Eh, we’re just at the same stage the media was with Clinton in late 1993-early ’94. They’re willing to offer up a few shots because they’re miffed at him treating them as flunkies instead of as equal partners, but when the midterms near, and certainly in the run-up to 2012, they’ll come running back and the criticism will all go away.

Wow…I’ve been trying to explain exactly that to people for decades.

I’ve hired thousands of people over the course of my career. The key question in every interview has been this:
“Thinking about the kind of people you surround yourself with, what would you say is the single most important quality of character?” If the candidate did not answer, “honesty” or “integrity” within 2 seconds, they didn’t get the job.

What really concerned me, beginning in the late ’80′s, was that the younger candidates – recent college grads – started answering “compassion” and “tolerance”.

Tobacco isn’t a necessity of life. If the poor can afford cigarettes, then they can afford an increased tax on it to pay for the healthcare for poor, i.e., their children.

Here’s my question. If socialized medicine is passed and taxes are raised on soda and other things does that mean the health care program for the kids will canceled since they will have to be put in with all the others. Does this mean that the taxes put on cigarettes will expire for those that smoke?

No it doesn’t this doesn’t make sense pass health care for the kids and then socialize the rest of must take. Wonder what they are going to do with the money for the cigarette tax. Since the kids wont need their own policy that money has to go somewhere. Doesn’t it?

And the bigger the voice that reports this fraud the better. Journalists think quite highly of themselves and they don’t like to be embarrassed and they sure don’t like to admit they were wrong. Since minorities tend to be over represented amongst the poor in this country, is there any chance we can start to challenge these taxes as being racist based on the ‘disparate impact’ that results when you tax things that poor people like more than rich people?

I think that legal interpretation is stupid, but, we either get what we want or help to expose how stupid ‘disparate impact’ really is. Seems like a win-win.

Who are we trying to kid here?

This is penny-ante crap. By the end of this year, even if Obama doesn’t do one more thing, spending will have doubled and our tax base will be about half of what it was last year. And, oh, BTW,the Chinese have stopped buying our debt. Multiply all that together, and our relative tax rate will have to be not just doubled, and not quadrupled, but increased by a factor of at least 8. Which will put it somwhere right around 150% of GDP.

That’s not some “crazy conspiracy theory,” that is economics 101. I don’t claim to have some amazing gift of sight; it’s just that most people who know how to crank the numbers shut their brains down out of a self-preservation reflex before they get to the bottom line. They just sort of figure something will come along to save us. Well it won’t.

By this time next year, taxes on income and spending will be a moot point. What’s coming is a little thing called CONFISCATION. Money will literally not be worth the paper it’s printed on and the concept of “private property” will be a thing of the past. The government will have no choice. In order to satiate the majority party’s support base, it will have to take all the property from 40% of the population and give it to the 60%.

Take what you’ve got and hide it. And if you can’t hide it, sell it and buy something you can hide.

What a relief. My wife and I are known to enjoy quite a bit of roughage and, well, you know, we tend to suffer from an excess of (hoo boy) CO2. (Privacy of our own home and all.) Anyway, we were calculating the tax penalties for our gastric pleasures and were quite disturbed. Now that it is perfectly natural to lie about the numbers, we live it up – broccoli with beans every night. Whoops – wasn’t me!

logis is correct.

This is very frustrating to watch unfold.
How hard is it to see that the answer lies in massively reduced government spending and massive cuts in taxes- which fundamentally equates to freedom?
The U.S. would flourish as never before.

The problem is that politicians in general, and the Dems/libs in particular, want control. They are relentess and will never rest until they control every aspect of your lives, and that means their “owning” all the fruits of your labors- which, of course, they assume they know best how to use for the common good.
And for the sheeple, it’s as simple as believing that they are going to be taken care of, i.e., some one else is picking up the tab.

Thus the death spiral.

When they question his place of birth let me know. I’m sure the Orioles will have one the world series in four and Hades will have frozen over.

So Obama lied. AM i missing something? This guy makes Michael Jackson look pretty good. What Jackson did to little boys Obama is doing to the entire country.
