I’m tired of all the demands from the closed-minded, telling us we should ignore this tremendous talent taken from us far too soon. Stop the resentment, people. Unlock your hearts and give this man his due. Click on the image to watch:
Decades later, that music still grabs me by the heart. When he left us, a simpler time passed with him as well.

alohapundit on July 7, 2009 at 8:12 PM
So cool, I knew it was him before I clicked. Ah, my youth.
Cindy Munford on July 7, 2009 at 8:12 PM
Great musician. His back-up singer, Maury Muehleisen (who died in the same plane crash), grew up about a mile away from me. He was great, too.
Daggett on July 7, 2009 at 8:13 PM
For 35 years he undoubtedly was the best entertainer on the planet. The last 10 years he turned into a circus freak.
So he was bad, yet for much of his life very very good.
fogw on July 7, 2009 at 8:13 PM
FWIW, the guy playing the other guitar is Maury.

ladyingray on July 7, 2009 at 8:16 PM
A great musical talent… who destroyed himself with perversion. Celebrate the past talent, but not the thing he had become.
michaelo on July 7, 2009 at 8:16 PM
Heh. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown takes me back to my youth.
progressoverpeace on July 7, 2009 at 8:17 PM
he was a great talent and a fantastic entertainer. credit where it’s due.
now, let’s move on.
homesickamerican on July 7, 2009 at 8:17 PM
Jim Croce destroyed himself with perversion? Or could you just be an idiot???
doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 8:18 PM
Has anyone bothered to watch vid. Jim Croce is a real lost talent and a decent man.
RobCon on July 7, 2009 at 8:19 PM
There are two kinds of people in this thread, those who clicked the link and those who didn’t.
Mark1971 on July 7, 2009 at 8:19 PM
Oh for Gods sake. Watch the video people.
Killed in a plane crash. In Louisiana.
Sang Operator, Big Bad Leroy Brown, Time in a Bottle – The one and only……………..
Jim Croce
Exit question: What kind of guitar did he play?
BacaDog on July 7, 2009 at 8:19 PM
What about Billy Mays?
Upstater85 on July 7, 2009 at 8:19 PM
Yup, those who did are now pointing at those who didn’t laughing their a$$e$ off and calling them idiots… ;)
doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 8:20 PM
One helleva time period, the 60,70’s and 80’s for music,
was fantastic, and the music had meaning,a story, and at
least you could always hear the words clearly,
compared to the crap, that is called music today!!
canopfor on July 7, 2009 at 8:21 PM
Did anyone watch the video?
Man, when did Jimi Hendrix get that moustache?
alohapundit on July 7, 2009 at 8:22 PM
Evidently, this thread is a “click test” for Ed’s amusement. He deserves the fun. It’s been a rough week for the pundits.
progressoverpeace on July 7, 2009 at 8:22 PM
Nice.
“Time in a Bottle” is one of the best songs of its time.
Slublog on July 7, 2009 at 8:22 PM
Oh, come on, like Michael Jackson would have ever worn a shirt like that. Didn’t even need to click the link to know it wasn’t him.

The most poignant part was when he gave up his seat on the space shuttle to Buddy Holly.
whitetop on July 7, 2009 at 8:23 PM
I thought you were trying to trick us into watching a John Hall (or is it Daryl Oats?) video.
LASue on July 7, 2009 at 8:23 PM
Dangit, I guessed Harry Chapin.
cozmo on July 7, 2009 at 8:24 PM
Yea it’s a good one. I still favor “I’ll have to say I love you in a song” though.
Come on folks, what kind of guitar did Croce play?
BacaDog on July 7, 2009 at 8:24 PM
***palm to face***
Ya had me going, Ed.
Limerick on July 7, 2009 at 8:25 PM
Thanks for the tribute Ed.
Beautiful acoustic guitar and unmistakeable voice.
Thanks for the memories Jim.
ORrighty on July 7, 2009 at 8:26 PM
Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown (Ed Morrissey), baddest man in the whole damn town.
d1carter on July 7, 2009 at 8:26 PM
It’s not MJ. Ed’s being playful.
ProfessorMiao on July 7, 2009 at 8:27 PM
I love, how based on Marc Lamonts argument, that this man brought blacks and whites together.
He’s a true MLK Jr.
therightscoop on July 7, 2009 at 8:27 PM
You got me Ed.
*blush*
fogw on July 7, 2009 at 8:28 PM
Another fine singer.
Cindy Munford on July 7, 2009 at 8:28 PM
Still love “I Got a Name”. Great song amongst many great songs.
coyoterex on July 7, 2009 at 8:28 PM
I don’t know, but Time in a Bottle was my favorite.
ProfessorMiao on July 7, 2009 at 8:29 PM
I would have went with Time in a Bottle but hey, that song works too…
… naw, lets face it. If it would have been me, I would have RickRolled it :P
Wolftech on July 7, 2009 at 8:30 PM
I loved Jim Croce, it was so sad when he died. Great talent.
mbs on July 7, 2009 at 8:31 PM
One of the first “Behind the Music” episodes I watched was a Jim Croce tribute. I was amazed to learn he wrote a half-dozen of his greatest hits in a week.
sibobr on July 7, 2009 at 8:31 PM
Agreed, Ed.
Though I would have picked Time in a Bottle.
I turned up the volume and jammed to Leroy Brown when it came on XM the other day.
Sometimes the simplest music is the best.
RhymesWithRight on July 7, 2009 at 8:32 PM
I knew it was Jim Croce before I even clicked on it.
Think I’ll listen to his last performance in honor of a true American musical hero.
JohnGalt23 on July 7, 2009 at 8:32 PM
Awesome. took me back to my childhood (my dad had one or two of his albums on vinyl) and we heard him a lot on the radio.
I really get tired of hearing that. There was loads of crap in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, too. And there is some truly incredible music being made today, both by new, young artists, and established performers who just keep pluggin’ away.
Frozen Tex on July 7, 2009 at 8:32 PM

As a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a roller derby queen (inspired by the song and Saturday TV), now that roller derby is back, I’m too old and too out of shape. Dag-nabbit!
Laura in Maryland on July 7, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Yes I clicked the link first. LOL *bows down before Ed’s pwnzrness* Great musician and sorry to hear he died.
What I want to know is, how long did it take Ed to ferret out the front page pic that fools us so well?
inviolet on July 7, 2009 at 8:33 PM
You’re not the only one. Chapin was the first one I thought of, followed by Croce. Those two and Karen Carpenter are the deaths that still sadden me the most even after so many years.
When Croce died I was just an adolescent and had not yet gotten into the habit of reading the newspaper every day. News of his death reached me by word of mouth and for a long time I hoped it was just a rumor. If only it were so. We’ll never know what wonderful music he might have created if his life had not been cut short.
backwoods conservative on July 7, 2009 at 8:33 PM
What great memories. I liked Jim Croce, loved Dan Fogelberg and wanted to marry James Taylor. But would have left him for Gino Vanelli.

The Obama economy makes me think of “Working at the car wash blues”. Thats were many of us will be working before Barry is done with us.

But he can’t moonwalk…
Hog Wild on July 7, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Yes, but the crap to gem quotient has increased exponentially since the 70s (ignoring the quagmire that was Disco… I blame Carter for that, too). There is way more crap being produced today than ever before. Hey, maybe that is it. Someone call Al Gore.. Britney Spears and Coldplay is causing global warming with all the crap they produce.
:P
Wolftech on July 7, 2009 at 8:36 PM
You go stand in the corner until we tell you to turn around. SHOO!
Laura in Maryland on July 7, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Ok. Bit of trivia.
Croce played an Ovation Celebrity series. Round back acoustic guitar with fabulous sound.
His guitar survived the plane crash, and Croce’s wife returned it to Ovation. It still had a set list from his last gig taped to the back.
BacaDog on July 7, 2009 at 8:37 PM

Frozen Tex on July 7, 2009 at 8:32 PM
I know that’s right.
Cindy Munford on July 7, 2009 at 8:39 PM
Is this where I go to sign up for the “I don’t give a rip about Michael Jackson” club?
So far, I’ve successfully avoided clicking on a single MJ links on the various sites I frequent. I recommend y’all do the same, if for no other reason than to exercise your will.
Splashman on July 7, 2009 at 8:40 PM
Good evening, I’m Mr. Ed Morrissey. The producers of Hotair have asked me to explain the threads we have been having lately. Let me be frank – it is an attempt to boost blog site hits. There are many ways to do this: better scripts, more warmth and big-name guest stars. But, we’re desperate. So on our threads, we’re going to rely mainly on four sure-fire ratings grabbers: Sarah Palin, atheism, Joe Biden’s latest foot-in-mouth, and, best of all, a cliffhanger ending that will keep our viewers glued to the edge of their seats until tomorrow, MORE Michael Jackson!!! Thus, ensuring there will be a tomorrow. Trust me. I know what I’m doing.

Nope…Gotta be, Operator….
ladyingray on July 7, 2009 at 8:41 PM
I wanted to pick “Time in a Bottle,” but there was no video of him performing it on YouTube. That would have been my first choice — but then I wouldn’t have gotten that great screen shot for the post.
Ed Morrissey on July 7, 2009 at 8:41 PM
Impossible… I was a professional musician in the 80’s, if there had been any cr@p produced then I would have
been involvedknown about it…doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 8:41 PM
Yup, that one gets my vote… ;)
doriangrey on July 7, 2009 at 8:42 PM
Dirty Diana or I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song? You be the judge.
It’s hard to believe Jim has been dead longer than he was alive.
Pablo on July 7, 2009 at 8:42 PM
I let my mom pick all the music for my wedding but strictly forbade “We’ve Only Just Begun” to be played. The sap factor was just too high.

I didn’t. I almost never watch them as they take much too long to load and slow way down all my other open screens. I figured it was probably not Saint MJ, as it didn’t look like the back of HIS head, but Ed clearly wanted at least some of us to think it was, so who am I to dampen down thread counts.
MB4 on July 7, 2009 at 8:49 PM
and you ruined it.
F15Mech on July 7, 2009 at 8:49 PM
Croce and Chapin were probably the only mellow music I liked back then because their sheer talent speaks for itself. Normally I was searching for the precursor to metal which at the ripe old age of 55 I still love.
Cindy Munford on July 7, 2009 at 8:50 PM
Another great one. Not sure if he had any bad music.

How long did Ed take getting that screencap just right?
