Rasmussen: 40% of likely GOP voters say Palin hurt her chances

posted at 11:07 am on July 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Rasmussen became the first major pollster to publish a national survey on the impact of Sarah Palin’s resignation on her standing with Republican voters.  The news is not encouraging.   A plurality of likely GOP voters in 2012 (40%) say that Palin hurt her standing as a candidate.  On the positive side, 52% say it either helped or had no impact, and GOP voters still have great affection for Palin:

Forty percent (40%) of Republican voters nationwide say Sarah Palin’s decision to resign as governor of Alaska hurts her chances of winning the party’s presidential nomination in 2012.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of GOP voters finds that (24%) believe Palin’s resignation helps her chances of winning the Republican nomination, while 28% say it will have no impact on the race.

But that doesn’t mean Palin isn’t near the very top of the list when Republicans are asked what they think of her and whom they’d vote for in 2012 – as new data set for release at noon EDT today will show.

The crosstabs show this basic breakdown across almost all demographics.  Younger voters under 29 years of age gave a plurality to her resignation improving her chances, while the next age demographic — thirtysomethings — were the least forgiving of the age categories, with 48% saying it hurt.  Black GOP voters disapproved by a solid majority, 58%, to just 10% saying it boosted Palin.  Moderate Republicans also had a majority disapproving, but interestingly, the plurality among professed conservative GOP voters also said it hurt (38%, to 24% helps).

For social categories, the polling was even more interesting.  Women were slightly less forgiving than men and solidly less likely to think the resignation helped.  GOP voters with children at home were also less likely to support Palin’s position: 41%-24% hurts to helps, versus 39%-25% for voters with no children.  The numbers between married and unmarried voters are almost identical.  Religious affiliations showed an interesting split: A slight plurality of evangelicals believe it helps (33%-29%), while Protestants (41%-24%), Catholics (46%-20%), and “other” (48%-13%) have much stronger disapproving pluralities.  However, only among those “not sure” of their religious attendance did Palin win a plurality approval (29%-10%).

From the numbers, it appears that Palin only boosted her standing among evangelicals and young voters with this move.  To be fair, Palin didn’t do this to improve her standing, but to resolve other issues.  However, the impact of the decision has been negative in the demographics within the GOP where she needed to improve, and probably did more damage outside the GOP, which Rasmussen has yet to measure.  That will be a problem for any future runs at national office, but not an issue at all for her standing as an activist, if she chooses to remain in that role in the near- to mid-term.

On the plus side, though, Palin retains high favorability ratings within the party, 76%-21%.  Only Mike Huckabee has higher numbers (78%), although MItt Romney also does well (73%), showing both positioned for another charge at the GOP nomination in 2012.  Newt Gingrich hits 65%.  Neither Haley Barbour nor Tim Pawlenty break the 50% barrier, with 28% of people unsure about both.  Even if they see the resignation as politically damaging, Sarah Palin remains one of the favorites in the party.

Yeah… My daughter falls into that 40%… Mostly because she believes that the Dems and the press will effectively use this as an hammer to label Palin (insert bad label here) when next she runs. My attempts to get her to believe that the press may not always be as in control of elections as they were this time around were not successful… but, she did admit that if Sarah runs, it’s a done deal for her vote.
-
Point being, be careful how you read this stuff. And I’ll state now, I’m impressed by Sarah’s ability to spot the trap she was placed in, and find an acceptable exit strategy… No harm, and perhaps a little help. And after 3 more years of the Commie in Chief, she may just clean his clock.

Tell your sister and this is objective and blunt and not normally a conservative response but Sarah Palin did not perform as well as she could have during the fall 2008 campaign for one simple reason: she was not allowed to go through a training camp by being chosen so late in the process and that included preparing her for the scrutiny of the press.

Once Sarah travels consistenly throughout the lower 48 and take 1-2 years to go through ‘training camp’, get her sea legs, develops a rhythm, does countless number of interviews, promotes her book, and raises boatloads of money I firmly you believe you will see a bird in full flight, a fully LEGITIMIZED contender for the Presidency in 2012. And you can boil it down to two reasons: the 2008 campaign where she did gain experience of how she needed to perform but secondly and more important she no longer has a job to go to because of the resignation.

Whatever appears to be her weakness now I predict will end up her greatest strength.

technopeasant on July 7, 2009 at 5:28 PM

If she helps the GOP regain seats, she will be unstoppable.

If she helps regain seats, it will simply be by raising funds and energizing the base on a district-by-district basis.

That does nothing to erase her hard negatives among anti-religious, “pro-choice” independent idiots, who decide general elections.

You must have missed the results of today’s Rasmussen poll among likely GOP voters. Contrary to your perception Sarah Palin leads among Huckabee and Romney of those who seldom attend church and has the higest favorables as well in this voter segment.

On another poll by USA/GALLUP today of independents surveyed 44% would vote for her and 51% against. These numbers are not terrible; and remember she just resigned, which caused a shock to resonate among the voters.

By the way in the Rasmussen poll Palin is favored by 76% of Republicans and in the USA/Gallup poll 71%.

technopeasant on July 7, 2009 at 5:37 PM

The people in the middle are not zealots, nor are they necessarily anti-religious or pro-choice.

They are only interested in what’s in it for them. They are the MUSHY MIDDLE.

They are the turds on the Highway of Politics, and every effort is made to “scoop up” the votes of these ignorant swine.

They voted for Obama because they were sick of Bush and the Republicans. These same feeble-minded Fuhrer-followers voted for Bush in 2004. They are scum. They are running dogs. They should all be sent to Labor Camp to atone for being “moderates”.

They believe in Nothing except what Gummint will do for Them.

The object of each party’s nominee in the next cycle, be it Barack Obama or Sarah Palin, will be to make the effort to cater to these self-satisfied globs of intellectual baby-sh*t a noble and profoundly uplifting thing.

Where do I go to vomit.

Uh, so? Self-identified Republicans are less than 30% of the population these days.

Independents rule. And they don’t like Palin.

Look, my wife and I ponied up $4,800 for Palin (certainly not for McCain). But I don’t think she can win a general election – she’s too divisive and has made too many errors.

That 44/51 split among Independents will skyrocket in a general election, once the MSM and Soros money are fully deployed and she makes a stumble or two- which, unfortunately, she seems to be inclined to do.

Yes, they are turds, but their vote counts for more than yours or mine.

And Palin scares them. Their only religion is “tolerance” and for some insane reason, her choice to carry Trig to term looks like intolerance to them.

They don’t like the wolf-hunting thing, either.

LOL

Stormy wants to get with Sarah (get your mind outta the gutter..okay, mine went there too)

“As a woman who is often criticized and dismissed by the media I obviously can relate to Governor Palin on many levels,” Daniels said in a statement. “Given this I am very interested to hear what she has to say about the challenges women like ourselves who are not afraid to display our sexuality face when it comes to being taken seriously as leaders.”

Also she hopes for a sit-down with Palin in August. “I am planning to hold to my timetable of making an official announcement at the end of the summer,” she said. “So it is my hope that Governor Palin and I can have a chance to sit down sometime in August.”

She adds: “People tend to try and trivialize values issues as somehow not as important as other issues,” Daniels said. “But if our values are not backed by the responsibility to make the tough choices and to understand the consequences of our actions then we are doomed to failure as a society.”

It’s “only through the exercise of personal responsibility can we prevent government from impinging on our rights and intruding in our lives,” Daniels said. “I am looking forward to taking the opportunity to discuss with Governor Palin–as one strong woman to another– how we can best restore responsibility to our families and to our nation.”

Would Sarah risk her family values cred enough to bring Stormy in to the revolution?

I don’t know if Palin will ever run for any office again. But I’ll make a bet with you: in December 2010 her favorability rating will be higher than Obama’s.

You’re putting too much importance on these “independent” voters, and you’re a little too rigorous in how you characterize them. I’m an “independent voter”, not registered with any party. But even if every independent voter is just as you descrbie them, then let’s visualize in advance what sort of success a, say, Romney/Pawlenty ticket will have.

Here’s the thing: There are lots of pundits and talking heads who don’t liker for whatever reason, but lots of ordinary people like her. Conservatives need a voice that can rally the troops on a grass roots level. Let her be what she is. Let her draw big crowds, make great speeches, raise lots of money.

Look at how many comments are on this post. whatever anyone may think of her qualifications as president are, no one can deny she’s ratings gold. I’m hoping she can be the voice that helps us win big next year. Give her a chance to prove her mettle.

So, in the meanwhile, let’s just let it unfold and see what becomes of her.

Palin’s office details complaint costs

The spreadsheet compiled by the governor’s office totals more than $1.9 million reportedly spent by various state agencies to handle the complaints as well as public records requests…

According to the cost breakdown, expenditures by the state Department of Law added up to more than $850,000.

The governor’s office says its expenditures totaled more than $425,000 in nearly 6,000 hours of staff hours.

Palin’s staff released the numbers to back up her contention the onslaught of “frivolous” ethics complaints have cost the state millions of dollars and thousands staff hours.

I was curious about the manner in which she was harrassed by the Democrats up there, so I googled this list. I believe I’ve heard that she’s been cleared of all of the charges/complaints. Link at the bottom.

It seems to me that once again, the media does the public a disservice by not imparting contextual information about her reasons for quitting. This is why we have blogs. Maybe I’ve missed something, but I haven’t seen anything posted on Hot Air expanding the back story of how severely she is hampered in the performance of her job as Governor while dealing with the club crap sandwich below.

Wouldn’t that be fair and balanced? Good journalism or something? Hey, if Ed is good enough for Rush, maybe Sarah would provide an interview.

Meanwhile I guess we have to do our own research…

1. July 28, 2008: Alaska lawmakers launched an investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power when she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan over his refusal to let go a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce with Palin’s sister. Stephen Branchflower, a special counsel leading the investigation, concluded Oct. 10 that Palin violated a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain. The firing itself was deemed lawful since Monegan was an at-will employee.

2. Aug. 6, 2008: Complaint filed by outspoken Palin critic Andree McLeod of Anchorage contended Palin and some staff members used their influence to get a Palin supporter a job in state government. Complaint alleged Palin staffers helped Tom Lamal, who once co-hosted a Palin fundraiser, to get a job as a surveyor. Dismissed by state personnel board, although the board’s investigator recommended ethics training for one staffer who made questionable comments in e-mails.

3. Aug. 20, 2008: Complaint accused Palin of breaking election law by taking a public position on a mining ballot initiative days before the vote. Filed by Brian Kraft, founder of the Bristol Bay Alliance, a group that opposed the Pebble Mine prospect. Rejected May 8 by the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

Aug. 29, 2008: Palin named as John McCain’s running mate.

4. Sept. 2, 2008: Palin filed a “self disclosure” with the state personnel board over the Troopergate affair, saying a state legislative probe had become too political. On Nov. 3 — the day before the election — Timothy Petumenos, a lawyer hired by the board, said that Palin violated no ethics laws when she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.

5. Sept. 3, 2008: Complaint by the Public Safety Employees Association alleged Palin or her staff had unauthorized access to and improperly disclosed information from personnel records of Trooper Mike Wooten, Palin’s ex-brother-in-law. Complaint was later amended to include an allegation of harassment. The PSEA’s allegations were investigated alongside Palin’s filing and also dismissed.

6. Oct. 13, 2008: Monegan asked the board for a hearing to clear his name. Petumenos, in his Nov. 3 Troopergate report to the panel, said there was no legal basis or jurisdiction for such a hearing.

7. Oct. 23, 2008: Complaint with the Federal Election Commission by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics alleged the $150,000-plus designer wardrobe the Republican Party bought to outfit Palin in her vice presidential quest violated Federal Election Campaign Act. The Washington watchdog group argued that candidates aren’t supposed to use donor money for personal expenses. The FEC ruled May 19 that party money is not covered by the ban.

8. Oct. 24, 2008: Complaint contended Palin abused her power by charging the state when her children traveled with her. The personnel board found no wrongdoing, but in a Feb. 23 settlement Palin agreed to reimburse the state about $10,000 for costs associated with 10 trips found to be of questionable state interest among 72 travel authorizations studied. The money is due to the state on Tuesday.

9. Nov. 14, 2008: Accused Palin of partisan “post-election damage control” for talking to reporters about the campaign in her state office. Filed by Zane Henning, a North Slope worker from Wasilla, Palin’s hometown. Dismissed by state personnel board March 23.

10. Dec. 2, 2008: Alleged Palin violated ethics law by campaigning for Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia. Filed by Anthony Martin of Talkeetna. Dismissed by state personnel board March 23.

11. Dec. 18, 2008: Complaint contended Palin misused funds of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, a quasi-government entity, to promote her political ambitions with advertisements featuring her, violating ethics law. The ads promoting Alaska seafood ran in the National Fisherman last year through November. Dismissed Jan. 12 after a personnel board investigation determined Palin’s only involvement was to give permission to use her image long before she was named McCain’s running mate.

12. Jan. 12: Complaint alleging interference in a job hiring was filed under the name of Edna Birch, a busybody character on the British soap opera Emmerdale. Palin’s attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said no one by that name could be found living in Alaska and the filer refused to use a real name, so the complaint was dismissed Feb. 20.

13. and 14. Jan. 26: Two complaints filed by McLeod alleged two of Palin’s top aides misused their official positions for Palin’s personal and political gain. The complaints said then-press secretary Bill McAllister and Kris Perry — director of the governor’s Anchorage office — worked on state time to benefit Palin’s interests during and after her vice presidential quest. Pending.

15. March 18: Contended Palin improperly used state staff, property, time and equipment for partisan political purposes. One of the grievances cited was Palin’s posting of her veep candidacy on the official state governor’s Web site — http://gov.state.ak.us/archive.php?id=1439&type=1 Complaint filed by McLeod. Dismissed May 27 as lacking merit by personnel board May 27.

16. March 24: Contended conflict of interest by Palin because she wore Arctic Cat logo gear during the Tesoro Iron Dog snowmobile race. Palin’s husband, Todd, is sponsored by Arctic Cat in the race. Filed by Linda Kellen Biegel, a Democratic blogger. Dismissed June 2.

17. April 22: Alleged that work with Palin’s political action committee violated two provisions of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act by misusing her official position and accepting outside employment. Filed by Anchorage resident Sondra Tompkins. Dismissed as lacking merit by state personnel board May 8.

18. April 27: Contends Palin is misusing the governor’s office for personal gain by securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust. The fund was recently established by supporters to help Palin pay off more than $500,000 in legal debts stemming from other ethics complaints, including troopergate. Complaint filed by Eagle River resident, Kim Chatman. Pending.

I just saw PAlin being interviewed on Greta’s show and lemme tell ya…she looks like she’s on fire.

If I was a liberal, no sh*t I’d be scared.
If they have any brains at all they should be scared.
When I heard her speech on the 3rd, I thought she sounded like a caged tiger being let out of her cage.
The clip they showed tonight just re-enforces that view.

Watch out democrats.
It’s kind of funny that every time I hear about her I almost cringe.
But every time I actually listen to her and watch her, I’m so impressed.
If the democrats are happy she’s “gone” , they truly are certifiable.
Only a crazy or stupid person would be happy someone like her is free to say and do what she wants.
Plus that poll showing a majority either view it favorably or it doesn’t change their view of her (nice way to spin the poll, Ed) is evidence that she’s survived the inital shock.

B Man on July 8, 2009 at 3:59 AM

But how many of that 40% would still vote for her?

I would in a heartbeat, but even I wonder if it did hurt her chances.

Unfortunately, conservative candidates have to deal with the independents, the moderates, the RINOs and the GOP elitists.

Even though I’m a Republican, it would be cool if she did get elected to the White House…and then declare herself an independent.

Things in this country will be so different in 3 years.
That’s the thing.

I mean, I’m not a “Palinista” or whatever it’s called, because I’m kind of tired of all the coverage.
When I see news about her, I prepare myself for something really BAD.

But there’s no doubt that theres a fire under that woman’s a**.
If she’s able to tap into the anger that’s out there, who knows where she’ll stop.

I’ve seen a few things in the last few years in politics that have made me shake my head.
If Palin is able to get past this and capture the country’s anger and discontent, she’ll have something.

I think everybody will be up for grabs in 1-3 years.
Independents are falling away from Obama at a furious rate.
They certainly aren’t in love with Palin, but they probably aren’t closed to her either.

If Palin is as good as her most ardent supporters claim she is, she can make something happen –if she wants to.

Gov. Sarah Palin epitomizes all we love about our country.

When people attack her, her followers rise up to her defense because she represents the country. Attacking her is attacking our country and us.

In a sense, we have already hijacked her.

This is gonna be an incredibly interesting, exciting time.

Sapwolf on July 8, 2009 at 5:40 AM

The key is independents. That will be repeated time and again.
If she can win them over, she will win what she runs for.

Obama had a unnatural devotion among the left (trust me I’ve seen the googly eyes, ugh) and he won over independents simply because he seemed “cool” and was a “change”.

The thing is, I’m naturally sceptical of her and anyone I don’t really know.
But listening to her today, yeah I can see the rawness to her but to me that’s a charming point about her.
The real thing that strikes me is how HUMAN she seems.

Obama is going to try to keep this country needing his constant “gov’t will save us all!” intervention as long as he’s in power.
He’s a dictator-wannabe imo. He’s obviously a socialist-communist.
The country didn’t want that in ’08.
Palin says that one major problem is voter apathy.
That’s half-true. People are apathetic; and they have been BUT they weren’t really apathetic in ’08.
LOTS of people really cared about what was going on.
The problem was about 25-30% of the voters were TERRIBLY fooled.

And they WILL wake up and realize that. Then they’ll be very MAD. That’s unavoidable.
If she can tap into that RAGE, she’ll be a force.
That’s why democrats should be so worried.

You look at her speak and it’s there. She really has “IT”.
All this country -and she- needs is for more Obama laws giving more power to the corrupt gov’t.
The first stimulus hasn’t worked. We all know it.
Obama’s numbers are already falling.

This country elected someone president in ’08 who had NO executive experience at all. Who knew some pieces of sh*t for most of his life, and they didn’t care because they wanted a change so much.

They’ll want change again.
If she’s good, she can make it happen.

Yep Sapwolf. We are not going to let the Leftards slap her around any more.

But keep in mind that we must be sensitive to the conservatives who want to criticize her as well. They have feelings too and they don’t want to be left out. They need to feel and express themselves freely and if we resist, then they, by their very sensitive nature, will likely be deeply offended. You see they aren’t as tough as Sarah and we need to keep that in mind so that we don’t inadvertently tred on their feelings while Sarah is being slaughter, day after day, by the Left who control the three branches of government and the media.

And keep in mind that the conservatives who want to criticize her, while not giving a rip if she goes bankrupt, really do want to be heard, even thougn Palin is being eviscerated as we speak.

You see typing on a keyboard is so tiresome and we should be cognizant of the fact that they might get cranky without their noontime nappy. So don’t say anything to irritate them while Palin is having her guts spilled out onto the Alaskan soil by CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, HuffPo, KOS, Sullivan, Letterman, CBS, Couric, Oberman, NYT et al.

And try not to get too upset by them standing with their dicks in their hand while it all unfolds, cause we know they care deeply that Sarah not experience too much undo pain as she is getting reamed by one lawsuit after another and having to use her own money and stuff.

Well I am going to sign off now so that some conservatives can have more playtime criticizing the one person in human history who, apparently, hasn’t been criticized enough.

If that doesn’t scare the crap out of you then you’re in the 60%.

She doesn’t understand the role of the Justice Department (or the Department of Law) in that she assumes that they can make allegations of unethical conduct just disappear. Clinton would have loved that, eh?

popularpeoplesfront on July 8, 2009 at 8:36 AM

I think everyone needs to stop talking about ‘the party’. Most would agree that she is finished in the GOP (however, it’s not because she resigned). The libs and ‘conservatives’ (McCain rinos) are going to crap a brick when she comes back in August as an independent unconstrained by the GOP. She’s more popular right now than anyone else out there. She’s ripe to raise funds for the 2010 and 2012 Congressional independent candidates and rally the leaderless segment (including teapartiers) disillusioned with both parties. Notice any SarahPac adverts recently? Talk about your advancing in another direction.

What some less insightful folks can’t comprehend is that the DoJ would never initiate an investigation into charges that the President wore a team jacket in public as a possible violation of federal law. President Clinton engaged in perjury, which most would agree is more serious than wearing a jacket in public — personally, I would have loved it had that been his only faux pas.

Clearly, Governor Palin understands much more about this topic than most of her critics.

littleguy on July 8, 2009 at 9:12 AM

I didn’t think she was making a good move at first, now I do.

Ditto here. I am not surprised to see that the poll already shows a good perentage who think it didn’t hurt her.

I believe that people see the smear job going on. They got it before the punditry group did.

AnninCA on July 8, 2009 at 9:16 AM

And, apparently, my thinking is not way off at all. Here’s the latest poll from Gallup.

AnninCA on July 8, 2009 at 9:26 AM

The more I think about it, the more I really do think it’s a good move.

I was completely stunned by it. So stunned I didn’t know WHAT to think. Stupified.

I’m surrounded by liberals and they are all happy.
I’ve been not saying a word, kind of out of embarrassment but also because it could be a really good move, IF she plays it right.

The way I see it, is she’s giving herself up for the good of the state. That’s how I see it right now.
And that’s a really brave thing to do.
Her attitude on that interview was kind of like “if it doesn’t work out, to hell with ‘em all!” I LOVE that attitude. “I’m doin what I want and if you don’t like it, F you!”
Such guts.

I’m not sure but, it could be a BIG mistake for liberals to be happy about this.
I really don’t understand how ANY woman can support the democrat party when they trashed Hillary and are trying to crucify Palin. Is ideology more important then honor and what’s decent to democratic women?

Your comments are all very insightful. In politics it never pays to be short sighted.

No one can tell for sure how things will be in one year, no less 4 years. (or 8 years)

In politics, a year is like an eternity. And anything can happen, good and bad. In the past 10 years I’ve seen things I would never have imagined. Who can predict the future.

I don’t rule anyone out. I like Sarah and I like Jindal. A few others. I think Sarah and Jindal want to work behind the scenes for conservatives and bide their time until Obama is done in 8 years.

But if Obama tanks early (even with media support/propaganda) because of Independents, then Sarah and Jindal might change their minds.

Elisa on July 8, 2009 at 9:56 AM

Folks, you should also check out the Gallup site directly. There is some addtional information that is very interesting, such as:

1. 72% GOP likely/somewhat likely to vote for her
2. 44% Ind likely/somewhat likely to vote for her
3. 70% her resignation had no effect on opinion (all voters)
4. 53% media coverage unfairly negative (all voters)

littleguy on July 8, 2009 at 9:57 AM

heh heh . Maybe she will come back as an independent. Maybe thats what it takes. I’m gonna be voting where I think we need to go and if its for her then fine, but if its for another Bomma, pfft forget it.

johnnyU on July 8, 2009 at 10:00 AM

I think it’s because democrats feel the need to be sheep and go with what the party dictates they with.

I thought after the nomination was robbed from Hillary (Dean: “Whoever wins the nom. WILL be the next POTUS!”)
she should have become an independent.
Tell the Dems to go F themselves. But she caved.

It’s just simply going where the party want them to go.
I used to think that the dems had a problem only with conservative women. But Hillary showed how sexist they really are. Ideology didn’t matter.
I just wish democrat women would wake up to that.

I’m SO sick of both parties, if Palin told both the GOP and the dems to go to hell, even if she got her a** kicked b/c of it, I’d still admire the HELL out of her.

B Man on July 8, 2009 at 10:02 AM

I saw that littleguy. The pundit class has made fools of themselves again.

Commonsense people knew what was going on. They saw it. And Amerians don’t like scapegoating. Plus, frankly, they really saw it with Hillary, too. The reason more ado wasn’t made about that is because she, truly, has been around a long time and pretty used to it.

People don’t like dirty politics, either, and the tactics being used were obvious.

AnninCA on July 8, 2009 at 10:03 AM

You probably read it already here, but I found this to be the best analysis of Palin’s move.
Read the full American Spectator commentary linked, not just the excerpts.

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/07/06/5545/\

This was my comment:

Excerpt:
Her gubernatorial office made her a fixed target, with enemies filing frivolous ethics complaints that made Palin’s every move a potential legal action that burdened Alaska taxpayers.

This at least partly explains her enemies’ rage over her unexpected decision to resign on short notice. She thereby eludes the trap they had laid for her. She returns to the status of private citizen, where malevolent rumormongers can’t cloak their slander in bogus expressions of concern about “ethics.”

From the full American Spectator column by Robert Stacy McCain (The Other McCain)

The entire column, plus his other comments here are the best analysis I’ve seen on this so far.

Especially the parts I highlighted here. This along with the money it was costing her to defend herself against the false charges, plus the unprecidented savaging of her family, with media consent, plus the Dems and Obama targeting her so she would get nothing further done as Governor for Alaska or herself are the reasons she resigned.

These are the reasons she honestly and clearly stated. She says what she means.

And she will do more good for Conservatism as a private citizen raising money and drawing crowds for conservatives and becoming a leading voice of opposition against Obama’s Socialism/Marxism. Even if she never runs herself.

Elisa on July 7, 2009 at 10:30 AM

Also,

Excerpt:
Palin is a Christian who, in the past, has made straightforward reference to the will of God. What she believes — what she must believe — is that if it is God’s will that she become president, she will. Therefore, the conventional wisdom of the commetariat and all the advice from political “experts” are just so much noise to her.

(The Other McCain above)

This point cannot be overlooked or stressed enough. This is how she thinks. She has said so over and over. And when she became Governor she asked her pastor for guidance and he quoted from the book of Esther.

Elisa on July 7, 2009 at 10:32 AM

NYT: “a beauty queen who became a real one, gaining the king’s ear to avert the slaughter of the Jews and vanquish their enemies. When Esther is called to serve, God grants her a strength she never knew she had.”

Elisa on July 8, 2009 at 10:16 AM

“watch out boy, she’ll chew you up!” Obama, anyone?

Ya, that “if God wills that I be POTUS, then so be it” is exactly the vibe I got from the interview part that I saw.

One more good quote for all: From the first Die Hard: “We’re both professional…..THIS IS PERSONAL!”

Indies voted for a “black” to show their independence…that will wear off, and easily replaced by a “woman”.
She made the right move, she can move about the lower 49 or 59.
A few stops in California, “we can make you better, it takes a women to come in to clean up after a man”, and she will have the votes.

right2bright on July 8, 2009 at 10:25 AM

Well, I know a couple so called indies who, well I don’t think they voted for him based on race.

They voted for him based on “change” and -I laugh as I think about it- bringing republicans and democrats together. And here’s the kicker we all know that Bush destroyed the constitution, right? (cough bullsh*tcough) well he was going to follow the constitution like Bush never did.
I’m not making up that reason. I heard that.

As I said, MANY people were fooled. It’s going to take a while for them to totally come around, b/c they will have to admit they were played. People don’t like admitting that.

B Man on July 8, 2009 at 10:34 AM

That does nothing to erase her hard negatives among anti-religious, “pro-choice” independent idiots, who decide general elections.

2004 wasn’t a general election?

It’s funny how a party in need of renewal refuses to look at their last major success, ain’t it?–No, it’s not funny, is it?

Palin is just not helping the social-conservative shut-out so essential to “rebranding” the GOP.

Chris_Balsz on July 8, 2009 at 11:14 AM

She winks, and gestures as if she’s running a raffle stand at a PTA carnival and flirting with the local State Farm insurance agent. These Palins and their extended family, are, well, like the Clampetts who descend on Beverly Hills. (cf. “Trig”, “Piper” and “Bristol”-the Alaskan equivalents of “Jethro Bodine”, “Jed”, and “Granny”). And if you are to have scandals in your trailer-park family, let them be elegant ones-cf. Ted Kennedy, Ted, Kennedy, Jr., Michael Kennedy, William Kennedy Smith, David Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Jr. and their assorted sins such as drug convictions, drug overdoses, serial sexual predations, loss of life, etc-At least sin and quote Niebuhr, or discuss alleviation of the sin in Palm Beach or Hyannis Port.

seven in 10 Americans say Palin’s decision had no affect on their opinion of her.

So 7 of 10 Americans either still hate her or like her. 3 in 10 had a change of heart. I wonder which way they broke?

She is going to need more than 34% of indies to win anything.

This should be called the Palin Civil War. A chunk of conservatives suddenly changed their religions to either the Church of She Who Vanquishes the Antlered Demons or the United Voices to Exorcise the Alaskan Imp of Satan.

And the rest of us stand around, facepalming.

MadisonConservative on July 8, 2009 at 12:59 PM

If Alan Keyes quit his job as whatever, the MSM, the DEMs and the GOP establishment would yawn because they do not fear him.

The fact that Palin is getting so much criticism for quitting is interesting because the same critics keep insisting she is unfit for office and cannot capture enough votes to win

In which case what does it matter if Palin quit?

Meanwhile, the public will not take it in until summer ends and kids are back in school

Palin got the Time interview which gives her full opportunity to talk and does not write her off

It brings back one of my favorite jokes about two old ladies eating at a resort dining room. The first complains the food is horrible, and the second adds “yes, and they give you so much”
