Video: Palin on Palin; Update: Fox interview added

posted at 9:36 am on July 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

CNN, ABC, and Fox got interviews with Sarah Palin in the last 24 hours. When the other interviews become available, I’ll add that to this post, but we have the CNN interview, conducted by Drew Griffen yesterday afternoon. It’s lengthy but worthwhile:

ABC has a report out on its interview, conducted by Kate Snow:

“You know conditions have really changed in Alaska in the political arena since Aug. 29, since I was tapped to run for VP. When that opposition research — those researchers really bombarded Alaska — started digging for dirt and have not let up. They’re not gonna find any dirt,” she said. “We keep proving that every time we win an ethics violation lawsuit and we’ve won every one of them. But it has been costing our state millions of dollars. It’s cost Todd and me. You know the adversaries would love to see us put on the path of personal bankruptcy so that we can’t afford to run.”

But when I asked Palin if she ever decided to pursue national office again, as she did less than a year ago when she joined Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the race for the White House, wouldn’t she encounter the same political blood sport? Can such ugliness ever be avoided?

Palin said there is a difference between the White House and what she has experienced in Alaska. If she were in the White House the “department of law” would protect her from baseless ethical allegations.

“I think on a national level your department of law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we’ve been charged with and automatically throw them out,” she said.

There is no “Department of Law” at the White House.

Another major reason that Palin said she is walking away from her first term as Alaska’s governor is because after she made the decision not to seek a second term as governor she would be a lame duck and she said she refuses to “milk” that status. She said most politicians “say it’s a paycheck, it’s a paycheck and I get to travel around. No! That’s politics as usual.”

If Palin wants us to accept this at “face value,” as she says in both the CNN and ABC interviews, then she needs to stop talking about her supposed lame-duck status. She wouldn’t have been a lame duck for 16 months. George Bush was not a lame duck in 2005, 2006, 2007, or even most of 2008 as president. In that time, Bush got two Supreme Court appointments confirmed, began holding the line on spending after the 2006 election, and most importantly kept Iraq from being abandoned by Congress. During the last two years, Bush fought off legal action by Congress and a variety of political opponents, much as the Clintons did in their last term, and neither quit to do it, even after Clinton was invited to do so by the House of Representatives.

Otherwise, the CNN shows a relaxed Palin, more herself than at any time, taking tough but fair questions from Griffen with aplomb. I don’t think this will convince those who have made up their minds one way or the other, but it’s better to have Palin answering these questions directly.

Update: Time Magazine gets the print-venue exclusive with Sarah Palin. And here’s the Fox video:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/07/07/palin-blasts-critics-resignation-announcement/

Standing astride a fishing boat she would later climb aboard to haul in fishing nets and salmon, Palin expressed bitterness at bloggers who peppered her with ethics accusations, whom she said brought government in Alaska to a grinding halt.

“The critics want to put you on a course of personal bankruptcy, so you can’t afford to serve,” she said, calling the attacks “bull crap.”

“Average, hard-working Americans need to be able to get out there, unrestrained, and fight for what is right,” she said. “Fight for energy independence and national security, fight for a smaller government instead of this big government overgrowth that Obama is ushering in.”

Palin also offered criticism of the Washington, D.C., political establishment, and even the Republican Party, which nominated her to be vice president last year.

“Obsessive partisanship” has hurt the party, she said, striking a more independent beat than the partisan tune she sang on the campaign trail.

“We have so many people who offer advice, but I’m going to continue to be, whether some of them like it or not, pretty darn independent, and not get wrapped up into a strong political machine that hasn’t been extremely successful in some ways.”

There is no such language as Austrian, either.

Let’s see….

-her legislature had passed just 19 of her 450 legal proposals (even rotten murkowski with a 20% approval rating had hundreds of laws passed)

-she spent 80% of her time in court because of alaska’s unique law that allows anyone to sue any elected official anytime

-she spent more than $1,000 a DAY on lawyers to handle these ethics complaints

-her legislature was so “adult” that one of their biggest complaints of sarah in 2009 was that she didn’t deliver them BAGELS ANYMORE!!!!!!!!

Want more?

Couple of thoughts: Any way you slice it, this is a risky move for her, although I don’t think it will permanently hurt her.

I sort of think that on top of the fending off all the “ethics” complaints, she and her people probably also took into account the future possibility of ever more, more vicious, more nasty complaints, and the possibility that something might end up sticking, even if only on a technicality. That would probably do more damage in the long run that this resignation will.

In any case, I still don’t think we’ve seen the last of her, and I think, hope, and pray she will be successful.

There is no “Department of Law” at the White House.

Haven’t watched the vid yet, and of course there isn’t technically a “Dept. of Law” in the Executive Branch. I’m guessing from context she’s either referring to the Office of Legal Counsel or the Dept. of Justice?

Maybe we should ask President Obama (speaking recently to the “President… er Prime Minister Putin” of Russia) what legal resources he has at his disposal.

cs89 on July 7, 2009 at 9:53 AM

All she meant by “department of law” was the administrations legal resources…

which are vast, and have unlimited resources.

She was not referring to a “Department of Law”

“I don’t think this will convince those who have made up their minds one way or the other,…”

That’s really the whole point isn’t it? A lot of people haven’t made up their mind yet as to whether this will prove to be a net good or was a disastrous blunder.

Many who stampeded to the second position, on both sides of the ideological divide, are desperate to validate their hasty, categorical determination. They seem to have invested an awful lot of credibility in their spontaneous, “she’s done” pronouncements — for whatever reasons.

It doesn’t look like they’re going to be prepared to let any developments in the future alter their position.

Listen, these reporters/pundits everywhere are not giving any context at all to the mad political situation in Alaska right now…last night on Greta, Greta spoke with her reporter live via streaming vid, who’s been doing real digging and reporting from the state and traveling all over the place the last few weeks talking to everybody and their momma.

What she said was very key and contextual to this whole situation–prior to being picked for her VP run, Sarah enjoyed lots of bipartisan support and worked very well with the Democratic legislature in her state..after running against Obama and being highly critical of him during the elections she pissed a whole bunch of them off–these are the same people and forces jacking up the ethics complaints against her–it’s all a political game of revenge and I’ve no doubt where these Alinskyite methods originated from…

meerkat on July 7, 2009 at 9:51 AM

I think you’re right. Which is fine. I didn’t “hate” Romney, but he wasn’t my cup of tea.

My problem (and what I assume is many here’s problem that are lashing out at Ed/AP) is that the “ELITES” of the Republican Party (the NationalReview, Weekly Standard, the RNC, basically any repub on the ‘all star panel’ with bret baier on fox) have been shoving Mitt Romney down our throats since the middle of 2007 as the ‘savior of the universe’.

The PROBLEM is, that once Mitt floundered, a million pieces were written by the GOPelites about “anti-mormon bigotry”, “southern intolerance”, “red state jealousy of mitt’s perfect family”, etc, etc, etc, instead of realizing that:

A) most GOPers dont trust ANYONE from massachusetts and/or the far northeast (unlike the beltway elites that believe if only we could all be maine republicans the world would be better,

B) having a “conversion” to be pro-life at age 50 AFTER you won elected office as pro-choice is not a good thing, it smacks of hypocrisy, on an issue that is THE “ONE THING” to many in the GOP

C) mitt inspired noone. i hated huck, as an arkansan he’s a sham (he used to use the governor’s motorcade to make late night runs to taco bell in Little rock), but still Huck is motivating and an inspiring speaker. if I had to guess what words Mitt Romney would use as a theme it would be “moral forbearance” and “fiscal caution”. quite a far cry from drill baby drill…….

LevStrauss on July 7, 2009 at 9:56 AM

Real fishing. Are you fake trolling?

littleguy on July 7, 2009 at 10:00 AM

I don’t think this will convince those who have made up their minds one way or the other

In other words, I have to stand by my knee-jerk poo-poo’ing of her resignation peaceful transfer of power to the Alaskan Lt. Governor because, well, I just have to!

SouthernGent on July 7, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Man, you guys just can’t get enough of her.

If you really think she’s finished, then move on to a different topic already.

The left is in full tilt boogy mode:

How many times do you have to hear it? It was pretty much a selfless decision. The pundits have it so wrong. A quitter? Hardly. She is the only Republican or anyone else that is standing up and will be fighting for us.
This had nothing to do with her children being constantly snarked on by dirty old men. Her children are with her for making a difference and fighting for what’s right. A great family willing to fight. Just what we need. We need to get out there and help her!

BetseyRoss on July 7, 2009 at 10:01 AM

CNN shows a relaxed Palin…

A little too relaxed, if you ask me.

Sorry, it’s just hard to take her seriously when she’s doing an interview in overalls like that.

Although for sure, she was candid and the interview was well done, despite the choice of venue.

JetBoy on July 7, 2009 at 10:02 AM

If Palin wants us to accept this at “face value,” as she says in both the CNN and ABC interviews, then she needs to stop talking about her supposed lame-duck status.

If you don’t think we ought to accept this at “face value,” maybe you could tell us all what she REALLY meant?

There is no “Department of Law” at the White House.

And? (Apparently there IS a “Department of Law” in Alaska, and presumably there is SOMETHING in the White House that serves a similar function, right?)

Now see here folks, Sarah Palin is just Harriet Miers with charm. Those dang private citizens with their ignorance of Washington ways need to just stay home and fish and leave government business to the Ivy League professionals. Their money is always welcome and they can come out to vote, but they really need to stop trying to run things.

There certainly is in Alaska, so it’s not really that big of a gaffe. It certainly is not a Bidenesque gaffe, but leave it to the MSM to take a shot at Palin. Imagine if they did the same thing to Biden and Obama? Wouldn’t that be great?

Shock the Monkey on July 7, 2009 at 10:02 AM

She’s finished with “politics as usual”

meerkat on July 7, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Whatever she’s finished with, the author of this post declared her career to be over. If he truly believes that he should put his money where his mouth is and drop the Palin topics. Plenty of other stuff to write about then a politician whose career is over, right?

Can such ugliness ever be avoided?

Gee, I dunno, ABC News. Why not give it a try?

Jim Treacher on July 7, 2009 at 10:03 AM

Ed, wanted Romney to win the nomonation. Nuff said?

meerkat on July 7, 2009 at 9:51 AM

You mean for the Republican nomination in 2012??

Romney, Huck, and any other also ran would lose to Obama.
These guys have no juice. The GOP needs to rally around Sarah
or lose – forever. There won’t be another chance. 2016 will be too late.

izoneguy on July 7, 2009 at 10:04 AM

If you think she looks hot in her fish huntin clothes just imagine what she’ll look like once fishing season is over and she puts on her Hack Politician and Media Whore huntin outfit.

I can’t wait.

Oh and another Palin bashin post another contribution to SarahPac now RNC, McSlime, send me a donation request so’s I can rip it to shreds and send it to Sarah wtih another donation.

God, this Scumbag huntin is going to be fun!

dhunter on July 7, 2009 at 10:04 AM

Ed, there’s an MSNBC interview with Andrea Mitchell too.

“that” before ?

JetBoy on July 7, 2009 at 10:02 AM

So the gay lad from New York City doesn’t like the masculine venue? j/k ; – )

thomasaur on July 7, 2009 at 10:04 AM

Palin is awesome. I do agree with Ed about the lame-duck status, because she really doesn’t need to mention that at all. She has enough reasons based on the resources she has put forward to battle these complaints and lawsuits.

And this is the tougher road for her personally, as she risks her reputation on this decision.

She is really the coolest politician I’ve ever seen.

therightscoop on July 7, 2009 at 10:04 AM

Just a reminder to our friends on the left who are foaming at the mouth over the “department of law” comment:

Bamster didn’t know the United States had a National Geospatial Intelligence Agency until an employee of said department briefed him at a burger joint – four months AFTER Bamster had taken office.

I guess visiting all 57 states and studying the Austrian language can’t prepare you for EVERYTHING.

BardMan on July 7, 2009 at 10:05 AM

LOL!! Everyone is worried that she said: “Department of Law” and yet Obama is out shredding the Constitution and trying to bypass congress…

izoneguy on July 7, 2009 at 9:59 AM

So right, and as others have said and I say again, there is an Alaska Department of Law — it was an analogy!

littleguy on July 7, 2009 at 10:05 AM

ED, CURIOUS WHY YOUR ANALYSIS LACKS THE WORDS “ETHICS COMPLAINT” ANYWHERE IN IT…

Maybe because, um, er, in her own words, that’s why she resigned???

But, yes, by all means, let’s argue about ‘lame duck’ instead of the fact that yet ANOTHER frivolous complaint was filed YESTERDAY:

battleoflepanto1571 on July 7, 2009 at 9:42 AM
