The Hot Air tribute to the passing of a musical genius
posted at 8:08 pm on July 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I’m tired of all the demands from the closed-minded, telling us we should ignore this tremendous talent taken from us far too soon. Stop the resentment, people. Unlock your hearts and give this man his due. Click on the image to watch:
Decades later, that music still grabs me by the heart. When he left us, a simpler time passed with him as well.

Ed:
If we want to be serious about the winning the battle of ideas, Conservative media needs to FOCUS. Satire, yeah, got it…whatever..this comment goes way beyond this thread. The point I am getting at is the conservative media is just as A.D.D. as the MSM. If half the conservative bloggers would engage in investigative journalism and dig their feet in on one issue and not spend their time being headline jockeys, we might get somewhere. Cap and trade and global warming should be the primary concern of the conservative media. We have the chance to stop this legislation and expose the left for the liars they are…
Quit following the MSM narrative and provide us with some real ammunition
Thanks

8-tracks and Pintos – those were the days. You were lucky. I had to listen to them on my yellow Dynamite 8.

Wrong!!! It really is another thread on Michael Jackson.
No one was resenting Jim Croce, so Jim Croce is just Ed’s obvious subterfuge to have yet another Michael Jackson thread.

doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I dunno. I’m, shall we say, “uncomfortable” with this thread.
Moving on, O’Reilly has the body language expert on, parsing Brooke Shields at M.J.’s service. B.O.R. pronounced it “strange”, and “overly emotional” (and he was stunned to see her there because he ‘didn’t expect it’, which is oh, so relevant).
Tanya the expert concluded she had “classic signs of real sadness”.
As much as there’s tons to criticize (I’m talkin’ to you Sheila and all the opportunists who turned this into a typical chance to shill for the DNC and the constituents of the Justice Brothers) there was also much to praise (I only saw a bit of it – Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, and Brooke so I can’t give a full review).
Did it deserve to be broadcast in its entirety? No, but ultimately that’s not the fault of anyone but the media outlets who made that decision. Deciding that it’s appropriate to analyze the body language of mourners?
Very tacky, B.O.R.

Awesome tune!
Like Billy Joel’s “Lullabye”
JetBoy on July 7, 2009 at 9:02 PM
Seriously, did you both have Pintos? My 8-track was stolen out of my 71 Pinto while I was at work. I know those people went on to lead just horrible lives, probably in jail.
Cindy Munford on July 7, 2009 at 9:02 PM
I like some of what you mentioned, but I wouldn’t put any of it in Croce’s league.

BacaDog on July 7, 2009 at 9:03 PM
I like Joel’s “For the Longest Time”. I goof on harmony.

Welcome to the FAILBOAT. Click the link or at least read the comments to figure out what is going on before you go off half cocked. Its that kind of attitude that gives the left excuses to go after us(not that they need it, but the pretense helps their conscious… such as it is).
Wolftech on July 7, 2009 at 9:05 PM
lol…my first car was a used 72 Dodge Dart Swinger. Thing was almost as ugly as a Pinto.
coyoterex on July 7, 2009 at 9:05 PM
Powder blue. Bought it for 300 bucks in 1974 right after I got my license. The 8 track (a big humpin Pioneer) was only attainable with my employee discount from Western Auto.

Ed,
What does the screen shot have to do with the link it points to? You could still use that picture and have it go to TiaB, or for that matter, an entire playlist of Croce songs.
I bet there are plenty of pictures you can click on the Internet that take you to this video.

That Ed was using Jim Croce to point out how stupid America has become and clown MJ in the same thread seems to have escaped you, get back in the corner….
doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 9:07 PM
Wow. Thanks for this post! I was 8 years old when he died. I can still see where I was when the news of his death came over my little transistor radio tuned to my favorite AM station. I cried when I heard the news. He is still one of my all time favorites. Died WAY too soon. This is the type of artist we need today. Not that American Idol crap.
RIP Jim.
Major Nuisance on July 7, 2009 at 9:07 PM
That song was pretty amazing, purely vocals all the way through and done to perfection. For Billy Joel’s piano playing, I really liked Travelling Prayer and The Ballad of Billy the Kid.
backwoods conservative on July 7, 2009 at 9:07 PM
As I implied above, the real idiots are those who somehow think this is actually suppose to be a Croce thread… ;p
Don’t fall for Ed’s shenanigans. Some of Allahpundit’s Loki scalawagness has apparently rubbed off on him.
It was not a trick. It was a double trick.

That was worth more than the 8-track player.
backwoods conservative on July 7, 2009 at 9:12 PM
Poor old MB4… Triple trick, It’s a thread about Jim Croce, used to trick people into thinking it’s a thread about MJ when it’s really a thread to point out how stupid America has become while pointing out that not only was MJ a clown, had his own circus, but millions of clone clowns in his circus…
doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 9:12 PM
What do you think I meant when I said he was riffing on MJ? Put your thinking cap on, even if it is a pointy one.
I’ve been here since Day One. You?

Yes, I didn’t get my license until the 80′s so I inherited the rust bucket and risked my life everytime I got behind the wheel. I can still remember using every muscle in my arms to turn corners. BTW, I bet your 8-track player is floating around ebay.

doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 9:16 PM
To clarify: He’s making light of the celebrity treatment of M.J.
Apparently I am in the minority, but it fell flat for me. Chuckles the Clown, now that’s funny.
Buy Danish on July 7, 2009 at 9:16 PM
Nice bit of trivia! Thanks for that. Here’s some more:
See my prior post for who Maury is (he grew up in Trenton, NJ).
He and Maury didn’t particularly like the music industry. So they made a deal with each other. They’d work together to promote Jim first, and if that didn’t work out, they’d promote Maury as the star. Either way, once they got going, the deal was they’d spin-off the back-up singer to promote his own career.
Unfortunately, they died before they could give Maury his shot. Maury did make a solo album (I think it was before he joined Jim Croce) but the tunes were kinda sappy, though the music itself and guitar was pretty good. I especially like the first song, “A song I heard.” If you listen to the lyrics it’s an ideal way to start an album.
Daggett on July 7, 2009 at 9:16 PM
heh…
Dear gawd…How DID you guys survive on AM music radio?
JetBoy on July 7, 2009 at 9:17 PM
Truly a loss when Croce left us, that guy had a talent that was timeless.
For some reason whenever I think of Croce dying I think of Thurman Munson dying too, must be the ‘stache.

Heh. Good opportunity for the ban hammer just for being so stupid.
BacaDog on July 7, 2009 at 9:18 PM
At the risk of ruining all my credibility (if I have any) I traded my 71 red Pinto, with a sticker of Foghorn Leghorn covering a tiny tear in the dash on a brand new 74 Pinto. But everyone needs to cut me some slack, I could have been killed by an exploding gas tank.
Cindy Munford on July 7, 2009 at 9:18 PM

These songs are music.
The two Croce songs closest to my heart are “Salon and Saloon” and “Lover’s Cross.”
I love Billy Joel’s Innocent Man album.
Lastly, I got to see Dan Fogelberg’s acoustic concert in the early 80s–magic.

Jim Croce? Ugh. Not really a bad guy, though, as far as I know (not very far, but never heard anything about inappropriate behavior around kids being associated with him).

BacaDog on July 7, 2009 at 9:22 PM
The Admiral Emeritus bought a putrid-mint-green 1978 Pinto station wagon in my sophomore year in high school. He thought it was great, because — as he explained — it was the first model year for the Pinto that didn’t have the exploding gastanks, so he got it at a great price. It looked like a rolling breath mint.
However, it did actually last for years and years without hardly any problems at all. They engineered the hell out of the Pinto in that year, but it was too late to save it.
