Rasmussen: Obama still slipping

posted at 2:52 pm on July 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama’s “passion index” rating dropped to the lowest level of his presidency, according to the latest Rasmussen polling.  Thirty-six percent of respondents now strongly disapprove of his performance, compared to 33% who strongly approve, giving him a -3 rating.  The poll does not completely cover the period of time since the last unemployment report, meaning that he may still drop further:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 33% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-six percent (36%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –3. Those figures reflect the highest level of strong disapproval measured to date and the lowest level recorded for the overall Approval Index …

Overall, 52% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance so far. That, too, is a new low for the President. Forty-seen percent (47%) now disapprove.

Well, 52% isn’t bad for a President mired in an economic crisis that seems unending, but it’s a far cry from where Obama started.  It’s also going in the wrong direction.  As job losses mount, the passion index will expand in the negative, and his falling numbers may give moderate Democrats in red-leaning states second thoughts about supporting Obama’s big-spending plans on health care and energy.  Getting behind a popular president is easy, but when the voters turn on the executive, don’t expect people to remain loyal — especially when they have to face the voters in 2010.

Who are those voters?  Gallup says they’re increasingly conservative:

Despite the results of the 2008 presidential election, Americans, by a 2-to-1 margin, say their political views in recent years have become more conservative rather than more liberal, 39% to 18%, with 42% saying they have not changed. While independents and Democrats most often say their views haven’t changed, more members of all three major partisan groups indicate that their views have shifted to the right rather than to the left.

These findings, from a June 14-17 Gallup Poll, somewhat conform to Gallup’s annual trends on Americans’ self-defined political ideology. Thus far in 2009 (from January through May), 40% of Americans call themselves conservative, up from 37% in 2007 and 2008, and the highest level since 2004.

The high-spending, no-results Obama administration will accelerate those trends in the coming months.  Expect Obama’s efforts with Congress to get more difficult, not less, even with the addition of Al Franken to the Senate.

Update: Jim Geraghty notes a Quinnipiac poll showing Obama down to 49-44 in Ohio, a key state for re-election — and one of the big losers in cap-and-trade.

When the s**t hits the fan, the only commodities worth a damn will be guns, bullets, food, water, secure energy supply and a secure domicile with a good field of fire.

I’m looking for a spread in the country large enough to build a bunker with at least 200 yards from the property lines and no trees to obstruct my field of fire. With obama as president and 2012 approaching, all new homes should be built underground with machine gun parapets with a 360 view.

Actually he does, he is the first President to receive daily poll figures, they say he is obsessed by them.

I don’t think he’s looking for what most people think he’s looking for in those numbers.

Either that, or he’s so consistently stupid that he ALWAYS does the opposite of whatever makes the numbers go higher. Consider how the media protects him, the fact that Obama can drive his poll numbers down at all should tell you how offensive he is.

You will stand out like a sore thumb.

Better to use the Japanese or Vietnamese approach; build your place so it blends in to the vegetation and can’t be seen until an intruder is close upon it.

My lake place doesn’t even have a very defined drive on which to approach, it wouldn’t take much to camo the entrance into the treeline.

The problem is that his numbers are slipping for the wrong reasons.

He didn’t save their jobs and people are mad.

Guess what, it’s not the job of the POTUS (or any government official, for that matter) to secure a job for you.

I’ll start to feel good about the dip in his approval rating once it’s shown that it’s his government interventionist policies that people are rejecting and not just the fact that those policies haven’t worked yet. As long as people still think some other form of intervention or some other politician’s magic plan will work, we’re still screwed.

JadeNYU on July 7, 2009 at 3:36 PM

It won’t be long before W has a better approval rating than Mr. 57 states.

Obama and his socialist policies will vindicate Bush much faster than the history books.

guntotinglibertarian on July 7, 2009 at 3:39 PM

Exactly!

I was talking to my instructor the other day about politics. He’s not extremely liberal, but he did grow up in Oregon, live most of his adult life in Los Angeles and tends to be significantly more liberal than I am.

He asked me what I thought about Obama which is a fairly open ended and potentially dangerous question. I decided to play it a bit safe and said, “I think he’s in a difficult situation. He took office right around the time the economy tanked and everyone is looking to him to magically fix it. The thing is, I don’t think any one person can magically fix it, no matter how smart they are. The economy has millions of moving parts and most of the so-called fixes just end up making things worse. I think it would be ideal if Obama would get government out of the way, let this thing correct itself (even if it means that some people that overextended themselves lose their homes and have to go back to renting) and stick to the basics of governing. Unfortunately, people like to see their politicians ‘doing something!!!!!” so it’s very rare that a politician will agree to just get out of the way.”

By the end of our conversation, the guy was telling me that if he heard a rep running for office saying what I was saying (and believed they’d follow through), he’d vote for them.

I think people at almost all steps of the political spectrum will respond well to a message of responsibility and government not mucking things up if it’s advocated correctly.

Unfortunately, there are very few Reps and even fewer Dems out there currently that have any credibility on these issues at all.

JadeNYU on July 7, 2009 at 3:54 PM

When Bush was in office, each new poll showing lower favorability than the last was big news on all the news shows and papers. Why do I get the feeling we won’t hear anything from the usual suspects about Obama’s popularity dropping like a stone.

SouthernGent on July 7, 2009 at 4:07 PM

The poll slippage is still insignificant enough to be accounted for entirely due to waning enthusiasm from the useless bandwagoners that got up off the couch to vote for him in the first place.

The rabid ones who he has turned loose after 8 years of Bush repression have still not lost their thirst for American blood, their hatred for any conservative spokesperson, or their desire to see all non-elites living out a Madmax movie.

Over at MSNBC they are crowing deliriously about their guy’s ability to shove more down our collective throats than any 10 Presidents in history. They believe that they are still on track to achieve their entire agenda–and then make up a new one.

Since the MSM continues to “overlook” any voices of opposition–due to viewer apathy, I’m sure, but that hasn’t kept them from reporting repeating everything the President says–we have no indication that their success will stop anytime soon.

No doubt. I am originally from Ohio as well. My grandfather was a coal miner in West Virginia. That whole area – from PA to IN will suffer immensely, on top of the struggles they already have.

Myself and a friend of mine are working feverishly on this very goal. I will report back when we launch the initial site. For now, I have been crunching #’s and writing articles for the launch. Marcy is defeatable – if you look at the statistics precinct by precinct, a pattern quickly emerges. The statistical explanation is too long for this post. There are, however, two easily identifiable problems – one is lack of a viable challenger (ever), and the other relates to an incorrect perception the local populace (even conservatives are voting for her) has of her. We intend to set the record straight on the latter while trying to find someone to fill the former.

I am from Toledo, and I think the tide is turning in the city as well. For years we have had a Democratic machine that has destroyed the city. We have put up with one of the most incompetent buffoon mayors in the history of the world (Carty Finkbeiner) – who was actually recalled but refuses to step down. The mayoral election is this year and there is no indication that he is running. Additionally, the democrats who are running are low in the polls when compared to the independant and republican currently. If Toledo turns, the District can be turned.

I will let fellow Northern Ohioans know when everything is ready!

Does Allahpundit still believe that Obama will have no trouble being re-elected? Obama’s margin over McCain –again, with emphasis — McCain!– was just 52% – 47%. Mind you, that was due largely to Palin being on the ticket. Even McCain admits that he would have been trounced worse w/o Palin’s help.

Now that the “mainstream” media, the rinos, and other so-called “conservative” pundits (Kathleen Parker, Peggy Noonan, et al.) have it their way and Palin has resigned as Gov. of Alaska, Obama may still have a chance. If the economy still gets worse and unemployment still continues to skyrocket (and how could it not with Obama’s policies?), we may get to a point when even Lindsay Graham has a chance to become president (God, PLEASE prevent that from happening).

Obama has reacted petulantly, arrogantly and in an authoritarian manner whenever Republicans have criticized him or tried to stop his plans.

It will be interesting to see how he will react when the majority of Americans (and perhaps even the press?) begin criticizing him. For some reason I keep getting a picture of Khrushchev yelling “We will bury you!”

Any bets on how long it will be until Obama has his “pounding the shoe on the table” moment?

Sorry Dave. Ain’t gonna happen for reasons too numerous to list. Obama’s falling numbers are actually artificially high. Remember, he has a built-in +15% from blacks. His anti-business agenda will cost jobs via taxation and as things get worse, people will pin the blame on massive spending, borrowing, taxing, and printing money. OMG, wait till the inflation kicks in and money is worth crap. 2010 will be a blood bath at the polls.

marklmail on July 7, 2009 at 6:03 PM

Still haven’t decided if my next major purchase will be a new gun or gold. Can’t tell exactly where this country is headed but it ain’t good.

I’ve already started to stockpile both! I have always been an activist Libertarian, but am speaking out louder than ever before. It frightens me that over 50% of those polled STILL approve of this guy. Amazing.

lovedinthekeys on July 7, 2009 at 6:15 PM

as things keep slipping, and Tapper and others start to get testier and combative, we’ll start to get a peak of a different side of Obama, and I think it will be an ugly side. He doesn’t handle criticism well and he gets testy when cornered. Now with the bloom of the rose, and nobody buying into the whole hopey changy BS anymore, we’ll see how well Mr Cool handles it. I think he picked a bad year to give up smoking.

If this were a sane world, I would agree.

I also don’t think that inflation thing is going to kick in in time to affect much until Obama has survived re-election in 2012, due mainly to the destruction of wealth currently under way:

I hope I am wrong.

But . . . but . . . I thought Obama was a Uniter not a divider.

WannabeAnglican on July 7, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Just who exactly are these people that strongly approve of his performance
Blacks – 13%
Hispanics – 15%
Single moms
Hard core lefties
Public employees
Assorted perverts, degenerates and useless eaters

guntotinglibertarian on July 7, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Ok, I know you did not intend to offend single Moms and I wont take it personally but not all single Moms are on welfare and looking for the next handout. Some of us work hard to earn a paycheck to provide our children a safe, well educated, loving life and try to teach them that even though the dad walked out on them they are still important and they are loved by many. Personally, I refuse to accept public assistance because I dont want YOU paying for it!
As a side note, I did not vote for obama.

Call me shallow, but this news makes me happier than anything else I’ve heard all day.

Apropos of nothing, I have a cheese blintz that, when held one way looks like Michael Jackson, and when held the other way looks like Michelle Obama (or Chewbacca, whichever you prefer). I’m going to be offering it for sale on Ebay soon, but thought I might offer it to the HA faithful first.

mr.blacksheep on July 7, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Due to underwhelming response, I ate the blintz, Chewie notwithstanding.

mr.blacksheep on July 7, 2009 at 7:07 PM

Just like the FDR administration did before his second term win, most the stimulus money will be spent very strategically within the swing states. Blood Red or Deep Blue states need not apply.

Caper29 on July 7, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Thats what I think too. And the people will either be loyally gullible or will desperately “hope” “change” is around the corner by then.

Itchee Dryback on July 7, 2009 at 7:37 PM

a Quinnipiac poll showing Obama down to 49-44 in Ohio

The hell with Ohio. They were told repeatedly, even by Obama himself, what would happen to Ohio with Obama in the White House. They voted for Obama anyway.

I agree that with the One only getting 52% against McCain that he can be beaten and handily by the right candidate. If you look at that 52% probably 25-30% of those voted for what they thought Obama was and after 8 years of Bush just looking for a change. I guarantee many of those are now getting a bad case of buyer’s remorse. Obama will still have his uber-faithful followers and plenty of sycophants in the media but the tide is slowly turning back our direction. I don’t know how it couldn’t with the Obama/PelosiReid triumvirate mucking the country and economy up. That’s why they have been in such a big hurry to pass all these bills before people wake up and realize their future has been stolen and they have been enslaved to their socialist masters.

CrockObama:

Ummm……err……uhhhhh….hope and change…..umm…annnnnnnd…..uhhhhh…..annnnnnd, uhhhh change and hope.

Let’s recap: 2 trillion debt since January 2009 (Obanomics), 9.5% unemployment and rising, trillions lost in personal wealth, nonstimulus, housing crunch still going strong, loss of respect in the world (CrockObama’s main goal), Iran bomb, Korean bomb, Honduras support of a dictator (aka meddling in foreign affairs), lack of Iranian freedom support (musn’t meddle in foreign affairs), Gitmo detainees in Europe (Germany takes ONE), Miranda rights to terrorists which CrockObama denied he would EVER do….Folks, this happened on the democrat congresses watch and under CrockObama.

Usually I would not affix the state of the economy one way or another on the executive branch…the President’s power is severely limited in economics especially when it comes to positive growth. That is, the President has no magic economic wand to wave-can’t simply decree that the economy approves.

But, the converse is what we’re seeing now…the negative. That is easily being accomplished through the massive spending and interference of business. If he chose to fight any of these spending monsters he would find many in Congress willing to side with him and prevent veto overrides. Generally presidents stop doing things or veto spending bills once they see it’s hurting the economy.

Clearly, either the President is actually the originator of much of this stuff and/or is complicit with the like-minded Marxists running Congress. That is, they’re all on the same sheet of music.

Dr. ZhivBlago on July 8, 2009 at 4:50 AM

Its absolutely insane…his numbers are STILL high and hes totally fking destroyed the economy and our country in 6 months. Its mind numbing how stupid the American people are. Either Rasmussen and Gallup are polling far leftists and negros only…or America really is as totally ignorant as I think it is. ANY other President who has totally wrecked the economy (and done all the other radical, insane shit hes done) would have a 20% or lower approval rating. It sure pays to be black eh? Lets be honest here people…this is the ONLY reason why his numbers are still this damn high. I dont know what its going to take to get Americans to wake the hell up…maybe 25% unemployement? I doubt even that with this guy…

Jackson1227 on July 8, 2009 at 5:51 AM

Wednesday – President “Milk It” has now reached an even lower new low. At this rate, by the end of the summer, he will be -100, with 100% strong disapproval:

Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –5.

The number who strongly disapprove inched up another point to the highest level measured to date and the overall Approval Index is at the lowest level yet for Obama

ChrisB on July 8, 2009 at 9:44 AM

These voters aren’t “turning” conservative. They were conservative all along and just got caught up in the Hopey Changey hype. I know all kinds of people – my brother being the most prominent in my mind – who voted for him just because they felt it was the “cool” or “right” thing to do, politics be damned, and now they’re seeing the folly of putting him in office and are coming around to see all of the things I was trying to tell them about before the election. He’s an ultra liberal with a radical agenda.

I’m not at all comparing Obama personally to Hitler when I say this, but from a strictly electoral standpoint, it’s very clear to me now just how guys like him and Chavez and whoever else get into power in the first place. Voters just lose their minds and literally get caught up in all of the excitement. They don’t think for themselves.

It was scary to witness in November (although having John McCain as a mushy alternative didn’t help a bit) and it’s scary to see now that he and Pelosi are in control.

Onterma Approval sinks to a personal low 56%. Disapproval at a personal high of 36%

A lot can happen between 07/09 and 01/13. We can’t start counting chickens yet. If the welfare underclass continues to swell at breakneck speeds, the numbers could kill any hopes for a responsible government.
